Get PDFTCC (graduação em Agronomia) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Ciências Agrárias, 2008O objetivo da pesquisa foi apresentar um levantamento da situação atual dos criatórios comerciais de emas (Rhea americana) na região Sul do Brasil, com enfoque no manejo da criação, características do plantel e aspectos mercadológicos, baseado em visitas e entrevistas a algumas propriedades, e na literatura disponível. Buscou avaliar os métodos de criação de emas recomendados pela literatura comparados a realidade empregada nas fazendas entrevistadas. Durante as visitas e entrevistas foram abordados assuntos como: métodos de manejo, principais dificuldades, comercialização e perspectivas para o futuro. O estágio foi realizado no Laboratório de Zootecnia do Centro de Ciências Agrárias da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina no período de 31 de abril a 15 de junho de 2008. Foi concluído que existe demanda para os produtos e subprodutos de emas, mas a quantidade de produtos oriundos de criatórios comerciais ainda não supre as necessidades do mercado, e a falta de incentivo dos órgãos públicos e de assistência técnica especializada retardam o desenvolvimento da atividade

Get PDFJohn Rhea discusses growing up in McKinney, Texas, and later attending the New Mexico Military Institute, Texas University, and finally the University of Vienna. He recalls joining the Boone and Crockett Club in 1961 and how his membership led to his involvement in the National Rifle Association (NRA), the Wildlife Management Institute, and the Aspen Wildlife Leadership Foundation. Rhea describes his time as the Club’s director of membership, its chairman of the Conservation Committee, a member of the Executive Committee, and twice as president. He talks about his involvement in various club projects such as the bighorn sheep transplant project, wild burro and desert sheep studies, and the Craighead grizzly bear study in Montana. Rhea also elaborates on the Rampart Dam Study and how the Wildlife Management Institute, with support from the Club, were able to prevent further construction of the dam. Cohen worked for the Sierra Club from 1973 to 1980, when she represented the citizens and environmental concerns of Prince George's County. A water quality expert, Mrs. Cohen's records reflect her work leading the opposition to the construction of the Greenbriar sewage treatment plant. Other projects heavily represented in the collection are the Potomac River clean-up and BARC surplus land.
