The essay is part of a volume in which philosophers of law and philosophers of language dialogue. Specifically, Clelia Bartoli's paper addresses Salvatore Di Piazza’s writing whose thematic core concerns the dynamics generated within a triangle whose vertexes consist of three concepts: laughter, freedom of expression and violence.
The philosopher of language's argument uses as a crucial case study: "Satire à la Charlie Hebdo, or the irreverent, caustic and politically incorrect mockery". Di Piazza debuts with a couple of questions: "can one laugh at everything?" and "can one say everything in a discourse related to humor?". In other words, the author asks within which boundaries freedom of expression using the comic register can be moved so that it is not detrimental to the freedom and dignity of others.
Clelia Bartoli shows how the author starts from a liberal conception of freedom of expression, which from the French Revolution onwards is the conception that inspires most of the normative production. But she proposes to approach the issue with a different conception of freedom of expression, one that does not model itself on liberal idea of the “pars condicio”, but on the “authentic dialogue” as it emerges from Gadamer's hermeneutic proposal. This would give rise to alternative normative implications for defining freedom of expression
Laughter in the Middle Ages is censured as an excess of the body and a danger for the soul. It is the symptom of the folly that the Psalms embodied in the image of the laughing Insipiens, who is an Atheist "in corde suo". Laughter is a beastly sound which comes from a body of a man transformed into an alogos animal. Such transformation of the unbeliever into an animal is shown by S. Brant's "Ship of Fools", and is a recurring topos in literature, religious apologetic, and political propaganda. This topos is also the ideological root of intolerance and exclusion
Orange juice vs. vitamin C : effect on hydrogen peroxide-induced DNA damage in mononuclear blood cells
The intake of fruits rich in vitamin C seems to increase the antioxidant defence of the organism. However, it is still not clear whether vitamin C alone is responsible for this effect. The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of the intake of a single portion of blood orange
juice (BOJ, 300 ml, providing 150 mg vitamin C) on mononuclear blood cell (MNBC) DNA damage, compared with a drink supplemented with the same amount of vitamin C (C-drink) or sugars (S-drink). Seven young healthy subjects were randomised in a repeated-measures design in which they received each drink on different occasions, 2 weeks apart. Blood samples were collected at baseline, every hour for 8 h, and at 24 h after the
intake of each drink. Vitamin C was analysed at each time point by HPLC, whereas H2O2-induced MNBC DNA damage was evaluated at 0, 3 and 24 h by means of the comet assay. Plasma vitamin C concentration increased similarly following BOJ or C-drink intake and was not affected by the S-drink. DNA damage significantly decreased 3 h after BOJ intake (about 18 %; P,0·01) and remained constant at 24 h (about 16 %; P,0·01). No
effect of the C-drink and S-drink was observed. In conclusion, the intake of a single portion of BOJ provided an early protection of MNBC against oxidative DNA damage; however, the protective effect of BOJ was not explained by vitamin C alone, thus other phytochemicals could be involved
Artificial intelligence for epigenetics: Towards personalized medicine
Epigenetics is a field of biological sciences focused on the study of reversible, heritable changes in gene function, not due to modifications of the genomic sequence. These changes are the result of a complex cross-talk between several molecular mechanisms that is in turn orchestrated by genetic and environmental factors. The epigenetic profile captures the unique regulatory landscape and the exposure to environmental stimuli of an individual. It thus constitutes a valuable reservoir of information for personalized medicine, which is aimed at customizing health-care interventions based on the unique characteristics of each individual. Nowadays, the complex milieu of epigenomic marks can be studied at the genome-wide level thanks to massive, high-throughput technologies. This new experimental approach is opening up new and interesting knowledge perspectives. However, the analysis of these complex omic data requires to face important analytic issues. Artificial Intelligence, and in particular Machine Learning, are emerging as powerful resources to decipher epigenomic data. In this review, we will first describe the most used ML approaches in epigenomics. We then will recapitulate some of the recent applications of ML to epigenomic analysis. Finally, we will provide some examples of how the ML approach to epigenetic data can be useful for personalized medicine
