Carbon-based structures, such as nanotubes, and more recently graphene, have attracted great attention from the scientific community both from a basic science perspective and for potential applications in photonics and electronics. In the particular case of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon structure organized in a hexagonal lattice, we have an extremely resilient material with electron and thermal transport properties that are practically unparalleled. To address the issue of the absence of a bandgap, or to obtain conductive wires, graphene nanoribbons can be obtained by confining graphene in one dimension. These one-dimensional structures retain many of the properties of graphene in a nano-scale wire. Furthermore, nanoribbons can be connected to other materials (also carbon-based) to create new devices. This is the case with open quantum dots that can function as single-electron transistors. The presence of defects in graphene nanoribbons plays an important role in the transport properties and, depending on the concentration, can lead to Anderson localization. The presence of vacancies in graphene nanoribbons can generate both disorder effects and the emergence of localized states. Typically, when studying disordered models, electron-electron interaction is neglected. Here, we seek to understand how electron-electron interaction alters the electronic and transport properties of quantum devices, particularly graphene-based quantum dots and disordered graphene nanoribbons. To do so, we performed calculations using the non-equilibrium Green's function method, describing the interaction states through an Anderson model for magnetic impurities together with the so-called non-crossing approximation (NCA) and a generalization to the Meir-Wingreen formula in the non-proportional coupling regime. Thus, through the combination of these methods, we were able to obtain transport phenomena for interacting systems. We observed the emergence of incoherent transmission and current due to the process of quantum-coherent transport phase-break via the presence of electron-electron interaction in both systems. In addition to a more accurate description, we described phenomena not previously described from a purely microscopic perspective.

We have studied the transport properties of both semiconductor and metalic structures that present a two dimensional confinement. The lateral confinement gives rise to nanowires whose conductance is quantized. In the case of semiconductor heterostructures we have used a model within the envelope function and effective mass aproximations to study the efects that repulsive defects might have on the conductance quantization. Our results show that the presence of a defect in the confined region raises the threshold for the quantized plateaus, while locating it at the end lead diminishes the plateau value itself. We were also able to show that the defect position with respect to the axis of propagation of the electrons is directly related to propagation modes, to the electron density inside the wire and its relation with each of the plateaus. Finally, there is evidence that the defect might function as a probe for the intensity of the wave function inside the structure. The second half of this dissertation is a systematic study of transport properties in atom-size metallic nanowires. We have used a model based on Extended H¨ uckel Theory and the B¨ utikker-Landauer transport formalism to demonstrate a relationship between the atomic arrangement and conductance profiles. The studied structures were obtained from High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) images and the properties of the bulk material. From then on, we have used the calculations to consistently correlate the HRTEM results with transport measurements made by a dedicated experiment. Our calculations are in excelent agreement with the experimental data, showing the importance of taking into account the crystallographic properties of metallic nanostructuresMestradoFísicaMestre em Físic

Excitons play a key role in photovoltaic (PV) applications. Nowadays, thin film PV technology has a 9% of worldwide production. In particular, tellurium has been alloyed with cadmium (Cd-Te) and used in the manufacture of thin film solar cells. However, tellurium technology could be improved if lower dimensional structures are used, for instance, the single layer form known as tellurene. Tellurene can be successfully synthesized on a substrate (e.g graphene), has high carrier mobilities, the lowest thermal conductivity among single-atom layers and a tunable optical band gap which make it a prominent candidate for technology development. In this work, we carry out ab-initio quasi-particlemany body perturbation theory (QPMBPT) calculations to analyze the excitonic effects in light absorption for tellurene. Since telluriumis a heavy element, our analysis has been extended to the presence of spin orbit coupling, which makes a significant change in the band-structure as well as in the imaginary part of the dielectric constant. The anisotropy of tellurene is evident in the absorption spectra, which is similar to black phosphorus, with the strongest excitation along the zigzag direction and exciton binding energies similar to other 2D semiconductors. Furthermore, we compare our results with an effective hydrogen-like model, in which the electron and hole interacts via an anisotropic Keldysh interaction, i.e. an screened Coulomb potential, in order to estimate the exciton binding energy for SOC and non-SOC cases. The results show an excellent agreement between QPMBPT methodology and the hydrogen like model.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

THESIS 8084The problem of electronic transport in systems comprising only a handful of atoms is one of the most exciting branches of nanoscience. The aim of this work is to address the issue of non-equilibrium transport at the nanoscale. At first, we lay down the theoretical framework based on Keldysh\u27s non-equilibrium Green function formalism. We show how this formalism relates to the Landauer-Buttiker formalism for the linear regime and how the current through a nanoscopic system can be related to a rate equation for which a steady state solution can be found. This formalism can be applied with different choices of Hamiltonian. In this work we choose to work with the Hamiltonian obtained from density functional theory which provides an accurate description of the electronic structure of nanoscopic systems. The combination of NEGFs and D FT results in Smeagol, a state-of-the-art tool for calculating materials-specific electronic transport properties of molecular devices as well as interfaces and junctions

The experimental realization of graphene in 2004 opened the gates to the studies of a new generation of materials, these so-called 2 dimensional materials are the final expression of what we could think of a plane material (monolayer) that eventually can be stacked to form a bulk. Graphene, the wonder material, offers a large variety of physical properties, in great part, as the result of the dimensionality of its structure, and for the same reasons, materials like phosphorene(P), silicene(S), hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN), transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDC), etc. are very interesting for theoretical purposes, as for the future technological applications that we can develope from them, such as Spintronics and Storage devices. In this dissertation we theoretically study the electronic properties of the materials presented above (graphene, Phosphorene and MoTe2), and besides that, since the spin-orbit coupling strength increases as the atomic number does, we expect that this paremeter plays a role in the electronic structure, particularly for the TMDC. We start describing generically those three systems using density functional theory including the effect of spin orbit. We address calculations to describe the effects of spin orbit on the isolated materials as well as the heterostructures. Finally we also include the possibility of defects in graphene and their possible influence on the electronic structure of heterostructures.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
