Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Einführung und Evaluation eines neuen digitalen Curriculums Psychiatrie
Get PDFEine Weiterentwicklung der klassischen Lernumgebung mit traditionellen Vorlesungen im Hörsaal ist aus lerntheoretischer Sicht sinnvoll, da erfolgreiches Lernen ausschlaggebend von der Informationsverarbeitung abhängt und weniger von der Vermittlung der Informationen.
Diese nötige Umstrukturierung der Lehre mit den aktuellen digitalen Möglichkeiten zu kombinieren, erschien im Hinblick auf die derzeitige pandemische Situation durch SARS-CoV- 2 naheliegend. Daher wurde im Fach Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie an der JGU Mainz zum Sommersemester 2020 ein neues Curriculum etabliert, welches Im Sinne der Inverted-Classroom-Methode konzipiert wurde. Dies beinhaltet eine an den Präsenzunterricht vorangestellte Selbstlernphase zur Aneignung des theoretischen Faktenwissens mithilfe von online bereitgestellten Lernmodulen. Die 16 Einheiten des E-Learnings umfassten Vortragsvideos, den Auszug aus einem entsprechenden
Lehrbuchkapitel, Fallbeispiele mit Patient:innen und die Möglichkeiten der selbstständigen Überprüfung von theoretischem Wissen in Form von Quizzen und praktischen Inhalten in Form eines psychopathologischen Befundes. Im Anschluss an das Selbststudium erfolgte die Präsenzphase durch das Praktikum, welches für tiefergehende Verständnisfragen und Transferleistungen genutzt werden konnte. Zudem
gab es über das gesamte Semester sowohl eine Feedbackoption für die Studierenden als auch die Möglichkeit, sich bei inhaltlichen, technischen oder organisatorischen Herausforderungen an die Lehrbeauftragte zu wenden. Nach Implementation des neuen Curriculums wurde der Einfluss dessen auf die theoretischen (Feststellung anhand einer MC-Klausur zu Semesterende) und praktischen Lernerfolge (Feststellung mittels Abgabe eines psychopathologischen Befunds) der Studierenden überprüft. Zudem wurden die Evaluationen der Studierenden gegenübergestellt. Als Vergleichsgruppe diente dabei jeweils eine nicht-digitale Kohorte vor Umstrukturierung des Curriculums. Eine qualitative Auswertung von Fokusgruppen das erneuerte Curriculum betreffend wurde sowohl aus Sicht der Studierenden als auch aus der Perspektive der Dozierenden ausgewertet. Die Studierenden mit dem digitalen Curriculum erreichten mit kleinem Effekt in der Klausur signifikant höhere Punktzahlen als ihre Vergleichsgruppe (Mdigital = 26,07 Punkte bzw. 86,9% der Höchstpunktzahl, Mnicht-digital= 25,44 Punkte bzw. 84,8% der Höchstpunktzahl). Ein verbessertes Abschneiden im praktischen Bereich konnte nicht festgestellt werden. Die gesichtete Literatur zum Thema kommt zum Ergebnis, dass es bereits als Erfolg gewertet werden kann, wenn sich die theoretische Leistung der Studierenden nicht verschlechtert. In vergleichbaren Arbeiten nahm die praktische Leistungsfähigkeit der Studierenden zu. Als Hypothese für diese abweichenden Ergebnisse, gehen wir davon aus, dass die bereits 2019 eingeführte Checkliste zur strukturierten Erarbeitung eines psychopathologischen Befundes den Spielraum für Verbesserungen der Studierenden im praktischen Teil einschränkte. Das verbesserte Abschneiden im theoretischen Wissen in Mainz werten wir als erfolgreiche Etablierung des Unterrichtskonzepts: das diverse Videomaterial und die Betonung auf praxisnahe Inhalte mit besonders den eingebauten Rückkopplungsschleifen zur Selbstüberprüfung der Studierenden, welche in diesem Maße in vergleichbaren Arbeiten nicht zum Einsatz kamen, konnte eine Verbesserung im Faktenwissen der Studierenden erzielen. Die Gesamtevaluation der Studierenden zieht zudem ein positives Resümee (Gesamtnotedigital= 1,09 vs. Gesamtnotenicht-digital = 1,66, p<.001; d=0,79, entsprechend einem großen Effekt
(Cohen, 1988)). Dieses Ergebnis deckt sich zudem mit den Inhalten der Fokusgruppen. Weitere Anmerkungen konnten prozessbegleitend bzw. für zukünftige Veranstaltungen nutzbar gemacht werden. Die Wichtigkeit des praktischen Anteils der Lehre wird dennoch im Abbau von Berührungsängsten mit psychiatrischen Krankheitsbildern unterstrichen. Eine digitale Erweiterung der Lehrmethoden sollte daher stets ergänzend verstanden werden und nicht den Patient:innenkontakt ersetzen. Eine weitere Verbesserungsoption in der Lehre wäre demnach in einer zusätzlichen praktischen Prüfung, beispielsweise in Form einer stationsbasierten OSCE, denkbar. Erlangte Erkenntnisse wie jene aus der vorliegenden Arbeit fließen demnach gewinnbringend in die zukünftige Lehrplanung ein und ermöglichen damit eine stetige nötige Weiterentwicklung und Anpassung der Lehrpläne. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
