Cotton-textile-apparel sectors of India:
"Cotton, textiles, and apparel are critical agricultural and industrial sectors in India. This study provides descriptions of these sectors and examines the key developments emerging domestically and internationally that affect the challenges and opportunities the sectors face. More than four million farm households produce cotton in India, and about one-quarter of output is produced by marginal and small farms. Although production has expanded—most recently with the introduction of Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) cotton—domestic prices dropped sharply in the late 1990s, in parallel to world cotton prices. Using partial equilibrium simulations, we estimate that a price movement of the magnitude that occurred has a significant effect on levels of poverty among cotton-producing households. The fiber-to-fabric production chain, from cotton processing through apparel, employs more than 12 million workers in India and provides 16 percent of export earnings. Except for the spinning industry, these sectors are dominated by small, fragmented, and nonintegrated units, which adversely affect their competitiveness. Recent policy reforms have induced some technological improvements. In terms of future prospects for the Indian processing, textile, and apparel industries, our analysis emphasizes three dimensions of reform—the need for further investments in human resource development to improve industry productivity and reduce poverty among workers in these sectors, the emergence of modern domestic retail marketing chains, and the potentially vibrant prospects for the industry that arise from a growing domestic fabric demand and new opportunities in world markets if appropriate policies and investments are undertaken." from authors' abstractCotton, textiles, Apparel, Rural poverty, subsidies, Industry policy, World markets,

An Ethnographic Exploration of Son Preference and Inheritance Practices in Montenegro
Montenegro is one of the 10 countries in the world with the most imbalanced sex ratio at birth, pointing to the existence of son preference in Montenegrin society. While, over the last decade, international and local organizations have raised awareness of this issue, empirical studies about this phenomenon in Montenegro are scarce. The author conducts an ethnographic exploration into women’s experience of son preference in central Montenegro by presenting their personal and intimate perspective. The resulting paper suggests that son preference is shaped by and manifests through the inheritance practice of property being passed on to the male heir. Through her analysis, the author demonstrates how ideas about gender roles, family planning, housing and inheritance strategies swing back and forth between ‘traditional’ and ‘modern,’ ‘backward’ and ‘progressive.’Peer reviewe
‘They say we are all zombies’ : Rethinking the role of audiences in a mediatized international conflict
Funding Information: The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This research was supported by Estonian Research Council grant PUT1624. Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2023.This article contributes to the conceptualization of international conflict mediatization through the lenses of ‘audience logic’ instead of the usual ‘media logic’ perspective. The former is defined here as beliefs about the workings of the media system that are held by audiences and constructions of their own identities as media users. The empirical analysis is about strategies used by Baltic Russian-speakers in making sense of media and news during the Russia-Ukraine conflict during 2013–2019. The authors propose elaborating the conceptualization of the audience and further inquiry into the resources for audience empowerment to alter today’s asymmetrical publics/elites power dynamics.Peer reviewe
The Future of the Employee’s Right to Disconnect in the European Union and Latvia
The right to disconnect refers to a worker's right to be able to disconnect from work and refrain from engaging in work-related electronic communication, like emails and other messages, during non-work hours and holidays. The Latvian Labor Law does not directly determine the right to disconnect from digital devices, however, such rights arise from certain legal norms. Examples of the provisions of the Labor Law relate to the general rules on rest periods and breaks in work. The recent research results of remote work during Covid-19 pandemic conducted by the author show that for 69.3% of respondents working remotely possibility to disconnect from digital devices outside working hours (when the assigned work tasks have been completed) is extremely crucial. If the rights to disconnect are not explicitly regulated, the risk of disbalance between work and private life is at stake. The increase in workload during the emergency caused by COVID-19 was indicated by 42.7% of respondents in Latvia. That shows that another problem of lack of regulation of rights to disconnect could be unpaid overtime. The research shows that 14.7% of respondents were not paid for overtime work when working from home. The practice shows a critical need for sustainable and predictable changes in the legal system to protect employees’ rights and thus ensure stable employment in general in Latvia. It was also recently decided by Employment Committee MEPs that EU countries must ensure that workers are able to exercise the right to disconnect effectively. Some of the member states in the European Union have recently implemented the right into their legal system (Portugal, Spain, France), but each member state takes a different approach. That means that discussion is no longer if there is a need to implement the “right to disconnect” in national legal acts, but how to implement the right efficiently not only at a national level but at the EU level as well. The goal of the research is to provide an in-depth analysis of the legal status of the “right to disconnect” in the legal system of the European Union and Latvia. In order to reach the goal, the author is using various scientific research methods. The paper is based on a quantitative research method and analytical, comparative, case law analysis method to provide valid conclusions on the current role of the “right to disconnect” in Latvia and the European Union. The author also offers recommendations on how to implement the “right to disconnect” efficiently to avoid violation of employees’ rights and ensure a sustainable work environment. In the result, the author has concluded that the biggest impediment of the employee's right to disconnect is the lack of clear legislative preconditions that would encourage businesses to preserve employees' freedom to disconnect, resulting in a more sustainable working environment - both in the office and remotely. Finally, the author concludes that there is a need to adjust regulation in Latvia to meet the needs of widespread use of remote work. The author also concludes that a significant role to protect employees’ right to disconnect is for governmental authorities to explain the right to disconnect to employees and employers.Peer reviewe
Hellenism or the search of the "other"
Publisher Copyright: © 2018 Universidad de Chile. All rights reserved. The central theme of this research is the "other" in Hellenistic culture. After the author philosophically analyzes the several ways of relating to the "other", he deals with nine Greco-Roman historians of the Hellenistic age, pointing in each of them to their inclination towards a vision of culture which is univocal, confusing or of analogous integration as these terms are described in the introduction

