ABSTRACT: This dissertation is intended to research historical approaches to the fifties, sixties and seventies in contemporary comedy films. Doing so, I expect to cast some light on recent American events that have proved to be cinematic and likely to be explored in a comic perspective. Viewers´ response to these films is also to be analysed so as to reflect on the cultural values rendered in comedy forms. Moreover, this dissertation includes some thought on the narrative and generic features of comedy as a film genre. The theoretical section also covers some issues raised by film adaptation. The practical research section focuses on the film Forrest Gump, exploring both its historical significance, and the precise nature of this adaptation

Of algorithms, buildings and fighter jets: a conversation with Robin Forrest

A founding member of the Computer-Aided Design Group at the University of Cambridge, UK, and a student and collaborator of CAD pioneer Steven A. Coons at MIT, Robin Forrest occupies an important place in the history of computational design. Along with important contributions to the mathematics of shape representation, his coining of the term ‘computational geometry’ in 1971 offered a handle on design techniques that started to emerge – somewhat uncomfortably at first – in the interstices of engineering, mathematics, and the fledgling field of computer science. Initially fostered by governmentsponsored research into Computer-Aided Design for aircraft and car manufacturing, the methods he helped develop have since been encoded in countless commercial software systems for 3D modelling and simulation, helping structure the intellectual work – and the professional identity – of architects, engineers, and other practitioners of design.</jats:p

The size of the US pharmaceutical market means that the US Food and Drug Administration has a disproportionately large global influence

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for approving and regulating all drugs in the US. Aside from its domestic role, the FDA is also globally important, writes Robin Forrest. Drawing attention to mechanisms of global drug development, market dynamics, and recent trends in drug approvals, he argues that the influence of the FDA outside of the US cannot be overstated

    Inflation Targeting: The British Experience

    No full text
This lecture describes the United Kingdom's experience with inflation targeting. It provides a historical perspective to the introduction of inflation targeting, discusses the concept of inflation targets, and compares an inflation targeting regime with money supply and exchange rate targeting regimes. It is noteworthy that inflation targeting is based on the assumption that low inflation is the proper objective of monetary policy. A significant portion of the lecture covers the issue of the measurement of inflation. It discusses whether asset prices should be taken into account in the inflation measure and looks in particular at the experience of Japan in the late 1980s. It also considers sources of imperfection in traditional measures. It concludes that monetary policy will have to be conducted by reference to estimated price indexes that fall short of the conceptual ideal but does not regard this as seriously undermining an inflation targeting regime. The lecture goes on to discuss the issues of (1) having a target band for inflation or not, (2) the difficulty in forecasting inflation, and (3) the time horizon over which monetary policy should aim. The lecture highlights the important role that openness and transparency play in achieving credibility in monetary policy. It highlights the five devices that are now in use in the United Kingdom, and notes some of the benefits emerging from the open and transparent nature of the United Kingdom approach. It concludes by warning that inflation targeting does not promise to make monetary policy easy but does have the positive virtue of directing attention to many technical issues that need to be resolved in conducting monetary policy.Inflation, Targeting, British

The Unanswered Question of Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump (Robert Zemeckis, 1994) is often interpreted as a film that restages a series of traumatic events survived by the baby-boomer generation. However, perhaps these historical events are not traumas until we define them as such, while their reinterpretations and reactivations are merely paths that allow us to get close to a traumatic core that has always been inaccessible to us. In this article, I explore the function of Jenny Curran (Robin Wright) as a symptom of the character Forrest Gump, and of the baby-boomer spectators. As a symptom, Jenny insists within the subjectivity of Forrest as a piece from the Real, which resists forming any relationship to the Law of the Father. For the baby-boomers, Jenny is a witness who acknowledges with the new generations that the countercultural movement, for which the baby-boomers had fought with their lives, had indeed failed. For gay baby-boomers who are caught between two deaths (the death of Vietnam and AIDS that have been executed but not yet), Jenny is potentially understood as a phantom from death, whose continuous insistence within the life of Forrest offers a force of resistance that could dissolve the Law of the Father once and for all

Us Civil War Menurut Forrest Carter

A novel may reflect the political interests and actions of the author. The author can make a story that is purposed to alter common consciousness. This article uses historicism as an interpretation theory. Historicism is used to avoid careless interpretation. With historicism, the story written in the novel is matched with historical events written in some history books. Forrest Carter writes a lot about US Civil War. He, in purpose, does not write about slavery that is commonly read as the cause of the US Civil War. He writes a lot about the murder of women and children by the northern US army soldiers in southern districts. He also writes a lot about the cooperation of his white character with a Cherokee. Above all written by Forrest Carter, the influence of his life and his political interests are seen
