Trainee post: NuTeC (Nuclear Technological Center)
The upcoming new European legislation regarding Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) provides the framework for this thesis. These materials emit a minor amount of nuclear radiation. Natural background radiation is omnipresent but because of health risks the NORM radiation cannot just be ignored. NuTeC is developing a software tool for companies that is capable of performing an automated analysis of gamma spectrum measurements, in order to determine if they comply with the legal requirements.
A gamma spectrum shows the energy of the emitted gamma rays on the X-axis, and the number of counts with that energy level on the Y-axis. The various NORM-nuclides (for example potassium-40, thorium-232, uranium-238) cause one or several peaks on certain locations in the spectrum.
This thesis examines how to efficiently find peaks, identify them and calculate their peak area, using existing and self-developed algorithms. The best way to search for peaks is using wavelets after which their location is compared with a library to determine to which nuclide they belong. Subsequently the peak area has to be calculated in order to ultimately estimate the activity concentration.
All this was implemented in a comprehensive software program (written in C#) to demonstrate these algorithms

Hendy Wahyu Hidayat, The Effect of Marketing Mix on Purchasing Decision of Vos Notebooks in Gramedia Lembuswana. Under the guidance of Mr. Robin Jonathan as the first supervisor and Mrs. Adisthy Shabrina Nurqamarani as the second supervisor. This study aims to determine the effect of Marketing Mix which includes Product, Price, Promotion, Place on purchasing Decision of the Vos Notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana. The basic theory used in this research is Marketing Management. This research was conducted for consumers who buy Vos notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana. The population in this study is all consumers that buy notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana. Samples are 96 respondents from unknown population and sample selection using Incidental Sampling technique. Data collection was collected by distributing questionnaires to consumers that buy Vos notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana. The analytical tool used is multiple linear regression with test instrument, classical assumption test and hypothesis testing. The results of the research on the t test shows that the independent variables; product and price have significant effect on purchasing decision of Vos notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana, while the variables of promotion and place do not have significant effect towards the purchasing decision of Vos notebook’s at Gramedia Lembuswana. The F test show that Product, Price, Promotion, Place have significant effect on purchasing decision simultaneously of Vos notebooks at Gramedia Lembuswana. The management of Gramedia, should increase product quality and as well as the price offered to remain stable, so that the price offered can always be accepted in themarket and could attract consumers to buy the produc
First person - Ivo de Vos
First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Biology Open, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Ivo de Vos is first author on 'The novel zebrafish model pretzel demonstrates a central role for SH3PXD2B in defective collagen remodelling and fibrosis in Frank-Ter Haar syndrome', published in BiO. Ivo conducted the research described in this article while a Research Fellow in Professor Maurice van Steensel's lab at the Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore. He is now a Postgraduate House Officer in Clinical Genetics, currently working in patient care in the Department of Genetics, at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), The Netherlands, investigating pathophysiological mechanisms underlying common skin conditions by studying rare genetic skin disorders, ultimately improving patient care

On the application of network theory in naval engineering: Generating network topologies
Network topology of technical systems (i.e. the way in which components of technical systems are connected to each other through connections like pipes, cables, shafts, etc.) in naval vessels is quickly fixed in current design methods. This means the vulnerability of these systems is also quickly fixed. Variation in network topology may lead to new, unknown topologies that have better survivability characteristics. Therefore a new approach to designing technical systems is explored in this paper. This approach applies mathematical network theory in a naval engineering context. Basic concepts of network theory are explained and then used to make automatic network topology generation possible. Preliminary results using a first version of a network topology generation algorithm are presented and discussed. Future work within the PhD research of which this network topology generation is one aspect is then described.Accepted Author Manuscript.
