Graphic web–apps for teaching ternary diagrams and liquid–liquid extraction
No full textRecent years have seen a rapid development in e-learning technologies. Specific topics; however, may require additional teaching tools created particularly for their unique characteristics. It is important that these tools are developed with learning outcomes in mind, and if possible are in a format easily accessible. We have developed graphic web applications for the teaching of liquid–liquid equilibria, single- and multi-stage liquid–liquid extraction using ternary phase diagrams. These applications allow students to draw liquid–liquid 2-phase equilibrium curves, calculate phase separation for a given mixture and graphically determine equilibrium stages; the correct results are then produced with hints for the students if they get stuck. Student usage figures and opinions have been collected for the application during trial use on a combined full-time taught and distance learning course in Engineering Separations at The University of Manchester. The current students have found these applications useful for developing their understanding of liquid–liquid equilibria
The campaign for democratic socialism 1960-1964.
No full textPhDIn early 1960 it seemed likely that the official Labour
Party defence policy would be defeated by a unilateralist
resolution at the Scarborough Conference. In response to
this possibility the Campaign for Democratic Socialism,
or CDS, was established.
The CDS projected the image of a grass-roots movement
inspired by Gaitskell's "fight and fight again" speech.
But it was run by a Campaign Committee which included
leading members of the Party like Tony Crosland, Roy
Jenkins and Patrick Gordon Walker, as well as less well
known members like Bill Rodgers, Dick Taverne, Philip
Williams, Brian Walden, Denis Howell and David Marquand.
This highly talented group launched an elaborate and
successful lobbying, publicity and briefing operation
which was influential in overturning the unilateralist
vote at the Blackpool Conference of 1961. After Blackpool
the Campaign helped many of its leading members find
seats in the House of Commons while continuing to put the
"revisionist" case through its newspaper Campaign.
The importance of the CDS in the history of the Labour
Party is, primarily, as the first internal pressure group
organised by the right of the Party. It was also the
first internal Party group to use such sophisticated
lobbying techniques. Moreover, the subsequent careers of
the leading members of the Campaign influenced the
development of the Labour Party. The CDS was an important
formative political action for many of them. Finally many
of the CDS supporters set-up or joined the SDP when it
was launched
Emergence of anthropogenic signals in the ocean carbon cycle
No full textThe attribution of anthropogenically forced trends in the climate system requires an understanding of when and how such signals emerge from natural variability. We applied time-of-emergence diagnostics to a large ensemble of an Earth system model, which provides both a conceptual framework for interpreting the detectability of anthropogenic impacts in the ocean carbon cycle and observational sampling strategies required to achieve detection. We found emergence timescales that ranged from less than a decade to more than a century, a consequence of the time lag between the chemical and radiative impacts of rising atmospheric CO2 on the ocean. Processes sensitive to carbonate chemical changes emerge rapidly, such as the impacts of acidification on the calcium carbonate pump (10 years for the globally integrated signal and 9–18 years for regionally integrated signals) and the invasion flux of anthropogenic CO2 into the ocean (14 years globally and 13–26 years regionally). Processes sensitive to the ocean’s physical state, such as the soft-tissue pump, which depends on nutrients supplied through circulation, emerge decades later (23 years globally and 27–85 years regionally)
Studies of granulosa cell maturation in dominant and subordinate bovine follicles: novel extracellular matrix focimatrix is co-ordinately regulated with cholesterol side-chain cleavage CYP11A1
No full textDuring growth of antral ovarian follicles granulosa cells first become associated with a novel type of extracellular matrix, focimatrix, and at larger sizes follicles become either subordinate or dominant. To examine this, bovine subordinate (9.0+/-S.E.M. 0.4 mm; n=16), partially dominant (12.0+/-0.6 mm; n=18) and fully dominant (15.0+/-0.4 mm; n=14) follicles were examined by real time RT-PCR analyses of granulosa cells and by immunohistochemistry of focimatrix. Changes in the expression of FSH receptor, LH receptor, cholesterol side-chain cleavage (CYP11A1), 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, aromatase (CYP19A1) and inhibin-alpha and beta-B were observed as expected for follicle sizes examined. After adjusting for size differences, only CYP11A1 was significantly different between the groups, and elevated in dominant follicles. Also after adjusting for differences in size there were no significant differences in expression of focimatrix components collagen type IV alpha-1 (COL4A1), laminin beta-2, nidogen 1 (NID1), and perlecan (HSPG2) or the volume density of NID1 and -2 and HSPG2. The volume density of focimatrix components in laminin 111 was significantly elevated in dominant follicles. Adjusting for analysis of more than one follicle per animal and for multiple correlations, CYP11A1 mRNA levels were highly correlated with the focimatrix genes COL4A1, NID1 and -2 and HSPG2. Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers).
No full textThis study tests the relative effectiveness of the standard modern paragraph theories of A. L. Becker, Francis Christensen, and Paul C. Rodgers, Jr., three major theorists contributing more sophisiticated explanations of the form of paragraphs than that of Alexander Bain, whose theory as summarized in the familiar principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis has dominated textbook explanations of paragraphing since the late nineteenth century. In this test the three theories have been applied to fourteen selected professional essays appearing in six of the best-selling composition readers. Of these essays, seven, designated as classical, are written by the most frequently anthologized essayists, and seven, designated as ephemeral, are randomly selected essays with topical appeal. The components of the three theories tested are Becker\u27s tagmemic patterns and four operations for variation, his lexical equivalence classes, lexical transitions, and verb sequences; Christensen\u27s coordinate, subordinate, and mixed sequences and his dictum concerning the topic sentence in the initial position; and Rodgers\u27 concepts of the stadia of discourse and secondary influences on paragraphing. The study presents a summary of the theoretical assumptions of Becker, Christensen, and Rodgers; a summary of the statistical findings of the applications of the three theories; a comparative summary of the conformity and non-conformity of paragraphs reflecting the application of Becker\u27s and Christensen\u27s theories; a justification of the 100% conformity of the paragraphs to Rodgers\u27 theory; and finally some reflections on the applications of the findings to the teaching of college composition. In terms of the overall effectiveness of the three theories in this sample, Becker\u27s theory works 32.8% of the time, Christensen\u27s 30.8%, and Rodgers\u27 100%. The conclusion that can be drawn from the much greater effectiveness of Rodgers\u27 theory is that, with his discourse-centered theory as opposed to Becker\u27s and Christensen\u27s sentence-based theories, Rodgers allows for sequences of discourse not necessarily conterminous with paragraph boundaries and for more flexible concepts of fluctuations in the abstraction levels within sequences. Another conclusion is that Becker\u27s and Christensen\u27s theories, with modifications, could more formally describe the reality of paragraph structure

