Variability of airborne particle metrics in an urban area
No full textIn the present study a mobile monitoring approach (i.e. bike with onboard instruments) was proposed and applied to investigate the spatial variability of all the key airborne particle metrics in an Italian urban area from a statistical point of view. Particle number, alveolar-deposited surface area, and PM<sub>10</sub> concentrations were measured through hand-held monitors and compared to simultaneous background concentrations by means of non-parametric tests and further post-hoc tests (Kruskal-Wallis test). Streets characterized by exposure levels statistically higher than the background levels for all the particle metrics were identified for different seasons in a pilot urban area (Cassino, Italy). A higher number of hot spots was detected for metrics affected by ultrafine particles (i.e. number and alveolar-deposited surface area concentrations) with respect to PM<sub>10</sub>. The effect of metrological requirements of the instrumentation on the proposed method was also discussed
Results of surgical treatment in chronic anal fissure complicated by abscess or fistula in a retrospective cohort of patients
No full textWe report the results of the surgical treatment of anal fissures complicated by abscess or fistula and formulate hypotheses about their nature. Among patients operated between 2012 and 2020 for anal fissure resistant to medical therapy, those affected by septic complications were selected for our inquiry. Surgical treatment consisted in the drainage of the sepsis, fissurectomy, posterior sphincterotomy and anoplasty. Intra-sphincteric fistulas were removed with the fissure, whereas low trans-sphincteric tracks, including horseshoe fistulas, were partially opened and curetted. Patients were followed on post-operative days 7–10 and then until healing. Pre- and post-operative Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Cleveland Clinic Incontinence Score (CCIS) scores were compared. Recurrence rates of disease were recorded. We operated 988 patients and 55 of them showed local sepsis (5.5%) complicating anal fissures. There were 23 abscesses and 32 fistulas. Of these latter, 17 were intra or inter-sphincteric (2 anterior) and 15 low trans-sphincteric (6 horseshoes). Pre-operative VAS score was 7.6 ± 0.9 (mean ± sd), CCIS was 0.1 ± 0.5. Complete healing occurred after a median of 6 weeks (range 3–14 weeks). Mean VAS score dropped to 2.3 ± 0.6 at first follow-up visit and CCIS rose to 0.4 ± 0.2. After a mean of 56.4 months, 41 patients agreed to a visit and 14 were interviewed by phone. At office visit no disease recurrences were observed; pain and continence scores were within normal ranges in all patients. Abscess and fistula in anal fissures are not frequent and may represent a different disease from cryptoglandular fistulas. Surgical treatment achieves higher success than that reported for cryptoglandular fistulas
A ‘twice closed’ patent foramen ovale: a case report of percutaneous management of a residual interatrial shunt in a patient with persistent migraine symptoms
Full text linkBackground Residual interatrial shunt following percutaneous patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure is a rare complication that can be associated with persistent migraine.Case summary A 32-year-old woman with a history of percutaneous PFO closure due to a previous coronary paradoxical embolism and a condition of drug-refractory migraine underwent transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) to investigate further recurrent migraine attacks. A partial displacement of a PFO occluder device was found, and it was successfully treated through the fluoroscopic and TOE-guided positioning of a second occluder in overlap with the previous one. The patient reported no more migraine attacks at the 6-month follow-up visit.Discussion Residual interatrial shunt should be suspected in patients with persistent migraine and a history of percutaneous PFO closure. Fluoroscopic and TOE-guided closure of residual interatrial shunt with a second PFO occlude device seems to be a safe and clinically effective strategy to manage persistent migraine
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
