Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Miljødebatten - Rollespill som metode i naturfag
No full textI denne studien har undervisningsopplegget Miljødebatten blitt utviklet og utprøvd. Miljødebatten skal dekke et spesifikt kompetansemål i naturfag for VG1. Kompetansemålet har mange utfordringer og krever bruk av læringsaktiviteter som vanligvis ikke finnes i naturfaglæreres metodiske repertoar. Med dette utgangspunktet formulerte jeg følgende problemstilling:
Hvordan kan rollespill brukes som arbeidsmetode til å nå kompetansemålet:
«undersøke en global interessekonflikt knyttet til miljøspørsmål og drøfte kvaliteten på argumenter og konklusjoner i debattinnlegg»?
Dette ledet til følgende forskningsspørsmål:
1. Hvordan fungerte undervisningsopplegget?
2. Hvordan argumenterer elever?
3. Kan en tilpasset versjon av Toulmins argumentasjonsmodell være et nyttig verktøy for elevene?
Miljødebatten ble utviklet ved bruk av design-based reseach (DBR). Undervisningsopplegget består av mange aktiviteter, har hovedvekt på argumenterende arbeidsmetoder, og avslutter med en rollespilldebatt. Målgruppen for undervisningsopplegget var yrkesfagelever på Vg1, og ble prøvd ut i to ulike programområder: bygg- og anleggsfag og medier- og kommunikasjon. Gjennom utprøvingene ble det gjort lyd- og video-opptak av elevdiskusjoner.
Hovedfunnene i undersøkelsen viser at undervisningsopplegg som Miljødebatten bidrar til engasjement og motivasjon i miljøspørsmål. Elever som ikke mestrer tradisjonelle arbeidsmetoder så godt, hadde et bedre læringsutbytte om argumentasjon av Miljødebatten, enn etter tradisjonell undervisning. Ved hjelp av argumentasjonsmodeller, som Toulmins argumentasjonsmodell, tilegner elevene seg kunnskap om argumentasjon som gir grunnlag for både å bygge argumenter, og å vurdere kvaliteten i dem.
Kompetansemålet kan nås gjennom Miljødebatten, men likevel uten at elevene har tilegnet seg dypere kunnskap innen naturfaglige begreper og sammenhenger. Dette bør reise en diskusjon om kompetansemålet har livets rett i nåværende form. Skal naturfagundervisninga bidra til at elevene opparbeider seg generelle ferdigheter som samfunnsaktører, eller mener vi det er viktig at undervisninga bidrar til større forståelse for faglige begreper og sammenhenger?In this study, the teaching program Miljødebatten is developed and tested. Miljødebatten is meant to achieve a special competence aim in science for vocational students in upper secondary school. The competence aim has many aspects. It requires teaching activities that are not usually found in teachers methodological repertoire. The main research question is:
How can role-play be used to achieve the competence aim:
«investigate a global conflict of interest related to environmental issues and discuss the quality of arguments and conclusions in debates»?
The study investigates these research questions:
1. How does the teaching program work?
2. How do the students argue?
3. Can a customized model of the Toulmin’s model of argumentation be useful for the students?
Miljødebatten is developed using design-based research (DBR). The teaching program contains a variety of activities. It has an emphasis of argumentative working methods, and a final role-play debate. The teaching program is tested in two different vocational classes: Building- and construction, and Media and communication. The data consist of observation, videos and soundtracks of students discussions recorded through the testing of Miljødebatten, as well as students science tests.
The main findings in this research are that teaching programs as Miljødebatten contributes to commitment and motivation in environmental issues. Students who don’t succeed by using traditional working methods, have a better learning outcome about argumentation of Miljødebatten, than by traditional classroom lectures. Using models of argumentation, as the model of Toulmin, the students acquire knowledge about argumentation. This provides a basis to both build arguments and to evaluate the quality in them.
The competence aim can be achieved through the use of Miljødebatten, although the study do not document a deeper knowledge in science among the participating students. This raises issues of the appropriateness of the competence aim. Should science education contribute to the students’ general skills as a member of society, or should science education give the students a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and contexts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
