    This thesis addresses the interface between Translation Studies (TS) and Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL) (Halliday, 1994; Thompson, 2014) with a view to analyse a corpus of literary texts. We aimed to investigate the transitivity in Oryx and Crake (Atwood, 2003) and in its translation into Brazilian portuguese, Oryx e Crake (Atwood, 2018), performed by Léa Viveiros de Castro, by carrying out quantitative and qualitative analyses of the categories “processes”, “participants” and “circumstances”. We also aimed to verify the “processes” and “participants” most frequently realized by the characters Oryx, Jimmy/Snowman, and Glenn/Crake, and to examine what these realizations indicate about their representation. We composed our study corpus by compiling semi-random textual portions of the source text (ST) and its corresponding portions of the target text (TT). For the manual annotation of the “processes”, “participants” and “circumstances”, we used CROSF-15, proposed by Feitosa (2006), and the labels were quantified in the software WordSmith Tools 4.0 (Scott, 2007). The most frequent “processes” in the corpus are the material, the mental and the relational ones, the most frequent “participants” are “actors”, “sensers”, and “carriers”, and the most frequent “circumstances” are those of location, manner and accompaniment. Oryx realized “sensers” and “carriers”, Jimmy/Snowman realized “actors” and “sensers”, and Glenn/Crake realized “sayers” and “sensers” when it comes to the highest frequency of “participants” related to these characters in the ST and in the TT. It is possible to ascertain that the transitivity shifts of the characters were minimal. Moreover, Oryx seems to bear a more perceptive nature in the ST and a more thinking nature in the TT, Jimmy/Snowman seems to bear a more “actional” descriptive structure in both texts, and Glenn/Crake seems to be a talkative and eloquent character also in the ST and in the TT.Esta dissertação aborda a interface dos Estudos da Tradução (ET) com a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (LSF) (HALLIDAY, 1994; THOMPSON, 2014) para a análise de um corpus de textos literários.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     La Presentación del Discurso es uno de los temas abordados por la Estilística de Corpus y comprende el estudio del Habla, Escritura y Pensamiento en córpora. Este artículo tiene como objetivo investigar cómo ocurre la Presentación del Habla mediante el Verbo Dicendi disse en un corpus de noticias online. El corpus se anotó con etiquetas de las categorías del Habla y se cuantificaron con el AntConc. Los resultados muestran que, de las seis categorías utilizadas, cuatro aparecen en dicho corpus. Se puede concluir que las categorías de Presentación del Habla ocurren con mayor frecuencia mediante proyecciones, porque el Habla Directa y el Habla Indirecta se manifiestan más frecuentemente.A Apresentação do Discurso é um dos temas abordados pela Estilística de Corpus e compreende o estudo da Fala, da Escrita e do Pensamento em corpora. O objetivo deste artigo é pesquisar como se dá a Apresentação da Fala através do Verbo de Elocução disse em um corpus de notícias on-line. O corpus foi anotado com rótulos relativos às categorias de Fala e foram quantificados no programa AntConc. Os resultados mostram que, das seis categorias empregadas, quatro se manifestam no referido corpus. Pode-se concluir que as categorias de Apresentação da Fala são mais recorrentemente realizadas mediante projeções, visto que a Fala Direta e a Fala Indireta se realizam com mais frequência.Discourse Presentation entails one of the topics addressed by Corpus Stylistics, and refers to the study of Speech, Thought, and Writing in corpora. This paper aims to delve into how Speech Presentation through the Presentation Verb disse is manifested in a corpus of online news. The corpus was annotated with labels concerning selected categories of Speech Presentation, and they were quantified on the AntConc software. Results show that four of the six categories occur in the corpus. It can be concluded that the categories of Speech Presentation are more frequently realised through projections, since Direct Speech and Indirect Speech are manifested more frequently

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Adjuntos modais no conto 'Grace', de Joyce, e em duas de suas traduções para o português do Brasil.

    Os adjuntos modais são categorias pertencentes à metafunção interpessoal da linguagem (HALLIDAY, 1994). Em textos literários, podem apontar questões avaliativas por parte do/a narrador/a e das personagens. Este artigo tem por objetivo investigar essas categorias no conto Grace (JOYCE, 2001), em sua reinstanciação interlingual feita por José Roberto O’Shea (JOYCE, 2012) e em sua reinstanciação interlingual produzida por Guilherme da Silva Braga (JOYCE, 2013), ambas para o português do Brasil. Os adjuntos modais dos contos foram anotados mediante o CROSF (FEITOSA, 2006) e quantificados por intermédio do WordSmith Tools (versão 6.0). Os resultados mostram que o texto-fonte apresenta mais adjuntos modais que os textos traduzidos. Também apontam que os adjuntos modais de modo oracional são mais frequentes que os adjuntos modais de comentário nos três contos. Observa-se que os tradutores fazem uso de sua criatividade tradutória ao propor traduções alternativas para os adjuntos modais
