The impacts from elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations on forest systems have to be evaluated in order to develop adaptation strategies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of high CO2 concentration on eucalypt plantlets growth and on the severity of eucalypt rust (Puccinia psidii), Ceratocystis wilt (Ceratocystis fimbriata) and leaf-spot (Cylindrocladium candelabrum). The experiments for each pathogen were performed in open-top chambers (OTC) and closed chambers (CC). Two clones with different levels of rust resistance were studied in the experiments with rust and Ceratocystis wilt: a Eucalyptus urophylla x E. camaldulensis hybrid and an E. urophylla. For leaf-spot, seedling of E. urophylla were tested. The experiments were repeated twice. The plantlets were cultivated under ambient and high CO2 concentrations (ranging from 520 to 1,147 ppm) for at least 30 days before the inoculation of the pathogens. High CO2 concentrations resulted in a decrease in diseases severity. Plant growth was stimulated by up to 23% in height and 26% in stem diameter in OTCs. Leaf area, dry matter mass and carbon content of the plants was greater at higher CO2 concentrations. In this study, increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 favourably affected eucalypt growth and reduced diseases severity. This effect could potentially compensate for negative impacts from other environmental variables that are affected by climate change and should be considered in the development of adaptation strategies to address climate change. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção.O design representa cada vez mais, uma ferramenta indispensável para as empresas que buscam alcançar maiores chances de sucesso em seus negócios, principalmente quando incorporado no processo de gestão de marcas. Além disso, acredita-se que o design experiencial (experience design) quando inserido ao processo de construção de identidades corporativas, pode contribuir através da construção de marcas coesas e coerentes, e acima de tudo, de marcas que proporcionem experiências agradáveis e memoráveis aos seus consumidores. Com isso, esta tese tem por objetivo apresentar uma proposta metodológica para o desenvolvimento de identidades corporativas experienciais. O termo identidade corporativa experiencial, neste presente trabalho, refere-se a todas as ações da empresa, sejam estas visuais ou não, que podem ser executadas com o auxílio de um planejamento de design, com o intuito de construir e comunicar uma identidade coerente com o posicionamento e os valores da marca através das experiências proporcionadas pela empresa aos seus consumidores. Entre inúmeros outros métodos de projeto já existentes, questiona-se em geral, a falta de uma abordagem mais estratégica no processo de design. Logo, o método de projeto proposto neste trabalho, visa conciliar os aspectos projetuais tão presentes nos demais métodos de projeto, a alguns aspectos estratégicos, sobretudo da estratégia da marca. O processo metodológico consistiu de uma pesquisa teórica que direcionou os parâmetros para a construção do método proposto. Em seguida foi realizado um estudo de caso para avaliar como seria o uso do método na prática, que ocorreu através de análises qualitativas, no primeiro semestre de 2008. Optou-se pela utilização de questionários e observações como técnicas de levantamento de dados. Os participantes do estudo de caso eram alunos do curso de Desenho Industrial - Habilitação em Programação Visual, da Universidade de Brasília - UnB. Após a análise dos dados coletados no estudo de caso, ajustes foram realizados, resultando na proposta final do Método ICEx - Método de Desenvolvimento de Identidades Corporativas Experienciais

Programa de Pós-graduação em Psicologia.A partir da literatura médica e psicológica, constatou-se que comunicar más notícias ao paciente é uma tarefa considerada difícil pelos médicos, principalmente quando este é menor de idade. Deste modo, esta pesquisa objetivou caracterizar o processo de comunicação de más notícias do médico que atende crianças e adolescentes hospitalizados. Mostrou-se importante o estudo desta temática uma vez que a forma como ocorre a comunicação de más notícias influencia no processo de saúde-doença e, especificamente, na auto-estima, na relação entre médico e paciente, no desenvolvimento da criança e do adolescente e, sobretudo, na adesão ao tratamento. Este estudo foi baseado na teoria bioecológica do desenvolvimento humano e se caracterizou como uma pesquisa quali-quantitativa de caráter descritivo, realizada em duas instituições: um hospital pediátrico e uma unidade pediátrica de hospital geral. Na primeira etapa da coleta de dados, a pesquisa teve, com a aplicação de questionário misto, a participação de 33 profissionais, sendo 13 médicos e 20 residentes. Na segunda etapa, realizou-se entrevista semi-estruturada com 18 pediatras, os quais também haviam respondido o questionário inicial, sendo 7 médicos e 11 residentes. A análise dos questionários foi realizada com o auxílio do programa estatístico SPSS, para realização do cálculo de freqüência e porcentagem. A entrevista e a questão aberta do questionário foram analisadas por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo do tipo categorial-temática. Para a análise das entrevistas foram construídos quatro núcleos temáticos (Estratégias, Recursos, Facilidades e dificuldades, e Multidisciplinaridade) e 30 categorias, que refletiram o processo comunicacional percebido pelos participantes. Concluiu-se que a comunicação de más notícias é uma tarefa difícil de ser realizada devido à falta de preparo, sobretudo acadêmico, para lidar com os aspectos subjetivos que envolvem esse processo, como o sofrimento que mobiliza no profissional e as reações do paciente. A comunicação costuma ser evitada ou pouco realizada quanto maior for a magnitude da má notícia. Assim, os médicos não costumam comunicar más notícias consideradas 'piores' à criança e ao adolescente. Contudo, informações percebidas como 'melhores' são fornecidas ao paciente, sendo estas, em geral, mencionadas de maneira sincera, acolhedora, compreensível e gradual. Apesar de ainda imperar o modelo comunicacional que não inclui a criança no seu processo de adoecimento, acredita-se que isso está em processo de mudança

