Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Prevalence of functional limitations in portuguese older adults and its association with high-protein foods: an EpiDoC database analysis
no Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ).
idosos portugueses. Estes resultados carecem de replicação noutros estudos em diferentes contextos.ABSTRACT: Introduction: The dramatic increase in life expectancy ranks one of the greatest achievements of the modern
societies. However, many of these later years may be spent with increasing disability and compromised
quality. Reduced protein intake has been associated with loss of muscle mass and strength in older adults.
However, evidence on the association between protein intake and functional limitations among older adults
is limited. We aimed to: 1) determine the prevalence of functional limitations among community-dwelling
Portuguese older adults and 2) establish the association between the consumption of high-protein foods and
functional limitations among Portuguese older adults in these population.
Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 2393 adults( 65 years), of the second wave of follow-up of the EpiDoC
cohort - a population-based study representative of the Portuguese population, was performed. Subjects
completed a structured questionnaire during a telephone interview. Sociodemographic, health data, lifestyle
behaviours, dietary intake, anthropometric data and physical function were collected. Functional limitation
was defined as a score > 0 in the Health Assessment Questionnaire. Binary logistic regression and linear
regression were used to assess the effect of high-protein foods on functional limitations.
Results: Functional limitation prevalence among older adults was 81.0% (n = 2236), increased with age strata
(76.9% for 65 – 75 years to 93.1% for > 85 years), and was highest in female individuals (87.1%) and in the
Azores (85.3%). There was no association between the consumption of high-protein foods (meat, fish and
dairy products) and functional limitation outcomes [e.g. the odds of having functional limitations (HAQ > 0)
was similar for eating meat every day vs. eating meat rarely or never (OR 0.75; 95% CI: 0.32-1.78)]. Despite
this result, we found that age, sex, body mass index, multimorbidity, medication use and perceived health
status were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with functional limitation prevalence [e.g. body mass index (OR
1.08; 95% CI: 1.03-1.12)], as previously reported in scientific literature.
Conclusion: Community-dwelling Portuguese older adults have a high prevalence of functional limitations,
suggesting the urge to address this situation with nutritional interventions that prevent the development of
functional limitations. There was no association between the consumption of high-protein foods and the
prevalence of functional limitations in Portuguese older adults. These findings need to be replicated in other
studies in different settings
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Developing a communication plan for Leonor Silva Jewellery in order to create brand awareness in Portugal
The following research aims to create a communication plan for Leonor Silva Jewellery
to create brand awareness in Portugal. This brand is an author jewellery company inserted in
the luxury market. A research was made by focusing on customers’ behaviour and the main
factors that influence their purchases, followed by an analysis of notoriety and the relationship
between the decisionmaking process and brand awareness when talking about a product with
high customer involvement, as well as the relationship between communication and notoriety;
then it was decided to analyse the concept of cluster and the advantages that the latter can bring,
and Porter's Diamond Model.
The methodology used to answer the investigation question was to elaborate Depth Interviews, and it used the Gioia Methodology in order to analyse qualitative research. We are
able to obtain a classification made of six dimensions: the characterisation of the market,
Luxury brands' promise, position, consumer identity, distributional channels and
communication strategies. Furthermore, in order to analyse each dimension in a more detailed
way, some relevant secondary data was present.
Due to the difficulty of creating notoriety in Portugal to Author Jewellery, an
international benchmark was performed for other European markets. This analysis explains that
the strategies used internationally are similar to those adopted by Portuguese brands. However,
there is more dissemination in these countries regarding a more significant number of
specialised trade fairs and events.
eventos especializados
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
New in vitro models and synthetic biology tools for research and drug discovery against hepatotropic pathogens
Tese de mestrado, Biologia Molecular e Genética, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2019The lack of competent in vitro hepatic cell models has hindered the study of hepatotropic pathogens such as Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and consequently the development of new therapies. The main limitation is the shortage of a primary-like phenotype and functionality as well as limited permissiveness to infection. This work aimed at developing highly competent hepatic cell lines through lentiviral vector mediated immortalization of primary human hepatocytes (PHH). To this end, we started by developing a strategy to sustain lentiviral vector transduction of PHH by improving lentiviral vector design and optimizing transduction conditions. A dualcolor VCN PCR method was also implemented to titrate the immortalizing vectors with increased throughput. The data obtained and the tools established allowed the construction of immortalization libraries capable of driving appropriate expression. The functionality of one of these libraries was confirmed by qPCR and notable changes in morphology of PHH after one week of transduction. More, transduced PHH generated a heterogeneous population and cell clones. A total of 39 colonies was obtained by limiting dilution isolation. Proliferative cells that survived to expansion have demonstrated distinct morphologies confirming the ability of this strategy to generate biologically diverse cells. This high diversity will enable to dissect the determinants leading to the generation of cells permissive to infection and the identification of key factors underlying the hepatic primarylike phenotype. This work contributed to the creation of a platform for PHH immortalization by establishing a high throughput lentiviral vector production and titration methods compatible with use in PHH and by optimizing transduction conditions. A functional immortalization library was also constructed which led to the expansion of a heterogeneous population and 2 proliferating clones. With further optimization this platform will contribute to the establishment of new highly permissive and competent cells to support HCV entry and infection progression that ultimately can assist the efficient drug or vaccine development against HCV
