The Effect of Indonesian Traditional Music on Stress in Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients

    No full text
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels. Changes in blood glucose levels in type II diabetes mellitus patients can be influenced by many factors, one of which is changes in stress level. Patients with diabetes mellitus type II need not only pharmacology treatments but also non-pharmacology treatments and complementary therapy to reduce their stress. Music therapy is one type of complementary therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of saluang, which is a form of Indonesian traditional music, on reducing the stress of type II diabetes mellitus patients. The design of this study was quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest. There were 20 participants, who were all diagnosed as type II diabetes mellitus patients. Data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests. The average stress level of the type II diabetes mellitus patients obtained before receiving saluang music therapy was 22.5 (SD 5.0), and after receiving saluang music therapy the value was 14.5 (SD 2.3); this difference was significant (p < 0.01). Therefore, we can conclude that Indonesian traditional music can be used as therapy to reduce the patient stress level. So, it is recommended that saluang be used as a complementary therapy for type II diabetes mellitus patients. Keywords: Indonesian traditional music, saluang, stress, type II diabetes mellitu

Introduction: The increasing of life expectancy cause the number of elderly population in the world also increases. The quality of life of elderly as important aspect should be aware by health provider. One of the factors that affect the quality of life is cognitive status. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of cognitive status and quality of life of elderly in nursing home. Method: The research was analytic survey with cross sectional study approach. Population was the elderly who stay at nursing home. The numbers of participants were 52 elderly taken by simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics as frequency distribution and chi square test. Results: The results showed 71.2% of elderly with sufficient quality of life, 82.7% of elderly with normal cognitive status and there was relationship of cognitive status of elderly with their quality of life. Discussion: Based on the result of this study can be concluded that the increasing of cognitive status will be followed by improvement of quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, the recommendation to the leadership and employees of nursing home especially health provider to design the activities that are able to encourage the elderly cognitive status in order to enhance the quality of life of the elderly. It can be by providing facilities such as exercise equipments, reading sources such as newspapers and other brain exercises activities. Key words: Quality Of Life, Cognitive status, Elderl

Fabrication of novel electropolymerized conductive polymer of hydrophobic perfluorinated aniline as transducer layer on glassy carbon electrode: application to midazolam as a model drug of benzodiazepines

The objective of this study is to fabricate solid-contact ion selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) that have long term stable potential. Various conducting polymers such as polyaniline and its derivatives have been successfully employed to improve the potential stability in SC-ISEs. Recently, the role of hydrophobicity at the interface between the conducting polymer solid contact and the ion sensing membrane has been investigated and figured out that the hydrophobic interfaces preclude water layer formation that deteriorate the SC-ISEs potential stability and reproducibility. In this work, a hydrophobic polyaniline derivative was fabricated on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization of perfluorinated aniline monomers in acidic solution. The electropolymerized hydrophobic polymer was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fabricated electrode was employed for determination of midazolam—a model drug-in pharmaceutical formulation without prior extraction. The SC-ISEs performance was optimized, and the potential drift was compared to control SC-ISEs, the SC-ISE linear range was 1 × 10–6–1 × 10–2 M, LOD was estimated to be 9.0 × 10–7 M, and potential drift was reduced to 100 μV/h. © 2023, The Author(s)

Solid-contact K+-selective electrode based on three-dimensional molybdenum sulfide nanoflowers as ion-to-electron transducer

    No full text
Three-dimensional (3D) molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) nanoflowers have been synthesized via a novel hydrothermal method and applied as ion-to-electron transducer for solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs). The morphology and elemental composition of the prepared nanomaterials have been characterized. The performance of the developed K+-SC-ISE has been demonstrated by determining K+ in solution with a polymeric membrane containing valinomycin as the ionophore. A Nernstian slope of 55.8 mV/decade with a detection limit of 10(-5.5) M can be obtained. Using the 3D flowerlike MoS2 as solid contact, the fabricated K+-SC-ISE exhibits a smaller impedance and more stable potential response than the coated-wire electrode. In addition, the novel SC-ISE behaves well in the water layer test and shows good resistance to interferences from light, O-2 and CO2. It is believed that the 3D MoS2 nanoflowers can be a good alternative as solid contact in SC-ISEs. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
