Perceived ability and actual recognition accuracy for unfamiliar and famous faces
In forensic person recognition tasks, mistakes in the identification of unfamiliar faces occur frequently. This study explored whether these errors might arise because observers are poor at judging their ability to recognize unfamiliar faces, and also whether they might conflate the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Across two experiments, we found that observers could predict their ability to recognize famous but not unfamiliar faces. Moreover, observers seemed to partially conflate these abilities by adjusting ability judgements for famous faces after a test of unfamiliar face recognition (Experiment 1) and vice versa (Experiment 2). These findings suggest that observers have limited insight into their ability to identify unfamiliar faces. These experiments also show that judgements of recognition abilities are malleable and can generalize across different face categories
“Paper Bullets of the Brain”: Satire, Dueling and the Rise of the Gentleman Author
In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the duel of honor functioned as a formal recourse to attacks on a gentleman's reputation. Concurrently, many notable literary figures such as Samuel Johnson, William Gifford, Thomas Moore, and Lord Byron were involved in literary disputes featuring duels or the threat of physical violence, a pattern indicating a connection between authorship and dueling. This study explicitly examines this connection, particularly as it relates to social acceptance, the gentrification of authorship, and the business of publishing. The act of publishing, putting one's work into the public sphere for consumption as well as critique, created an acute sensitivity to issues of honor because publishing automatically broadcast insults or accusations of dishonorable conduct to the reading public.
This study requires a grounded discussion of complex, interconnected concepts, specifically: masculine identity, social hierarchy, and violence; satire; dueling; and authorship. Discussion moves from a foundational concern with violence and the assertion of social status, to the relationship between status and honor, to specific modes of defending honor, and finally to the attempt to establish authorship as an honorable profession. Although each of these quarrels exhibits physical violence or the threat of physical violence, these examples also exhibit verbal violence through satiric assaults or an exchange of verbal attacks and parries.
As professional writers struggled to overcome the stereotype of the literary hack and gain social respectability, dueling, with either lead or paper bullets, became a way for authors to defend and maintain the fragile social status they had gained.Master of Art
Gothic aesthetics in the story by Anatoly Kozlov “And then I died...”
Pisarz A. Kozlov stosuje szereg ludowych motywów i obrazów. W jego książkach obecny jest osąd filozoficzny. Opowiadanie „I tady ja pamior...”
jest głebokim rozważaniem nad śmiercią, znaczeniem życia, przeznaczeniem człowieka i tajemniczością świata. Autor pokazuje głębiny ludzkiego doświadczenia, jego antropologiczną samotność. Elementy gotyckie obecne w opowiadaniu pomogły pisarzowi zaktualizować jego wizje świata.Gothic literature is interested in the nature of human fear and its effects on the psyche, on the mental and spiritual sphere of individual activities. Belarusian writers have always shown interest to unexplained phenomena, and it has even become stronger in the late twentieth century. The writer A. Kozlov uses plenty of folk motifs and images. Philosophical judgment is present in his books. The story “And then I died ...” is a profound meditation on death, the meaning of life, the destiny of a man and mysterious world beyond. The author has shown the depth of experience of an individual, his anthropological solitude. Gothic elements in the story become an important focus that helped the writer to actualize his vision of the world.Tarasawa Jelena (Тарасова Елена) – doktor nauk filologicznych w zakresie literaturoznawstwa, docent Katedry Języków Obcych, Białoruski Uniwersytet Państwowy Informatyki i Radioelektroniki.Białoruski Uniwersytet Państwowy informatyki i radioelektroniki, MińskAndraûk S.A., Lìtaratura peryâdu 1986–2000 gadou. The study of soil-reinforcement interaction by means of large scale laboratory tests
This thesis presents the results of an investigation into soil-reinforcement interaction by means of direct shear and pull-out tests. Scale and other factors affecting test results were studied; for this purpose an apparatus able to contain a 1 cu.m sample of sand was designed by the author in order to perform large scale tests. Plastic and metal sheet and grid reinforcements were used in conjunction with Leighton Buzzard sand. Direct Shear tests on unreinforced sand samples showed that soil strength parameters were not affected by the test scale, although the post peak behaviour and the shear band thickness at the centre of the sample were significantly affected by the scale of the test. The presence of a reinforcement layer inclined to the central plane of the box had a marked effect on the strength and behaviour of the sample. The reinforcement increased the vertical stress and inhibited the shear strain development in the central region of the sample. The behaviour of the reinforced sample was found to depend on the type and form of the reinforcement as well as its mechanical properties. Pull-out test results can be severely affected by boundary conditions, in particular by the friction on the front wall of the box. The results obtained in the series of tests showed that interference between grid bearing members is the main factor conditioning the pull-out resistance of a grid reinforcement. The intensity of such interference was quantified on the basis of results obtained in tests using single isolated bearing members and grids with different geometric characteristics. An expression for the bond coefficient between soil and grid, taking into account the degree of interference, was suggested. It was also observed that the maximum bearing pressure exhibited by a bearing member depends on the ratio of the member diameter to the mean particle size
