    Evaluating operational strategies for the installation of offshore wind turbine substructures

    The construction of offshore wind farms requires solving more and more complex logistical problems due to the increasing sizes of turbines and changing environments. In particular, the installation of substructures requires attention due to their significant impact on capital expenditures and the limited literature and guidelines available. In this paper, we develop a decision support tool consisting of a discrete-event simulation that allows for comparing strategies for the installation of offshore wind turbine substructures in terms of time and costs. We identify several combinations of transportation and installation strategies for monopile and for jacket substructures. The differentiation is based on the deployed vessels and the installation sequence of the components. The strategies are applied to the case of a wind farm in the North Sea. For both substructure types, we find that strategies involving a second installation vessel result in the shortest installation times, and those in which the installation vessel(s) take(s) care of both transportation and installation result in the lowest costs. Additionally, we quantify the performance increases as a result of a reduction of the most prominent bottlenecks and the sensitivity of the project performance to the start date. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to future market and technological developments in the field

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Consumer behaviour in the waiting area

    Objective of the study: To determine consumer behaviour in the pharmacy waiting area. Method: The applied methods for data-collection were direct observations. Three Dutch community pharmacies were selected for the study. The topics in the observation list were based on available services at each waiting area (brochures, books, illuminated new trailer, children's play area, etc.). Per patient each activity was registered, and at each pharmacy the behaviour was studied for 2 weeks. Results: Most patients only waited during the waiting time at the studied pharmacies. Few consumers obtained written information during their wait. Conclusion: The waiting area may have latent possibilities to expand the information function of the pharmacy and combine this with other activities that distract the consumer from the wait. Transdisciplinary research, combining knowledge from pharmacy practice research with consumer research, has been a useful approach to add information on queueing behaviour of consumers

    The risk-averse newsvendor problem with random capacity

    <p>We study the effect of capacity uncertainty on the inventory decisions of a risk-averse newsvendor. We consider two well-known risk criteria, namely Value-at-Risk (VaR) included as a constraint and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). For the risk-neutral newsvendor, we find that the optimal order quantity is not affected by the capacity uncertainty. However, this result does not hold for the risk-averse newsvendor problem. Specifically, we find that capacity uncertainty decreases the order quantity under the CVaR criterion. Under the VaR constraint, capacity uncertainty leads to an order decrease for low confidence levels, but to an order increase for high confidence levels. This implies that the risk criterion should be carefully selected as it has an important effect on inventory decisions. This is shown for the newsvendor problem, but is also likely to hold for other inventory control problems that future research can address. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</p>

    Competition for cores in remanufacturing

    We study competition between an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and an independently operating remanufacturer (IO). Different from the existing literature, the OEM and IO compete not only for selling their products but also for collecting returned products (cores) through their acquisition prices. We consider a two-period model with manufacturing by the OEM in the first period, and manufacturing as well as remanufacturing in the second period. We find the optimal policies for both players by establishing a Nash equilibrium in the second period, and then determine the optimal manufacturing decision for the OEM in the first period. This leads to a number of managerial insights. One interesting result is that the acquisition price of the OEM only depends on its own cost structure, and not on the acquisition price of the IO. Further insights are obtained from a numerical investigation. We find that when the cost benefits of remanufacturing diminishes and the IO has more chance to collect the available cores, the OEM manufactures less in the first period as the market in the second period gets larger to protect its market share. Finally, we consider the case where consumers have lower willingness to pay for the remanufactured products and find that in that case remanufacturing becomes less profitable overall.     Concerning workload control and order release : the pre-shop pool sequencing decision

