Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Identidade, Significado e Imagem do Desvio: uma (re)leitura do fenômeno das Torcidas Organizadas a partir da Criminologia Cultural

Direito.Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar o fenômeno das torcidas organizadas no contexto social brasileiro, assim como o envolvimento de tais grupos em episódios de violência e a resposta social, das autoridades públicas de do corpo midiático a tais eventos na construção de uma política de segurança pública. Para tanto, será utilizada uma abordagem a partir do paradigma da criminologia cultural. Esta se notabiliza pela presença de relevante dimensão cultural na observação do crime e seu controle. Desenvolve-se no contexto da modernidade recente, marcada pela fragmentação social e um contínuo processo de exclusão, os quais originam um profundo sentimento de insegurança ontológica. O crime é observado em sua fenomenologia, com a compreensão das sensações e emoções que fazem a experiência criminosa tão atrativa a seus praticantes. Do mesmo modo, a criminologia cultural trabalha a categoria do edgework, como meio de transcendência, e verifica a presença de uma situação paradigmática de tédio na estrutura das sociedades contemporâneas. Essa vertente criminológica, outrossim, procura problematizar a representação do crime pela mídia, com a consequente formação de loops e espirais de significados. No que concerne especificamente às torcidas organizadas, estas se consolidam como agrupamentos de torcedores sobretudo a partir da década de 1970, nelas estão presentes um forte senso de burocratização, distribuição bem delimitada de atribuições, assunção de uma complexa simbologia e o intuito de formação de um estilo de vida próprio. Fazendo uso dos conceitos trazidos pela criminologia cultural, e tomando em conta a complexa realidade das torcidas, é possível a identificação de uma causalidade nos atos de violência a partir dois caminhos. No primeiro, a violência pode ser interpretada pelo prazer e excitação que gera nos indivíduos que a vivenciam. Nesse caso, a participação em eventos violentos se daria por uma tentativa de busca do limite e resistência a um tédio onipresente. Paralelamente, não obstante, a violência também pode ser visualizada como ato comunicativo, de modo que sua execução estaria ligada a uma imposição física e simbólica de dominação por torcedores-organizados visando um reforço da identidade coletiva. Nesse sentido, a constatação de um grande número de casos de violência envolvendo confrontos entre torcidas organizadas, e que geram acentuada quantidade de mortes, acarreta em intensa reação por parte da mídia, gerando um pânico moral, e que se perfectibiliza em um processo de marginalização do grupo desviante. Como resposta a essa ameaça à sociedade, uma política repressora é posta em prática, mas que culmina por agravar a situação, em uma espécie de espiral de amplificação do desvio. É necessário, portanto, a superação desse modelo repressivo e adoção de práticas de resolução pacífica de conflitos.This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of the “organized groups of football fans” in the Brazilian social context as well as the involvement of such groups in episodes of violence and the response from society, public authorities of the media to such events in making a public security policy. And to do so, an approach from the paradigm of cultural criminology will be used. This field is noted by the presence of a significant cultural dimension in observation of crime and its control. It is developed in the context of late modernity, marked by social fragmentation and a continuous process of exclusion, which originate a deep sense of ontological insecurity. Crime is seen in its phenomenology, with the understanding of the feelings and emotions that make criminal experience so attractive to criminals. Likewise, cultural criminology studies the edgework category as a mean of transcendence, and observes the presence of a paradigmatic situation of boredom in the structure of contemporary societies. This criminological field, furthermore, aims to discuss the representation of crime by the media, with the consequent formation of loops and spirals of meaning. Regarding the “organized groups of football fans”, these are consolidated as fans groupings since the 1970s, are present in them a strong sense of bureaucratization, well-defined distribution of duties, assumption of a complex symbology and the formation of an own lifestyle. Using some concepts brought by cultural criminology, and taking into account the complex reality of the “organized groups of football fans”, it is possible to identify a sort of causality in acts of violence from two paths. At first, the violence can be interpreted for the pleasure and excitement that it generates on the individuals who experience it. In this case, a participation in violent events would take place by the chase of limit and resistance to a ubiquitous boredom. At the same time, however, violence can also be viewed as a communicative act so that its execution would be linked to a physical and symbolic imposition of domination by “organized-fans” aimed at strengthening the collective identity. In this sense, the acknowledgement of a large number of cases of violence involving brawls between “organized groups of football fans”, that generates strong amount of deaths, brings an intense reaction from the media, creating a moral panic, and that is materialized in a process of marginalizing the deviant group. In response to this threat to society, a repressive policy is put into practice, but that ends up aggravating the situation in a deviation amplification spiral. It is therefore necessary to overcome this repressive model and adoption of practices of peaceful conflict resolution
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
