Visual art made musical: issues of shape, proportion and large-scale form in Escher sketches
This dissertation examines the relationship between the orchestral work, Escher Sketches, and the two graphic prints by M.C. Escher on which its music is based, Regular Division of the Plane I and Regular Division of the Plane VI. Chapter 1 provides background information on the two visual works and, generally, on Escher's work with the "regular division of the plane." Chapter 2 discusses how Escher Sketches, a 12-tone piece, utilizes a regular division of the octave in the construction of the prime row forms behind its two movements. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 explain how Movement I, "Birds and Fish," and Movement II, "Lizards," share structural similarities with Escher's prints at the background, middleground and foreground levels of the music.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 105)

Role of CYP27A1 in progesterone metabolism in vitro and in vivo
In the kidney, progesterone is inactivated to 20alpha-dihydro-progesterone (20alpha-DH-progesterone) to protect the mineralocorticoid receptor from progesterone excess. In an attempt to clone the enzyme with 20alpha-hydroxysteroid activity using expression cloning in CHOP cells and a human kidney expression library, serendipitously cDNA encoding CYP27A1 was isolated. Overexpression of CYP27A1 in CHOP cells decreased progesterone conversion to 20alpha-DH-progesterone in a dose-dependent manner, an effect enhanced by cotransfection with adrenodoxin and adrenodoxin reductase. Incubation of CHOP cells with 27-hydroxycholesterol, a product of CYP27A1, increased the ratio of progesterone/20alpha-DH-progesterone in a concentration-dependent manner, indicating that the effect of CYP27A1 overexpression was mediated by 27-hydroxycholesterol. In order to analyze whether these observations are relevant in vivo, progesterone and 20alpha-DH-progesterone were measured by GC-MS in 24-h urine of CYP27A1 gene knock out (ko) mice and their control wild type (wt) and heterozygote (hz) littermates. In CYP27A1 ko mice, urinary progesterone concentrations were decreased, 20alpha-DH-progesterone increased and the progesterone/20alpha-DH-progesterone ratio decreased threefold (p<0.001). Thus, CYP27A1 modulates progesterone concentrations. The underlying mechanism is inhibition of 20alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase by 27-hydroxycholesterol. Key words: Progesterone, sterol 27-hydroxylase, 27-hydroxycholesterol, 20a-steroid dehydrogenase, 20a-DH-progesterone
Almost isotropy-maximal manifolds of non-negative curvature
We extend the equivariant classification results of Escher and Searle for closed, simply connected, Riemannian n-manifolds with non-negative sectional curvature admitting isometric isotropy-maximal torus actions to the class of such manifolds admitting isometric strictly almost isotropy-maximal torus actions. In particular, we prove that any such manifold is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free, linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three. © 2024 American Mathematical Society.Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in den Naturwissenschaften; National Science Foundation; Simons Foundation; National Security AgencyThe second author was partially supported by the Simons Foundation (#585481, C. Study on Engineering Foreign Language in Shibako Mizuhane by de Rijke and Sakaiko-Shuchiku-kengi by Escher
Shibako Mizuhane and "Sakaiko-Shuchiku-Kengi" are Japanese translations, first one was written by Johannes de Rijke, another was George Arnold Escher, who were employed Holland engineers. These books are preserved in the Mikuni Museum, "Ryu-Sho-Kan". These books consist difficult style concerning words. So they have not been opened to the public. The author already translated them to living, languages. In this study, the author especially investigates in the translation of living words from difficult foreign engineering words.departmental bulletin pape

META-RULES
Meta-rules, or rules for making rules, determine the costs of innovation and thus the pace of economic growth. Adapting rules to a changing economic environment through explicit, well-designed meta- rules makes economic growth quicker, less painful, and more certain than adapting rules through chance-based evolution.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