    Every production planning concept that incorporates controlled order release will initially withhold jobs from the shop floor and create a pre-shop pool. Order release is a key component of the Workload Control concept that aims to maintain work-in-process within limits while ensuring due dates are met. Order release includes two decisions: (i) a sequencing decision that establishes the order in which jobs are considered for release; and, (ii) a selection decision that determines the criteria for choosing jobs for release. While selection has received much research attention, sequencing has been largely neglected. Using simulation, this study uncovers the potential for performance improvement in the sequencing decision and improves our understanding of how order release methods should be designed. Although most prior studies apply time-oriented sequencing rules and load-oriented selection rules, analysis reveals that load balancing considerations should also be incorporated in the sequencing decision. But an exclusive focus on load balancing is shown to increase mean tardiness and, paradoxically, require high workloads. A new sequencing rule is developed that only balances loads when multiple orders become urgent. It avoids high mean tardiness and allows the shop to operate at a low workload level. At the same time, the percentage tardy is reduced by up to 50% compared to a purely time-oriented rule. The findings have implications not only for Workload Control but for any concept that features order release control, such as ConWIP and Drum-Buffer-Rope

    Job shop control : in search of the key to delivery improvements

    The last major performance breakthroughs in job shop control stem from the 1980s and 1990s. We generate a new search direction for designing job shop control policies, providing a key to delivery improvements. Based on a common characteristic shared by the most effective job shop control policies, we posit that control should have a specific focus during high load periods. A probability analysis reveals that substantial periods of high load are common, and even occur under assumptions of stationarity and moderate utilization. Subsequent simulations show nearly all tardy deliveries can be attributed to high load periods; and that the success of the best control policies can be explained by their ability to switch focus specifically during these periods, from reducing the dispersion of lateness to speeding up the average throughput time. Building on this, we demonstrate that for example small capacity adjustments targeted at handling high load periods can improve the percentage tardy and other delivery-related performance measures to a much greater extent than the best existing policies. Sensitivity analysis confirms the robustness of this approach and identifies a performance frontier reflecting the trade-off between capacity resources used and delivery performance realized. We conclude that a paradigm shift in job shop research is required: instead of developing single policies for application under all conditions, new policies are needed that respond differently to temporary high load periods. The new paradigm can be used as a design principle for realizing improvements across a range of planning and control decisions relevant to job shop

    Transshipment of cross-channel returned products

    Companies increasingly employ dual-channeling strategies with online and o_ine channels to reach customers. The combination of high return rates in e-commerce and the possibility for customers to return products ordered online at any offline store may result in unbalanced inventories. Transshipments can be used to deal with these unbalanced inventories. In this paper we study dynamic policies for transshipment of products that are returned cross-channel from online to offline stores. At the end of each period in a finite sales season, cross-channel returned products can be transshipped back to the online store or kept on-hand at the offline store. Optimal transshipment policies are obtained using a Markov decision process. We introduce a well-performing heuristic based on the expected costs during the sales season, with a maximum deviation of 1:59% from the optimal costs in experiments. Furthermore, we show that in all instances our heuristic outperforms static policies in which products are either always or never shipped back to the online store. We observe that dynamic transshipment policies are more effective than static policies in dealing with imbalances in the initial stock. Dynamic transshipment of cross-channel returns seems to open up possibilities for more effective demand fulfillment of dual-channel companies

    Burden or blessing in disguise:Interactions in supply chain complexity

    Purpose While systems theory explicitly considers interactions as part of a system's complexity, supply chain complexity (SCC) is mostly conceptualized and measured as a linear summation of several aspects. The purpose of this paper is to challenge the general understanding by explicitly investigating interactions between and across different types (detail and dynamic) and levels (plant, supply chain, environment) of SCC. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory multiple case study methodology is adopted drawing on in-depth semi-structured interviews with respondents from eight manufacturing plants in the food processing industry. Findings On the one hand, it is found that different types add and increase overall SCC. On the other hand, the study also shows the opposite: interactions between detail and dynamic complexity can reduce the overall SCC experienced. Additionally, the findings highlight the specific food processing characteristics such as the variability of quality and quantity of raw materials that underlie interactions between types and levels of SCC. Originality/value This study adds to theory by empirically showing that interactions across and between types and levels do not automatically increase, but might also reduce SCC. As such, the findings contribute new detail to the concept of SCC: aspects of complexity do not necessarily add up linearly. Additionally, this study is one of the first to demonstrate how specific contextual aspects from the food processing industry relate to SCC
