Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Heat Events in the Indian subcontinent : Detection, Implications for Human Health and CMIP6 Projections
No full textLe temperature globali hanno mostrato una tendenza al riscaldamento durante il secolo scorso, principalmente a causa delle atività umane, e questo riscaldamento è una potenziale causa dell’aumento dell’intensità e della frequenza delle ondate di calore, fra gli altri eventi climatici estremi. La popolazione globale dei paesi alle medie e basse latitudini è più vulnerabile a mortalità e morbilità connesse ad ondate di calore: in India, il numero di morti associati ad eventi di calore estremo sono in continuo aumento.
In India, le ondate di calore influenzano diversi settori, inclusi la salute, l’agricoltura, gli ecosistemi e l’economia nazionale. Nel maggio 2015, una ondata di calore particolarmente intensa dovuta all’inizio ritardato del monsone di sud-ovest ha colpito parte del sud-est dell’India, provocando più di 2500 vittime. L’India è uno dei paesi più popolosi al mondo, ed è previsto che la sua popolazione cresca ulteriormente in futuro; l’esposizione alle sempre più frequenti ondate di calore e l’associata mortalità rappresentano quindi un problema rilevante.
In questo lavoro presentiamo la prima analisi per la individuazione di regioni che sono più esposte alle ondate di calore durante la stagione calda (da marzo a luglio). La nostra analisi combina la reanalisi ERA5 (1980-2019) e le proiezioni di temperatura giornaliera da una serie di modelli del Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6, 1980-2049). L’innovazione portata dalla nostra analisi consiste nel clustering di regioni che mostrano ondate di calore con le stesse caratteristiche. Inoltre, presentiamo uno studio iniziale dei possibili impatti sulla salute in termini di esposizione della popolazione a future ondate di calore e ai loro effetti negativi sulla salute. I modelli dello High Resolution Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP), un sottoinsieme dei modelli CMIP6 ad alta risoluzione orizzontale, sono stati analizzati per proiettare i cambiamenti futuri nell’esposizione alle ondate di calore nei diversi cluster rilevati, attraverso dati di temperatura, il NOAA Heat Index e la densità di popolazione.
Abbiamo identificato 7 clusters che sono stati validati usando due differenti tecniche. Comparando i risultati otenuti con un indice pesato per la popolazione (ovvero il NOAA Heat Index) e la semplice temperatura a due metri, abbiamo osservato che 3 dei 7 clusters mostrano temperature più alte quando pesate per la popolazione. Inoltre, applicando diversi valori di soglia per la temperatura a 2 metri e per il NOAA Heat Index, gli stessi clusters superano i valori di soglia più spesso quando si considera l’indice pesato per la popolazione. I risultati sono simili considerando i modelli HighResMIP con gli stessi 3 clusters: i giorni pesati per la popolazione aumentano di più rispetto a quelli non pesati. L’analisi dell’esposizione pesando per la popolazione è concettualmente interessante poichè permette di stimare più accuratamente le condizioni meteorologiche vissute dalla maggioranza della popolazione. Valutare la variabilità geografica nella vulnerabilità alle ondate di calore può essere d’aiuto nel progettare appropriate e mirate strategie di adattamento alle ondate di calore
Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
