This work presents the development of the VR-SCAN, a versatile and robust triangulation scanner for robotics. Through optical perception the robot is able to comply with numerous tasks. Therefore perception has to be versatile. However, one single sensor cannot allow for all requirements. This work follows the strategy to design an inherently versatile sensor for a well-defined scenario: The VR-SCAN is dedicated to autonomous 3D modelling and exploration with a robot arm. Growing autonomy in robotics requires robust perception working reliably in unforeseen and changing environmental conditions. The robot has to perform tasks without compromising itself or the environment. The sensors requirements for autonomous modelling and exploration are analyzed. Two hypotheses regarding versatility and robustness are derived. The resulting requirements affect the design of the VR-SCAN: Versatility is ensured by large measuring depth and variable focusing. Confidence rating of each measurement provides robustness against false measurements. Therefore detection of safe-for-motion areas is possible. High integration density is achieved by the use and development of very small components: The compact sensor system merges a MEMS micro mirror, a fiber coupled laser diode, a micro motor for focus control, a compact triplet lens and a central FPGA. A patented calibration procedure is described and applied. Thus the functionality of the laser scanner is successfully demonstrated. The VR-SCAN combines outstanding features such as large measuring depth, robustness by confidence rating and high accuracy at close range in a small, lightweight package. Hence this robust and versatile sensor for robot perception complies with the stated hypotheses

Accurate, optical 3D measurement techniques are widely used in industry, medicine and science. In some of the applications, a fast response to changes in the measurement scene is required. This is the case, for example, when a machine has to be stopped to avoid collision, or direct feedback to a human being must be provided. If the 3D result of the measurement is available after a sufficiently short time from the start of the measurement, the reaction can be triggered based on this result. Active stereo 3D sensors based on GOBO projection have been established as an accurate optical 3D measurement method. The sensor projects a time-varying, aperiodic fringe pattern onto the measured object, while two calibrated cameras synchronously record an image sequence, each. After the recording, a 3D reconstruction algorithm searches for pixels pairs, which correspond to the same object point within these two image sequences. For each such pair, the algorithm triangulates the 3D coordinate of the associated object point. With this method, special requirements can be accounted for which are difficult to achieve by other accurate 3D measurement principles. These include measurements with special light wavelengths, such as the near-infrared range, thus enabling glarefree, i.e. irritation-free measurement, or the measurement of very fast processes, such as the measurement of airbag inflation. Until now, however, it has not been possible to provide 3D measurement results in such a short time (e.g. 100ms), i.e. with such a short measurement latency, that an immediate reaction to a change in the measurement scene can be made. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation is the reduction of the measurement latency. In this dissertation, the author describes and investigates methods to shorten the measurement latency of GOBO projector-based active stereo sensors to less than 100ms. The improvements focus on two areas: fast reconstruction of the 3D model from the acquired image sequences, and reduction of the acquisition time by shortening the image sequence length. The latter is achieved by means of an optimization of the pattern projection, which results in a significant reduction of unwanted measurement artifacts for short image sequence lengths. Finally, the author shows several applications that benefit from these improvements

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The first part of the thesis describes the development of a measurement system for quantitative imaging fluorescence analysis. The developed systems are a 2D laser scanner used as laboratory system and a 1D laser scanner for inline applications. The limit of detection of the laboratory system is better than 0.05 g/m² for a lubricant oil typically used in automotive press plants. The inline system can analyze the lubricant distribution on sheet metal coils up to 2.2 m in width, with only requiring an installation space of 1.52 m above the sample. The sampling rate of the 1D system is 400 lines per second. The second topic covers the development, application and evaluation of new methods for the characterization and calibration of fluorescence sensors. The results show that the best ways to determine the limit of detection in lab environments are to use a multiphase carbon analyzer as well as to print thin lubricant layers. In addition, the work presents two new methods for the calibration of fluorescence sensors outside of lab environments. In the first method, a calibrated infrared absorption sensor is used for the auto-calibration of the fluorescence sensor. The second method is the transfer of calibration-data between different optical setups by using a solid material fluorescence standard. The third topic covers the theoretical as well as the experimental study of parameters that influence the fluorescence emission of thin layers. Amongst other results, this work analyzes the influence of the properties of the substrate material, the contact angle that describes the shape of lubricant droplets and the tilt of the sample. For example, the results show a quadruple increase of the detected fluorescence signal, when aluminum samples coated with lubricant droplets are titled by 45°. These findings are essential prerequisites for the quantitative interpretation of fluorescence images of thin layers on three-dimensional industrial components. The presented results make a significant contribution towards the improvement of sensors for quality assurance in the metal processing industries
