Species abundance distribution models on analysis of relation between bird diversity and environmental and anthropic variables
Modelos de distribuição de abundâncias relativas das espécies (DAE) representam um dos mais gerais padrões em ecologia de comunidades, denominado de curva côncava. Este padrão, mostra que independente do grupo taxonômico ou ambiente, as espécies comuns e mais abundantes são poucas e a maioria das espécies é rara. Estes modelos são úteispara descrever a diversidade em comunidades naturais por que mostram como o número de indivíduos é distribuído entre as espécies e portanto, representam o grau de dominância nas comunidades. Um dos principais objetivos da ecologia de comunidades é entender como fatores ambientais em escalas globais, regionais e locais podem determinar a riqueza e abundância de espécies dentro das comunidades. Apesar do conhecimento acerca destes padrões, a ocorrência de processos em escalas diferentes dificulta a escolha de um ou mais deles como determinantes da diversidade nas comunidades. Assim, nosso objetivo foi avaliar qual a importância relativa do aumento da produtividade, biogeografia, destruição e fragmentação de habitats sobre a determinação da diversidade em comunidades de aves de sub bosque. Para isto, nós utilizamos dados compilados de uma das maiores bases de dados sobre estudos deste grupo para a região sudeste do Brasil e selecionamos 104 localidades amostradas por meio do método de rede de neblina nesta região. Porém, devido às características ambientais e do esforço amostral realizado em cada local serem diferentes, as estimativas de diversidade realizadas a partir destes estudos poderiam ser afetadas, impossibilitando a comparação entre estas comunidades. Assim, no primeiro capítulo desta dissertação, nós avaliamos o efeito da variação do esforço amostral nas estimativas de diversidade realizadas por dois modelos de distribuição de abundância de espécies, o de série logarítmica e o lognormal. O primeiro possui um parâmetro denominado alfa e o segundo outro parâmetro chamado sigma, sendo que ambos medem a dominância em comunidades e são apontados como independentes do esforço amostral empregado. Através de simulações computacionais onde foram geradas comunidades fictícias e amostras destas comunidades, nós avaliamos a frequência de detecção do modelo correto e o viés da estimativa dos parâmetros destes modelos a partir de amostras com intensidades diferentes. Nós encontramos que o modelo de série logarítmica foi detectado com maior eficiência a partir de amostras com intensidades variáveis e que seu parâmetro sofreu menos viés em relação ao modelo lognormal e seu parâmetro. Assim, nós concluímos que o modelo de série logarítmica foi menos sensível à variação do esforço amostral que o lognormal e, portanto, mais útil para a comparação da diversidade entre comunidades. No capítulo seguinte, nós procedemos com a análise da relação dos fatores ambientais e antrópicos sobre a diversidade de aves. Nossas hipóteses foram que a produtividade poderia afetar positivamente a diversidade nas comunidades de aves de sub bosque, assim como o efeito histórico e biogeográfico poderia afetar diferentemente a diversidades em determinadas regiões. Porém, devido à perda e a fragmentação de habitats causada pelo homem sobre a paisagem, estes padrões poderiam ser afetados negativamente, o que poderia acontecer de forma semelhante ou diferente em localidades mais ou menos produtivas, ou situadas em diferentes regiões biogeográficas. Nossos resultados mostraram uma forte relação positiva da produtividade com a diversidade de aves mensurada pelo parâmetro alfa do modelo de série logarítmica, o que significa que a produtividade diminuiu a dominância nestas comunidades da forma esperada. Este efeito, quando adicionado ou interagindo com o efeito negativo das variáveis que mediam perda e fragmentação de habitats, foi considerado tão plausível quanto o efeito isolado da produtividade sobre a diversidade. Porém, a incerteza sobre a existência de efeitos fracos ou ausência de efeito da perda e fragmentação em conjunto com a produtividade nos levaram a concluir em favor de um efeito preponderante da produtividade sobre a diversidade de aves de sub bosque, ao menos na escala analisada em nosso estudo. O efeito biogeográfico, foi menos evidente que o efeito da produtividade, mesmo por que parte de seu efeito é causado pela produtividade. A partir destes resultados, nós concluímos que a influência da produtividade parece ser mais foi determinante sobre o grau de dominância nestas comunidades. Entretanto, o papel tanto da perda quanto da fragmentação de habitats em conjunto com a produtividade pode explicar de forma equivalente a variação da dominância nas comunidades avaliadas por nós, o que aponta para a importância de se considerar ambos fatores e escalas para explicar a diversidade de aves nesta região.Species abundance distribution models represent one of the most general patterns in community ecology and is called as hollow or concave curve. This pattern shows that regardless of taxonomic group or enviroment, the most and common species are few and the most species are rare. These models are useful to describe the diversity in natural communities because they show how the number of individuals is distributed among species and thus, the degree of dominance in the communities. A major goal of community ecology is understand how environmental factors on global, regional and local scales determine the richness and abundance of species within communities. Despite the knowledge about these patterns, the occurrence of processes at different scales difficult the choice of one or more of them as determinants of diversity in communities. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the relative importance of productivity, biogeography, habitat destruction and fragmentation on the determination of diversity in understory bird communities. For this, we used data compiled from one of the largest databases of studies of this group for the southeast region of Brazil and selected 104 sites sampled by the method of mist nets in this region. However, due to habitat characteristics and sampling effort carried out at each site are different, the diversity estimates made from these studies could be affected, making it impossible to compare these communities. Thus, in the first chapter of this thesis, we evaluated the effect of varying sampling effort on diversity estimates made by two models of distribution of species abundance, the logseries and lognormal SAD models. The first has a parameter called alpha and the second sigma parameter, which both measure the dominance in communities and are appointed as independent of the sampling effort employed. Through computer simulations where they were generated fictitious communities and samples of these, we evaluated the frequency of detection of the correct model and the bias of the estimated parameters of these models from samples with different intensities. We find that the logseries model has been detected with greater efficiency from samples with varying intensities and its parameter has less bias toward the lognormal model and its parameter. Thus, we conclude that the logseries model was less sensitive to variation of sampling effort that the lognormal and therefore more useful to compare the diversity between communities. In the next chapter, we proceed with the analysis of the relationship between environmental and anthropogenic factors on the diversity of birds. Our hypotheses were that productivity could positively affect the diversity in understory bird communities, as well as the effect of biogeography could lead to different diversity in certain regions. However, due to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by humans on the landscape, these patterns could be affected negatively, which could happen in a way similar or different in more or less productive locations, or in sites at different biogeographical regions. Our results showed a strong positive relationship of productivity with the diversity of birds measured by the parameter alpha of the logseries model, which means that productivity decreased dominance in these communities. This effect, when added to or interacting with the negative effect of the variables that mediate loss and fragmentation of habitats, was considered as plausible as the isolated effect of productivity on diversity. However, uncertainty about the existence of weak effects or no effect of the loss and fragmentation together with productivity led us to conclude in favor of a predominant effect of productivity on understory birds diversity, at least on the scale considered in our study. The biogeographic effect was less evident that the effect of productivity, even for that part of its effect is caused by productivity. From these results, we conclude that the influence of productivity on the diversity of understory birds seems more preponderant to determine the degree of dominance in these communities. However, the role of both the loss and fragmentation of habitats together with productivity should be considered to explain the dominance variation in communities assessed by us, which points to the importance of considering both factors and scales to explain the diversity of birds in this region
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