O contrato social de Thomas Hobbes: alcances e limites

Programa de Pós-Graduação em FilosofiaO problema em questão diz respeito ao contrato que funda e legitima o Estado em Thomas Hobbes. Tendo como escopo questionar a possibilidade e/ou impossibilidade de nulidade do contrato social e assim verificar as implicações disto para o conceito de soberania hobbesiana. A leitura que impera na tradição de estudiosos da obra política de Hobbes, em especial do Leviathan, é a de um Estado no qual a soberania é absoluta e irrevogável. A interpretação do contrato firmado entre e, somente, entre os homens, deixando, portanto, o soberano de fora, ofereceria legitimidade a este para agir de forma absoluta e obrigaria ao súdito a obedecer de forma irrestrita. A hipótese que se busca sustentar remete à possibilidade de rompimento, desobediência e mais centralmente da nulidade contratual a partir do vício e/ou desrespeito de determinadas cláusulas fundamentais do contrato, visto se oporem às condições de validade do contrato social. Se isso puder ser sustentado desse modo, isto é, se Hobbes compartilhar mesmo de uma teoria forte da nulidade contratual e pela razão, como declinado acima, que achamos ser a correta, então, tal formulação implicaria em sua teoria uma reconsideração do conceito de soberania e obediência, haja vista o estabelecimento de certos vínculos fortes que condicionam as possibilidades de exigência, autoridade e poder da soberania. Portanto, concentra-se em encontrar uma explicação e/ou teorização da nulidade do contrato social e da sua consequência para a teoria da soberania e obediência hobbesiana

The Gospel of Thomas and the earliest texts of the synoptic gospels
No full textResearch on the Gospel of Thomas in the last quarter of a
century has made it clear that the origins of this apocryphal gospel
cannot
be
satisfactorily explained from a single point of view. The
author thus suggests that Thomas
be
understood as a growing collection
of sayings which originated in various places and languages, with some
logia being added to the collection after its inception. While this
suggestion is by no means new, there have been few extensive attempts
to study Thomas from such a presupposition.
Due to the need for a control group, only the logia which have
rather close parallels to the Synoptic gospels are investigated. Verbal and textual affinities are noted between these logia and the earliest texts of the Gospels (the Coptic versions, the Diatessaron, the
Old Syriac version, and other early versions and Christian writings).
Various degrees of probable contact between each logion and these
texts are assigned.
The results of this study give some idea as to the place of
origin, the original language, and the approximate date at which certain logia were added to the collection. Those sayings which show a
closer affinity to the Diatessaron, the Old Syriac version, or other
Syrian writings may
be
considered as having been added to the sayings
collection as it circulated in its earliest form, possibly in a Semitic language. Other logia which show no signs of awareness of a
Syrian reading, but which are similar to variants found in the Coptic
versions or other Egyptian texts, may well have originated in Egypt
and been added to the collection at a later stage. These results,
however, must await verification by those who might approach Thomas
from related, but different, perspectives
