Father Andrew Mullen 1790-1818: a study in early nineteenth century spirituality
This thesis is laid out in three parts: Part I. The life and death of Andrew Mullen. The life is based, to a large extent, on a long letter to his mother, Catherine Mullen, dated 7 January 1810. The letter gives a definite insight into his spirituality based on his membership of the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. There is a hint that he had a premonition of an early death. Part II. The burial of Andrew Mullen and the immediate cult to him This is based on documentary evidence. Part III. Most of this part is a catalogue of testimonies taken from 1993 onwards. Then there is the conclusion on the popular devotion to Andrew Mullen stressing the theological aspect of the subject. In the course of writing the thesis it was decided to separate the documentary evidence from the oral tradition. This was advantageous in developing the thesis, and the documents provided a secure basis for the oral tradition. Two pieces of information were found in March 1997. They are death notices: 2 January 1819, The Leinster Journal and 7 January 1819, The Car low Morning Post. There is a slight discrepancy between the two on the date of his death. Also this discrepancy shows a slight difference from the date of the tombstone
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Effective shear speed in two-dimensional phononic crystals
The quasistatic limit of the antiplane shear-wave speed ('effective speed') c in 2D periodic lattices is studied. Two new closed-form estimates of c are derived by employing two different analytical approaches. The first proceeds from a standard background of the plane wave expansion (PWE). The second is a new approach, which resides in x-space and centers on the monodromy matrix (MM) introduced in the 2D case as the multiplicative integral, taken in one coordinate, of a matrix with components being the operators with respect to the other coordinate. On the numerical side, an efficient PWE-based scheme for computing c is proposed and implemented. The analytical and numerical findings are applied to several examples of 2D square lattices with two and three high contrast components, for which the new PWE and MM estimates are compared with the numerical data and with some known approximations. It is demonstrated that the PWE estimate is most efficient in the case of densely packed stiff inclusions, especially when they form a symmetric lattice, while in general it is the MM estimate that provides the best overall fitting accuracy.Peer reviewe

Assessment of residual stress using thermoelastic stress analysis
The work described in this thesis considers the application of thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) to theassessment of residual stresses in metallic materials. Residual stresses exist within almost all engineeringcomponents and structures. They are an unavoidable consequence of manufacturing processes and maycause the premature and catastrophic failure of a component when coupled with in-service stresses.Alternatively, beneficial residual stress may be introduced to enhance the component performance.Greater knowledge of residual stress and its evolution, will not only provide an opportunity to improvecomponent manufacture and design, but may allow the potential life extension of current structuresbeyond their design life.Techniques for measuring residual stresses can be divided into two main groups. Destructivemethods involve removing material, measuring the mechanical strain relaxation and back calculating theresidual stress. These techniques are generally cheaper and more portable, but are not appropriate inmany circumstances due to modification and damage to the component. Non-destructive techniques donot damage the component, but are typically more expensive, less portable and can require complicatedcalibration procedures to correctly interpret results.TSA is a well established non-contacting experimental stress analysis technique that is quick andportable, and the presence of residual stress is known to modify the thermoelastic response. However,this change is very small and of the order of the noise threshold and resolution of currently availableinfra-red detectors. Several methods for identifying residual stresses from the thermoelastic responsehave been suggested and are further explored in this thesis. Significant attention is given to the effect ofplastic deformation on the thermoelastic constant, and the influence of the mean stress on thethermoelastic response in stainless steel and aluminium.An investigation of the experimental setup is undertaken to optimise the detector settings, maximisethe thermoelastic signal and minimise measurement errors. For metallic materials, a paint coating istypically required which may attenuate the response. A study of coating characteristics is presented,which compares the experimental and theoretical thermoelastic response. The importance of the coatingis highlighted and recommendations for appropriate conditions are provided.The overall feasibility of applying a TSA based approach to residual stress assessment is consideredby examining residual stresses around cold expanded holes in aluminium plate. Changes in the responseare identified and attributed to the presence of residual stress. Laboratory X-ray diffraction is used toprovide residual stress measurements. These are incorporated into a model of the thermoelastic responseproviding good agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions within the region ofinterest. The potential for TSA to identify residual stress is demonstrated, and the study therebyrepresents a significant step towards understanding the role of TSA within the field of residual stress
