Efficacy and Safety of Micropulse Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation Use in Refractory Glaucoma Patients
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Micropulse Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) is a new method for treatment for refractory glaucoma with lesser complications than coventional TSCPC. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of MP-TSCPC (IRIDEX IQ810 Laser systems, CA) for refractory glaucoma treatment. This was a retrospective study using data obtained from the medical records of patients who underwent a MP-TSCPC procedure at Cicendo National Eye Hospital from July 2018 to September 2019. The outcomes measured were success rate (IOP decreased ≥30% from baseline with or without anti glaucoma medication at first month follow up) and post-operative complications. Fifty-seven eyes from 56 patients with a mean age of 57 years old underwent MP-TSCPC with 3 month follow up. The mean pre-operative intraocular pressure (IOP) dropped from 51.8 mmHg to 36.0 mmHg at 1 month follow up and 36.8 mmHg at the final follow up, representing an IOP decrease of 31% (1 month) and 28% (3 month). There was also a decrease of anti glaucoma medication usage from 2.51 to 2.16. The overall success rate at 1 month follow up was 49% and only 5% complication were found in this study. MP-TSCPC is safe and effective for lowering IOP and decreasing the need of anti glaucoma -medications in refractory glaucoma case. Further long-term evaluation and comparison to conventional TSCPC are still necessary
Survival Analysis of Trabeculectomy and Phacotrabeculectomy in Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the global leading cause of irreversible blindness. Primary angle closure glaucoma occurs most frequently in Asian populations, including in Indonesian population. Surgical management of Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma (PACG) includes cataract extraction, trabeculectomy, or combined phacotrabeculectomy. Many patients presented in the advanced stages of the disease with significant cataracts, requiring combined surgery. This study aimed to determine whether trabeculectomy alone was better in reducing intraocular pressure compared to phacotrabeculectomy in primary angle closure glaucoma. This was an analytic retrospective observational study reviewing medical records of PACG patients underwent trabeculectomy or phacotrabeculectomy from January to December 2015, within a 5-year follow-up period of a tertiary eye hospital. The success rates of the two groups were assessed with Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Success criteria were defined as > 20% reduction of IOP or IOP <21 mmHg with or without medication. Results showed 104 and 41 eyes underwent trabeculectomy and phacotrabeculectomy, respectively. The cumulative 5-year survival rate in trabeculectomy group was 58.6%, and 85.4% in phaco trabeculectomy. There was no statistical difference in the success rate between the trabeculectomy and phaco trabeculectomy groups (p=0.102). Postoperative complications observed in the phacotrabeculectomy group were one choroidal detachment, one malignant glaucoma, and one vitreous prolapse. Thus, the cumulative success rate of phacotrabeculectomy was better than trabeculectomy after 5 years of follow up, albeit not statistically significant
Communication and information-seeking behavior of PhD students in physicists and astronomy
As a part of a wider doctoral research, this paper deals with the communication and information-seeking behavior of research (PhD) students in physics and astronomy. Based on a qualitative case study of PhD students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London, this study seeks to derive behavioral patterns in information-seeking activities of PhD students. The study aims to investigate the intradisciplinary differences in information-seeking activities of physicists and astronomers. The findings show the high reliance of PhD students in physics and astronomy on electronic journals and their low use of libraries. The findings reveal differences in the information-seeking patterns of students who conduct theoretical research and those of whom are involved in experimental research. The research highlights the need for the study of small subject communities within academic disciplines instead of studying users in a broad subject area such as physics as one single domain
Corporate venture capital organizations in Germany: a comparison
This paper analyzes the goals, the organizational structures and processes, and the investment criteria that underlie venture strategies in Germany today, using a sample of 20 corporate venture capital organizations (CVCs). The performance of these CVCs is examined and the data are compared with those generated by studies on German independent venture capital organizations (VCs) as well as with European and U.S. CVCs. The study concludes that German CVCs focusing either on financial or on strategic objectives are more successful than those with a mixed approach. Further, CVCs with a strong financial focus seem to be financially - and sometimes also strategically - more successful than CVCs with a strong strategic focus. Finally, based on these findings, theses concerning the CVC's organizational learning are developed.
Automated Post-Trabeculectomy Bleb Assesment by Using Image Processing
Glaucoma is a second leading cause of blindness after cataract. Glaucoma caused by unbalance absorption of aqueus humour so it increase intraocular pressure. As a result, it surpresses nerve cells so that nerve cells can not get enough blood flow as nutrition intake and can lead to permanent blindness. One of the treatment for glaucoma is by surgical procedure, called trabeculectomy. After the surgery a slightly lifted tissue due to passing fluid, called bleb, should appears. Bleb assesment is necessary to examine the successful of trabeculectomy surgery. One of standard assesment is Indiana Bleb Appearance Grading Scale (IBAGS). Ophthalmologist used this standard to grade the bleb images manually so the result is subjective. This work offered a new approach to standardize the system of bleb assessment by computer software. Features related to bleb height, width and vascularity were extracted from the bleb image by using image processing algorithm. The KNN algorithm then used to classify the image according the IBAGS. The proposed method has successfully increased the Cohen’s kappa coefficient from 0.56 to 0.63. Therefore, it potentially reduced the subjectivity of the bleb grading
Interdisciplinary differences in attitudes towards deposit in institutional repositories
The attitudes and behaviours of academics from different disciplines towards depositing their work in institutional repositories are compared. This is achieved through the use of a survey strategy, and by examination of the contents of a twenty-five UK institutional repositories. The survey targets humanities academics, and the data is compared to that from previous surveys focusing on scientific, technical and medical (STM) disciplines.
The number of humanities documents in institutional repositories is currently far lower than that in STM disciplines. Awareness of Open Access amongst humanities academics is also low. However they perceive many advantages to depositing their work in institutional repositories, especially for the reader, not for themselves. Around two-thirds of respondents would deposit work in institutional repositories, despite having several concerns. Those who would not deposit work in this way perceive the same disadvantages: potential for plagiarism, the apprehension of interfering with publishing their work elsewhere, and the fragility of online means of dissemination.
Increased depositing in institutional repositories in the future depends on encouraging authors of the advantages of doing so, not only to others but also to themselves. At this early stage of development understanding the attitudes of academics in different disciplines is crucial
Learning in and of corporate venture capital organizations in Germany: industry structure, companies' strategies, organizational learning capabilities
Based on responses from 20 corporate venture capital organizations (CVCs) in Germany, we examine the goals, degree of autonomy, fund structure, and main investment criteria underlying the venture strategies of CVCs in Germany today as well as how the CVCs have performed strategically and financially. Further we focus on what CVCs did learn based on their experience and which strategic approach to corporate venture capital is most likely to lead to high performance. The main findings are that an organization’s deal experience tends to influence the selection of strategic as opposed to financial goals and affects CVC performance. Individual experience has partly an additional effect on CVC performance. CVCs pursuing an approach that emphasized financial more than strategic goals have more experience at transacting deals and are financially – and sometimes strategically – more successful than CVCs that focus mainly on strategic goals. These results support conclusions drawn by Siegel, Siegel, and MacMillan (1988) and thereby challenge the findings that Gompers and Lerner (1998) reported for the German market in question. We discuss the limitations and contributions of our findings and provide directions for future research.
