    Theater as a means of communicating research on climate change: The case of “Cambiare il clima”

    Between 2018 and 2023, the Department of Environmental, Land and Infrastructure Engineering (DIATI) at the Polytechnic University of Turin (PoliTo) implemented a project to advance research and education on climate change monitoring, adaptation and mitigation solutions. As part of their communication efforts, DIATI partnered with Faber Teater to create the play Cambiare il clima (in Italian, this means Change the Climate). This involved a collaboration between DIATI researchers, communication officers, and Faber Teater. The documentary theater that resulted was premiered at Biennale Tecnologia in 2020 and performed at various venues in Northern Italy, targeting both the general public and students.     Architecture in Crisis. Experiments with Participation and the challenge of More than Human Worlds

    [English]: The thesis focuses on the issue of participation in architecture, investigating and questioning the logics, assumptions and ways in which it is proposed, researched and practised. More generally, the research reflects on the dominant culture which attributes to architects the role of technical experts, operating through norms and standards, analysing the disciplinary scenario underlying their training and the devices through which it is enacted. This scenario has contributed to the transmission of a generic idea of user, or universal body, as well as of a generic and abstract idea of "common good", identified as a technical issue and objective. These issues are further problematised through the lens of Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Actor Network Theory (ANT) in particular, whose contribution lies, first of all, in suggesting a more-than-human perspective, capable of further complexifying the meaning of participation and the "parts" involved. In recent years, an experimental agenda has developed at the crossroads of architecture and STS, which has stimulated interesting experiments aimed at exploring different versions of architecture and its political dimension, both by a number of architects in their professional practice and in pedagogical spaces. In the latter, some experimental briefs have revolved around particular more-than-human challenges aimed at provoking a crisis in conventional methods and means of design and speculating what architectural practice might turn into if it re-learned its ways from a variety of agents who are usually not taken into account. In particular, these experiences inspired the author, together with Dr. Tomás Sánchez Criado, Senior Researcher at the Chair of Urban Anthropology, Institut für Europäische Ethnologie of the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin, to engage in a joint auto-pedagogical experiment with the aim of exploring what neurodiversity can teach architecture. Neurodiversity challenges the very premises on which participative design is founded, in the way in which it is commonly conceived, revealing, at the same time, different connections with the built environment, such as to require architects to confront non-Euclidean understandings of space. [Italiano]: La tesi si focalizza sulla questione della partecipazione in architettura, indagando e mettendo in questione le logiche, i presupposti e i modi in cui viene proposta, ricercata e praticata. Più in generale, il lavoro di ricerca riflette sulla cultura dominante che attribuisce agli architetti il ruolo di tecnici esperti, operanti mediante norme e standard, analizzando lo scenario disciplinare alla base della loro formazione e i dispositivi che concorrono ad essa. Questo scenario ha contribuito alla trasmissione di un'idea generica di utente, o corpo universale, così come di un'idea generica e astratta di "bene comune", identificato come una questione e un obiettivo di carattere tecnico. Tali questioni vengono ulteriormente problematizzate attraverso le lenti degli Science and Technology Studies (STS), e dell'Actor Network Theory (ANT) in particolare, il cui contributo risiede, prima di tutto, nel suggerire una prospettiva più che umana, in grado di complessificare ulteriormente il significato della partecipazione e le "parti" coinvolte. Negli ultimi anni si è sviluppata un'agenda sperimentale all'intersezione tra architettura ed STS, che ha stimolato interessanti sperimentazioni orientate a esplorare diverse versioni dell'architettura e della sua dimensione politica, sia da parte di una serie di architetti nella loro pratica professionale che in spazi pedagogici. In questi ultimi, alcuni brief sperimentali hanno ruotato intorno a particolari sfide più-che-umane aventi l'obiettivo di provocare una crisi dei metodi e dei mezzi convenzionali del progetto e di speculare su cosa potrebbe diventare la pratica architettonica se riapprendesse i suoi modi da una serie di agenti che di solito non vengono presi in consideratione. In particolare, tali esperienze hanno ispirato l'autrice, insieme al Dr. Tomás Sánchez Criado, Senior Researcher at the Chair of Urban Anthropology, Institut für Europäische Ethnologie della Humboldt-Universität di Berlino, a intraprendere un esperimento auto-pedagogico congiunto con l'obiettivo di esplorare ciò che la neurodiversità può insegnare all'architettura. La neurodiversità, infatti, sfida le premesse stesse su cui si fonda il progetto partecipativo, nel modo in cui è comunemente inteso, rivelando, allo stesso tempo, diverse connessioni con l'ambiente costruito, tali da richiedere agli architetti di confrontarsi con comprensioni non euclidee dello spazio

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
