Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Investigação sobre a existência de evaporitos na parte marítima da Sub-bacia de Alagoas
No full textA bacia de Sergipe-Alagoas representa a extremidade norte da grande bacia evaporítica que se desenvolveu durante o Aptiano entre o Brasil e o Continente Africano. O entendimento da camada evaporítica, incluindo sua espessura, estrutura e influência na seção sedimentar superior nesta região é muito importante do ponto de vista estratigráfico bem como do ponto de vista social, pois uma grande subsidência na área continental adjacente está ocorrendo e está relacionada à mineração de sal em subsuperfície. Nesta pesquisa concentramos os estudos na caracterização da camada de sal na plataforma continental parte marítima, águas rasas e profundas, com o objetivo de avaliarmos a possibilidade de existência de evaporitos nessa região. Foi utilizado o processamento sísmico tecVA post-stack nas linhas sísmicas 2D obtidas da ANP visando uma melhor caracterização da camada de sal na plataforma continental e também atributos sísmicos próprios para definição da existência de evaporitos nas feições identificadas na interpretação sísmica. Em águas rasas, além da interpretação sísmica, também foram utilizados os poços disponíveis para análise de suas litologias e validação da interpretação sísmica. Em águas profundas somente foi utilizado a interpretação sísmica por não existirem poços nessa região. Foram utilizados mapas de gravimetria e magnetometria no intuito da contribuição dos métodos potenciais neste trabalho. O mapa de gravimetria colaborou indicando a baixa densidade na área onde se encontram os evaporitos, porém o mapa de magnetometria não trouxe contribuição em função da baixa resolução, prestando somente para analises regionais envolvendo grandes estruturas da crosta. Pelo estudo apresentado a existência de evaporitos na sub-bacia de Maceió ocorre na porção terrestre em três grandes áreas, em Maceió nas proximidades da lagoa Mundaú, ao norte no Baixo da Fazenda Guindaste e ao sul no Baixo de Coruripe, todas as áreas contempladas pelos evaporitos Paripueira da Formação Maceió. Ainda na porção terrestre existe evento único do evaporito Horizonte da Formação Coqueiro Seco que se localiza no Baixo de Varrela, sendo o evaporito mais antigo das bacias de margem Sul-Atlântica. Na porção marítima águas rasas foram encontrados evaporitos somente ao sul, de acordo com a análise litológica dos poços disponíveis. Na porção marítima águas profundas foram encontradas feições que indicam grande probabilidade de existência de evaporitos, essas feições se encontram na crosta continental, porém bem próximas ao limite crustal. Pelo contexto tectono-estratigráfico, esses evaporitos em águas profundas seriam Ibura da Formação Muribeca, mesma idade geológica dos evaporitos da sub-bacia de Aracaju. Convém destacar que a existência de evaporitos na porção marítima em águas rasas e profundas ocorrem a Sul do delineamento da zona de fratura de Ascenção.The Sergipe-Alagoas basin represents the northern end of the large evaporitic basin that developed during the Aptian between Brazil and the African Continent. The understanding of the evaporitic layer, including its thickness, structure and influence on the upper sedimentary section in this region is very important from the stratigraphic view as well as a social point, as a large subsidence in the adjacent continental area is occurring and is related to the subsurface salt mining. In this research we will focus the studies on the characterization of the salt layer on the continental platform, in shallow and deep waters, with the objective of evaluating the possibility of the existence of evaporites in this region. The post-stack tecVA seismic processing was used on 2D seismic lines that were received from ANP aiming for a better characterization of the salt layer on the continental platform and specific seismic attributes to define the existence of evaporites in the features identified in the seismic interpretation was used too. Gravimetry and magnetometry maps were used in order to potential methods could contribute in this work. The gravimetry map collaborated, indicating the low density in the area Where the evaporites are found, but the magnetometry map did not bring a contribution due to the low resolution, being used only for regional analyzes involving large structures of the crust. In shallow waters, in addition to seismic interpretation, available wells were also used to analyze their lithologies and validate the seismic interpretation. In deep waters, only seismic interpretation was used because there are no wells in this region. From the study presented, the existence of evaporites in the sub-basin of Maceió occurs in the land portion in three large areas, in Maceió near the Mundaú lagoon, to the north in the Baixo da Fazenda Guindaste and to the south in the Baixo de Coruripe, all areas contemplated by the Paripueira evaporites from the Maceió Formation. Also in the land portion there is a unique event of the Horizonte evaporite of the Coqueiro Seco Formation which is located in Baixo de Varrela, being the oldest evaporite of the basins of the South-Atlantic margin. In the offshore shallow water portion, evaporites were found only to the south, according to the lithological analysis of the available wells. In the deep water marine portion, features were found that indicate a high probability of the existence of evaporites, these features are found in the continental crust, but very close to the crustal limit. Due to the tectono-stratigraphic context, these evaporites in deep waters would be Ibura from the Muribeca Formation, the same geological age as the evaporites from the Aracaju sub-basin. It should be noted that the existence of evaporites in the marine portion in shallow and deep waters occurs at the southern Ascension fracture zone.61 f
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