Identification of hereditary cancer in the general population: development and validation of a screening questionnaire for obtaining the family history of cancer

One of the challenges for Latin American countries is to include in their healthcare systems technologies that can be applied to hereditary cancer detection and management. The aim of the study is to create and validate a questionnaire to identify individuals with possible risk for hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes (HCPS), using different strategies in a Cancer Prevention Service in Brazil. The primary screening questionnaire (PSQ) was developed to identify families at-risk for HCPS. The PSQ was validated using discrimination measures, and the reproducibility was estimated through kappa coefficient. Patients with at least one affirmative answer had the pedigree drawn using three alternative interview approaches: in-person, by telephone, or letter. Validation of these approaches was done. Kappa and intraclass correlation coefficients were used to analyze data’s reproducibility considering the presence of clinical criteria for HCPS. The PSQ was applied to a convenience sample of 20,000 women of which 3121 (15.6%) answered at least one affirmative question and 1938 had their pedigrees drawn. The PSQ showed sensitivity and specificity scores of 94.4% and 75%, respectively, and a kappa of 0.64. The strategies for pedigree drawing had reproducibility coefficients of 0.976 and 0.850 for the telephone and letter approaches, respectively. Pedigree analysis allowed us to identify 465 individuals (24.0%) fulfilling at least one clinical criterion for HCPS. The PSQ fulfills its function, allowing the identification of HCPS at-risk families. The use of alternative screening methods may reduce the number of excluded at-risk individuals/families who live in locations where oncogenetic services are not established.Research supported by Barretos Cancer Hospital. Prevalence of BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations in a Brazilian population sample at-risk for hereditary breast cancer and characterization of its genetic ancestry

Background: There are very few data about the mutational profile of families at-risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) from Latin America (LA) and especially from Brazil, the largest and most populated country in LA. Results: Of the 349 probands analyzed, 21.5% were BRCA1/BRCA2 mutated, 65.3% at BRCA1 and 34.7% at BRCA2 gene. The mutation c. 5266dupC (former 5382insC) was the most frequent alteration, representing 36.7% of the BRCA1 mutations and 24.0% of all mutations identified. Together with the BRCA1 c. 3331_ 3334delCAAG mutation, these mutations constitutes about 35% of the identified mutations and more than 50% of the BRCA1 pathogenic mutations. Interestingly, six new mutations were identified. Additionally, 39 out of the 44 pathogenic mutations identified were not previously reported in the Brazilian population. Besides, 36 different variants of unknown significance (VUS) were identified. Regarding ancestry, average ancestry proportions were 70.6% European, 14.5% African, 8.0% Native American and 6.8% East Asian. Materials and methods: This study characterized 349 Brazilian families at-risk for HBOC regarding their germline BRCA1/BRCA2 status and genetic ancestry. Conclusions: This is the largest report of BRCA1/BRCA2 assessment in an at-risk HBOC Brazilian population. We identified 21.5% of patients harboring BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations and characterized the genetic ancestry of a sample group at-risk for hereditary breast cancer showing once again how admixed is the Brazilian population. No association was found between genetic ancestry and mutational status. The knowledge of the mutational profile in a population can contribute to the definition of more cost-effective strategies for the identification of HBOC families.This study was partially supported by FINEP - CT-INFRA (02/2010) and FAPESP (2013/24633-2). Tomam-se aqui o alimento e o ato de comer em uma dimensão estética, levando em consideração o duplo código que se articula nos livros infantis: o texto e a ilustração. O trabalho visa, em uma distribuição rizomática, potencializar a literatura infantil em sala de aula a partir do aparato teórico-metodológico oferecido pelo escritor italiano Gianni Rodari em sua Gramática da Fantasia (1982). Alimento, imaginação, fantasia, estranhamento e relações com o menor articulam-se como conceitos que favorecem a formação de um leitor híbrido ou, nos termos da pesquisa, um leitor menor. Por meio de estratégias interdisciplinares, discute-se a comensalidade e suas mudanças histórico-sociais - da escassez do alimento ao comer em excesso -, e tais estratégias resultam em uma metafórica alimentar que pensa o alimento na literatura e a literatura como alimento. Neste sentido, chega-se a um encontro produtivo entre as narrativas e o leitor, tendo, por um lado, o livro atrativo e/ou nutritivo, e, por outro, um percurso da fome ou do desejo de comer, da devoração cultural, de uma educação alimentar.This thesis was elaborated from the research on the presence of food images in classical tales of oral tradition and in literary (re)readings for children. Here, food and eating are viewed on an aesthetic dimension, taking in consideration the double code articulated on children?s books: text and illustration. The purpose of this paper is to optimize, on a rhizomatic distribution, the use of children?s literature in the classroom, based on the theoretical-methodological apparatus offered by the Italian writer Gianni Rodari in his book The Grammar of Fantasy (1982). Food, imagination, fantasy, estrangement and relationships with the minor are articulated as concepts that promote the development of a hybrid reader or, in the terms of the research, a minor reader. Through interdisciplinary strategies, commensality and its social-historic changes are discussed - from scarcity of food to excessive eating - and such strategies result on a metaphor that analyzes food in literature and literature as food. In this sense, a productive encounter between narratives and reader is reached, having the attractive or nutritious book on the one hand and, on the other hand, a trajectory of food or the desire to eat, of cultural devouring, of nutritional education
