    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

No entanto, as concentrações excessivas de sais, metais e compostos orgânicos tóxicos são problemas críticos relacionados à qualidade da água residuária usada na irrigação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os impactos ambientais da água residuária tratada (ART) na bacia do rio Vieira e gerar dados relevantes, necessários para a gestão eficaz desse efluente na irrigação do milheto. O rio Vieira é o receptor final da ART da cidade de Montes Claros. O trabalho foi realizado em duas etapas, sendo que a primeira avaliou o estado de contaminação e poluição por As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb e Zn da água e dos sedimentos ao longo do rio Vieira, além de áreas agrícolas irrigadas com a água desse rio a montante e a jusante da cidade de Montes Claros, MG. Na segunda etapa, foram avaliados os efeitos do uso de ART na irrigação de plantas de milheto em solo argiloso e franco arenoso. Esse ensaio foi realizado em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, sendo cinco níveis de diluição da ART aplicada via irrigação (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100%), com dois tipos de solo (argiloso e franco arenoso). As concentrações de Cu e Ni detectadas na água do rio Vieira foram superiores aos limites de referência de toxicidade e restringem o seu uso para irrigação em alguns trechos do rio. A descarga de água residuária no rio Vieira aumentou a teor de metais nos sedimentos do rio, principalmente nas regiões mais próximas à Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto (ETE) da cidade de Montes Claros. O fator de contaminação, índice de carga de poluição, índice de geoacumulação, e o coeficiente e índice de risco ecológico indicaram contaminação e poluição do rio Vieira e de área irrigada com água desse rio por metais a jusante da cidade de Montes Claros. O As foi o único metal que apresentou fator de transferência (TF) maior que os valores generalizados encontrados na literatura. O uso da ART proveniente da ETE de Montes Claros aumentou a produção de massa seca e a absorção de nutrientes nas plantas de milheto, devido ao aumento da disponibilidade de nutrientes, capacidade de troca catiônica e saturação por base nos solos argiloso e franco arenoso. No entanto, o aumento da concentração de ART na água de irrigação contribuiu para o aumento da salinização e sodificação e do acúmulo de As e Zn no solo independentemente da classe textural. Portanto, o uso de ART na irrigação de milheto é uma alternativa para reduzir o descarte de efluentes no rio Vieira, porém recomenda-se o uso das concentrações 75 e 100% de ART na irrigação de solo argiloso e solo franco arenoso, respectivamentAbstract: The wastewater use in agriculture is a widespread practice in the world, mainly because it reduces the demand for freshwater in irrigation, prevents contamination of surface water, and provides essential nutrients to plants. However, excessive concentrations of salts, metals, and toxic organic compounds are critical problems related to the quality of wastewater used in irrigation. The objective of this work was to evaluate the environmental impacts of treated wastewater (TWW) in the Vieira River basin and to generate relevant data, necessary for the effective management of this effluent in the millet irrigation. The Vieira River is the final receiver of TWW of the Montes Claros city. The work was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the state of contamination and pollution by As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn from water and sediments along the Vieira River and agricultural areas irrigated with the water of this river upstream and downstream of the city of Montes Claros, MG were evaluated. In the second stage, the effects of using TWW on the millet irrigation in clay soil and sandy loam soil were evaluated. This test was carried out in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, with five dilution levels of TWW applied via irrigation (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%), with two types of soil (clay and sandy loam). The concentrations of Cu and Ni in the Vieira River water were higher than the toxicity reference limits and restricted the use of this water for irrigation in some sites of the river. The discharge of wastewater in the Vieira River increased the metal content in the river sediments, mainly in the regions closest to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) of the city of Montes Claros. The contamination factor, pollution load index, geo-accumulation index, and the coefficient and factor of ecological risk indicated contamination and pollution of the Vieira River and of area irrigated with water from this river by metals downstream from the city of Montes Claros. The As was the only metal that presented a transfer factor (TF) higher than the widespread values found in the literature. The use of TWW from the Montes Claros WTP increased the production of dry matter and the absorption of nutrients in millet plants, due to increased availability of nutrients, cation exchange capacity and saturation based on clay soil and sandy loam soil. However, increasing the TWW concentration in irrigation water also increased salinization and sodification and the accumulation of As and Zn in soils, regardless of textural class. Therefore, the TWW use for millet irrigation is an alternative to reduce the discharge of effluents in the Vieira River; however, it is recommended to use 75 and 100% concentrations of ART in the irrigation of clay soil and sandy loam soil, respectivelyDoutoradoÁgua e SoloDoutor em Engenharia Agrícola140147/2017-9CNP

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
