Life is too short to be serious all the time: Donald Duck presents unconventional motivations for publishing in academia

In this food for thought article, we introduce the ‘Donald Duck Phenomenon’ to consider ten unconventional reasons for publishing in academia. These include (i) symbolic immortality, (ii) personal satisfaction, (iii) a sense of pride, (iv) serious leisure, (v) cause credibility, (vi) altruism, (vii) collaboration with a friend or family member, (viii) collaboration with a hero, (ix) conflict or revenge, and (x) for amusement. The article was inspired by the lead author’s social media search for a co-author with the surname ‘Duck’. Through LinkedIn, the lead author, Associate Professor William E. Donald, who is based in the UK and specialises in Sustainable Careers and Human Resource Management, found a collaborator, Dr Nicholas Duck, based in Australia and specialises in Organisational Psychology. While the collaboration may appear somewhat ‘quackers’, per one of Donald Duck’s famous phrases, “Life is too short to be serious all the time, so if you can’t laugh at yourself then call me… I’ll laugh at you, for you”. We hope that this article offers some interesting insights, particularly for academics at the start of their scholarly journey, and acts as a way to stimulate conversation around unconventional reasons for publishing in academia

Vykladačská činnost Mikuláše z Lyry v Postille litteralis a její význam v křesťanské exegetické tradici Exegetical Appoaches of Nicholas de Lyra in Postilla litteralis and Ins Role in Christian Tradition Štěpán Lisý The present work studies variability in Nicholas of Lyra's exegesis in his Postilla litteralis and its role in Christian misionary activities among Jews and Muslims. Lyra's postila is significantly influenced by commentary of Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak. In Postilla litteralis there is a minor influence of commentaries of David Kimchi (Radak), Abraham Ibn Ezra and Raymundus Martini as well. Also in the study the author examines the impact of Postilla litteralis on later scholars and existing numerous manuscripts of Lyra's works in Bohemian and Moravian lands

The deep-rootedness of Catholicism in Polish society has always been an important subject for native filmmakers. Throughout history, the church played an active role in Poland's process of regaining independence and cultivating national culture. However, the 21st century marks a period of its identity crisis. Pedophilia and moral scandals, corruption, and excessive involvement in politics cast a shadow on the image of priests, who are direct representatives of the church. This paper analyzes the portrayal of priests in the most important Polish films of the 21st century: In the Name of (2013, dir. Małgorzata Szumowska), Clergy (2018, dir. Wojciech Smarzowski), and Corpus Christi (2019, dir. Jan Komasa). It attempts to answer whether Polish filmmakers still see priests as spiritual guides for communities, or rather as a function that has irretrievably lost its authority and reason for existence. The thesis presents the historical context of the priest's special position in Polish society, starting from the beginnings of statehood, through World War II, communism, and the pontificate of John Paul II. The author also refers to sociological studies showing the decline in trust toward the clergy in the 21st century and presents stereotypes about priests that function in the cultural space. Additionally, this paper analyzes three films in which priests were cast in the roles of main characters, in terms of how they are portrayed through the screenplay, film language, scenography, costumes, and directorial choices.Hluboké zakořenění katolicismu v polské společnosti bylo vždy důležitým tématem pro domácí filmaře. V průběhu dějin hrála církev aktivní roli v procesu znovuzískání nezávislosti Polska a rozvoje národní kultury. Nicméně 21. století znamená období její identity krize. Pedofilie a morální skandály, korupce a přílišné zapojení do politiky vrhají stín na obraz kněží, kteří jsou přímými představiteli církve. Tato práce analyzuje zobrazení kněží v nejvýznamnějších polských filmech 21. století: Ve jménu (2013, rež. Małgorzata Szumowska), Klér (2018, rež. Wojciech Smarzowski) a Corpus Christi (2019, rež. Jan Komasa).

Discrete Models Of Coupled Dynamic Thermoelasticity For Stress-Temperature Formulations

    No full text
In this article, the author studies the properties of discrete approximations for mathematical models of coupled thermoelasticity in the stress-temperature formulation. Since many applied problems deal with steep gradients of thermal fields, the main emphasis is given to the investigation of non-smooth solutions of non-stationary thermoelasticity. Convergence of operator-difference schemes on weak solutions of thermoelasticity is proved, and the dispersion analysis of models is performed. Error estimates and the results of computational experiments are presented. Key words: hyperbolic-parabolic models, operator-difference schemes for thermoelasticity problems, weak solutions, optimal error control. 1 Mixed Modes in Dynamics Described by Mathematical Models of Coupled Field Theory. In essence, any mathematical model describes a transformation of different types of energy. The recognition of this fact leads to an integral reformulation of differential models. On the one hand, such a r..

Application of ALTPACK to the Solution of Nonlinear PDEs

    No full text
In this article the author applies the alternating-triangular method (ATM) to the solution of a number of 2D initial-boundary value problems that can be modelled by non-linear parabolic equations with a source term. Different types of non-linearities are considered and the procedure of finding approximate solutions is explained. The main features of the ALTPACK package are outlined and the results of computational experiments are presented. Key words: non-linear parabolic equations with source terms, alternating-triangular method. 1 Introduction. The application of mathematical models based on linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations is extremely wide [2, 6, 10, 15, 23, 9, 16]. It includes such areas as heat conduction, diffusion, electron and ion thermoconductivity, combustion and porous media modelling, chemical kinetics, semiconductor device modelling, biophysics etc. Such models differ from each other only by types of dependencies of coefficients and source terms. Open access self-archiving: An author study

    No full text
This, our second author international, cross-disciplinary study on open access had 1296 respondents. Its focus was on self-archiving. Almost half (49%) of the respondent population have self-archived at least one article during the last three years. Use of institutional repositories for this purpose has doubled and usage has increased by almost 60% for subject-based repositories. Self-archiving activity is greatest amongst those who publish the largest number of papers. There is still a substantial proportion of authors unaware of the possibility of providing open access to their work by self-archiving. Of the authors who have not yet self-archived any articles, 71% remain unaware of the option. With 49% of the author population having self-archived in some way, this means that 36% of the total author population (71% of the remaining 51%), has not yet been appraised of this way of providing open access. Authors have frequently expressed reluctance to self-archive because of the perceived time required and possible technical difficulties in carrying out this activity, yet findings here show that only 20% of authors found some degree of difficulty with the first act of depositing an article in a repository, and that this dropped to 9% for subsequent deposits. Another author worry is about infringing agreed copyright agreements with publishers, yet only 10% of authors currently know of the SHERPA/RoMEO list of publisher permissions policies with respect to self-archiving, where clear guidance as to what a publisher permits is provided. Where it is not known if permission is required, however, authors are not seeking it and are self-archiving without it. Communicating their results to peers remains the primary reason for scholars publishing their work; in other words, researchers publish to have an impact on their field. The vast majority of authors (81%) would willingly comply with a mandate from their employer or research funder to deposit copies of their articles in an institutional or subject-based repository. A further 13% would comply reluctantly; 5% would not comply with such a mandate