Funding Information: The author(s) reported there is no funding associated with the work featured in this article. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The novelty of this research includes public-private partnerships (PPP) in emergency situations, especially during a pandemic, where there are only a few researched topics. The goal of this study is to answer the following research question: What is the role of PPP in achieving quick and effective COVID-19 testing during a new pandemic in a small country? The methods of this paper are based on a case study approach. In the beginning, a related literature review was done (keywords: public-private partnerships in COVID-19, testing of the COVID-19, health systems during the pandemic). The second step contains data collection about COVID19 in Latvia (2020). Finally, an analysis of the case and data was performed with the conclusion in the result. Results: The average number of tests in 2020 was 2355.99 (interval: 4.00–12,091.00) per day and 2141.73 (interval: 7.67–7365.77) per month. The private sector conducted around 95.78% per month to check COVID19 infection. Conclusion: The PPP role of COVID-19 testing during a pandemic in small countries contains extra resources for rapid and previously not established process organization that allows governments and the public sector to pay attention to other important questions. As a result, collaboration can decrease infection prevalence and mortality.Peer reviewe

Funding Information: The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by the National Research Program to lessen the effects of COVID-19 (Latvia): project number VPP-COVID-2020/1-0011. Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2021.Information on family health-related quality of life (FHRQoL) among families of children with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is limited. This qualitative study explores the impact of pediatric COVID-19 on FHRQoL from the parents’ perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with parents (n = 20) whose children had tested positive for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Inductive thematic analysis revealed the following 10 themes that represented parents’ perception of FHRQoL while taking care of a child with COVID-19: pediatric COVID-19 as a disease with many unknowns; emotional saturation; internal family relationships in the context of “a new experience”; routine household activities and daily regimen while family is in lockdown; plenty of free time; a wide social support network; social stigma associated with COVID-19; different options for work; savings and debts; challenges with family housing and transport availability. Our results show that parents experience multiple effects of pediatric COVID-19 with regard to FHRQoL.Peer reviewe

Funding Information: The authors are extremely grateful of the patient for consenting to publish this case report for scientific publication, dissemination, and educational purposes. The support of Riga Stradins University (RSU) is greatly acknowledged. The author(s) received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2022.Orofacial epidermoid cysts are rare entities that present as encapsulated, subepidermal painless masses, usually slow growing and asymptomatic. They are mostly limited to the floor of the mouth, tongue, lips, palate or jaws. Herein, we present an atypical case of epidermoid cyst originating from the left cheek facial epidermis in a 27-year-old male patient. The cyst presented as a swelling that was slowly progressing in size since the past 1 year with no discharge. Complete excision of the mass was done, and the cyst cavity was found to be filled with a cheesy-white, granular, semi-solid proteinaceous exudate which completely occluded the punctum. The patient post-operatively revealed persistent mechanical trauma due to incorrect workplace habits he developed, which led to the formation of the epidermoid cyst. Patient education was done and was advised to use proper workplace instrumentation.Peer reviewe
