Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textO estudo busca compreender a emergência da infografia em base de dados no jornalismo digital, a partir da investigação da estruturação discursiva dos dados textuais e imagéticos. Para isso, a análise empírica foca os casos do Blog Estadão Dados e La Nación Data Blog. Inicialmente, pretende-se definir, a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica e da análise dos casos específicos, o que pode ser considerado jornalismo de banco de dados, bem como as técnicas de composição e a evolução histórica da área da infografia. A pesquisa se guia, sobretudo, pela metodologia da análise do discurso para investigar a construção de sentido na organização de dados estatísticos no jornalismo digital, focando os casos das páginas do Blog Estadão Dados e La Nación Data Blog. A análise contempla as técnicas de organização dos infográficos na internet que são utilizadas para produção dos conteúdos gerados a partir de dados estatísticos, incluindo aqueles apresentados em tabelas e também os que estão dispostos em ilustrações, como mapas, gráficos e outros recursos imagéticos. Foram estudados como os processos de inovação tecnológica impactaram na produção e transmissão de mensagens na organização infográfica na internet analisando o impacto de recursos visuais e interativos que contribuem para a produção de sentido. A presente pesquisa espera contribuir para a reflexão sobre os efeitos semânticos e os processos argumentativos nos objetos selecionados, questionando a visão de narrativa objetiva e de interpretação única, costumeiramente atribuída a dados numéricos.This research has the intention to understand the emergence of infographics that use databases in digital journalism. We will study the different composition techniques and effects of meaning in the combination between text and image. For this, the empirical analysis will focus on the cases of Estadão Data Blog and La Nación Data Blog . Initially, we intend to define, from literature search and analysis of specific cases, what can be considered data-driven journalism. The historical evolution of kinds of use of infographics in journalism will also be studied. The research uses the methodology of discourse analysis to investigate the construction of meaning in the organization of statistical data in digital journalism, focusing on the cases of Blog do Estadão Dados and La Nación Data Blog. The analysis will include the technical organization of infographics that are used for production of content generated from statistical data, including those organized in tables and also those who are willing to graphics, such as charts and any other pictorial resources. We will study how the processes of technological innovation impacted the production and transmission of messages on the internet, specially focusing organization of infographics, analyzing the impact of visual and interactive features that contribute to the production of meaning. The construction of news narrative in data-driven journalism: a study of Latin American media
No full textO atual ambiente social conta com uma grande abrangência de dados que circulam e convergem nas mais diversas plataformas. Dentro desse cenário, o Jornalismo Guiado por Dados encontrou meios propícios para ampliar sua presença nas redações. O acesso facilitado a bases de dados, legislações que promovem a transparência de informações públicas, a utilização de tecnologias que rastreiam e armazenam preferências de seus usuários: todas essas circunstâncias fizeram com que a busca por eles se tornasse cada vez maior e, consequentemente, surgiu a necessidade de ampliar o conhecimento sobre os modos de organização, interpretação e também de divulgação deles. Com essa prerrogativa, buscamos estudar a construção do acontecimento nas narrativas do jornalismo de dados, observando seus efeitos de sentido e papeis dentro das práticas socioculturais. O problema de pesquisa que norteou este estudo foi: de que modo o jornalismo de dados (re)constrói o acontecimento em suas diversas dimensões? Para respondê-lo, analisamos quatro veículos de comunicação latino-americanos que possuem equipes especializadas nessa área, sendo eles a Folha de S. Paulo e o Nexo (Brasil), além do La Nacion e do Chequeado (Argentina). Ao longo das investigações, observamos como os dados influenciam as caracterizações e projeções dos personagens retratados, a possibilidade de enxergar diversos ângulos de um mesmo acontecimento e como os elementos característicos dessa narrativa são utilizados para mostrar esses prismas e dimensionar a importância de determinados dados dentro de um contexto específico. As análises trazem as relações de (re)construção da memória; de legitimação e credulidade dos enunciados e enunciadores; além das relações de poder-saber normalizadoras e hierarquizantes.Currently, there is a large amount of data on different platforms. During its period of rapid growth, data-based journalism is taking root in newsrooms. The improved access to databases, the regulations that promote access and transparency of public information, the ability to track and store data over time: because of that, nowadays the uses of data in journalism has become frequently and, consequently, there was a need to expand knowledge about their organization, interpretation and dissemination. The primary purpose of this research is to provide an in-depth analysis of different ways to write the social events, creating different sense effects usign big data analytics. The research problem in this study addressed: how does data journalism construct the event in relation to news as far as the topics dimension is concerned? We analyzed four Latin American journalistics websites: Folha de S. Paulo and Nexo from Brazil and La Nacion and Chequeado from Argentina. This study observed how the data influence the characters' particularities and projections, a possibility to read different angles of a news event and and analyzed how the elements of this kind of narrative are used to show different perspectives concepts and scale the importance of data within a specific context. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
