Robert Neumann: Mit eigener Feder
Robert Neumann (1897–1957, Austrian exiled author and Vicepresidet of the PEN International, was even a disputatious antifascist political writer. His essays, his letters and biograpical documents give a vivid portrait of the diversity of literary life in Germay and Austria (before 1933/after 1958) and of exile in England (1933–1958).Der österreichische Schriftsteller Robert Neumann (1897–1975), Exilant und Vizepräsident des PEN International, war auch ein streitbarer antifaschistischer Publizist.
Relative Haagerup property for arbitrary von Neumann algebras
We introduce the relative Haagerup approximation property for a unital, expected inclusion of arbitrary von Neumann algebras and show that if the smaller algebra is finite then the notion only depends on the inclusion itself, and not on the choice of the conditional expectation. Several variations of the definition are shown to be equivalent in this case, and in particular the approximating maps can be chosen to be unital and preserving the reference state. The concept is then applied to amalgamated free products of von Neumann algebras and used to deduce that the standard Haagerup property for a von Neumann algebra is stable under taking free products with amalgamation over finite-dimensional subalgebras. The general results are illustrated by examples coming from q-deformed Hecke-von Neumann algebras and von Neumann algebras of quantum orthogonal groups.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Analysi
A comparison of deflation and the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner
In this paper we compare various preconditioners for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. We compare the well-known balancing Neumann Neumann preconditioner used in domain decomposition methods with a so-called deflation preconditioner. We prove that the effective condition number of the deflated preconditioned system is always, i.e. for all deflation vectors and all restrictions and prolongations, below the condition number of the system preconditioned by the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner. Even more, we establish that both preconditioners lead to almost the same spectra. The zero eigenvalues of the deflation preconditioned system are replaced by eigenvalues which are one if the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner is used. Moreover, we proved that the A-norm of the errors of the iterates build by the deflation preconditioner is always below the A-norm of the errors of the iterates build by the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner. Additionally, the amount of work of one iteration of the de ation preconditioned system is less than the amount of work of one iteration of the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioned system. Finally, we establish that the deflation preconditioner and the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner produces the same iterates if one uses certain starting vectors. Numerical results for porous media flows emphasize the theoretical results.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Nominalist Heuristics and Economic Theory
This paper introduces a new theoretic entity, a nominalist heuristic, defined as a focus on prominent numbers, indices or ratios. Abstractions used in the evaluation stage of decision making typically involve nominalist heuristics that are incompatible with expected utility theory which excludes the evaluation stage, and are also incompatible with prospect theory which assumes that, while the evaluation procedure can involve systematic mistakes, the overall decision situation is nevertheless sufficiently simple: 1) for economists and psychologists to identify what is a mistake, and 2) to be compatible with maximisation. But in the typical complex situation giving rise to nominalist heuristics neither 1) nor 2) hold, and therefore what is required is a fundamentally different class of models that allow for the progressive anticipated changes in knowledge ahead faced under risk and uncertainty, namely models under the umbrella of SKAT, the Stages of Knowledge Ahead Theory. A sequel paper. Pope et al 2009b, shows field and laboratory evidence of heuristics in the form of prominent numbers entering exchange rate determination.nominalism, money illusion, heuristic, unpredictability, experiment, SKAT the Stages of Knowledge Ahead Theory, prominent numbers, prominent indices, prominent ratios, equality, historical benchmarks, complexity, decision costs, evaluation
Risk in a Simple Temporal Framework for Expected Utility Theory and for SKAT, the Stages of Knowledge Ahead Theory
The paper re-expresses arguments against the normative validity of expected utility theory in Robin Pope (1983, 1991a, 1991b, 1985, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007). These concern the neglect of the evolving stages of knowledge ahead (stages of what the future will bring). Such evolution is fundamental to an experience of risk, yet not consistently incorporated even in axiomatised temporal versions of expected utility. Its neglect entails a disregard of emotional and financial effects on well-being before a particular risk is resolved. These are arguments are complemented with an analysis of the essential uniqueness property in the context of temporal and atemporal expected utility theory and a proof of the absence of a limit property natural in an axiomatised approach to temporal expected utility theory. Problems of the time structure of risk are investigated in a simple temporal framework restricted to a subclass of temporal lotteries in the sense of David Kreps and Evan Porteus (1978). This subclass is narrow but wide enough to discuss basic issues. It will be shown that there are serious objections against the modification of expected utility theory axiomatised by Kreps and Porteus (1978, 1979). By contrast the umbrella theory proffered by Pope that she has now termed SKAT, the Stages of Knowledge Ahead Theory, offers an epistemically consistent framework within which to construct particular models to deal with particular decision situations. A model by Caplin and Leahy (2001) will also be discussed and contrasted with the modelling within SKAT (Pope, Leopold and Leitner 2006).

A Manifestation for Reinhard Heydrich at the ND
Segment from Český zvukový týdeník Aktualita (Czech Aktualita Sound Newsreel) 1942, issue no. 27A, captures the Pledge of Czech Theatre Professionals´ Allegiance to the Reich, a manifestation held at the National Theatre in Prague on 25 June 1942, which was to unequivocally condemn the assassination of Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. Speeches are delivered by actor Rudolf Deyl Jr. and Minister of Education and People´s Enlightenment Emanuel Moravec (silent). Actress Růžena Nasková and actors Karel Höger, Ferenc Futurista, and Stanislav Neumann are seen among the participants. The segment concludes with everyone performing the Nazi salute

Funeral of theatre director František Neumann in Brno
The segment captures the funeral of theatre director František Neumann held in Brno on 27 February 1929. The coffin is carried out of the building of the Mahen Theatre and loaded onto a horse-drawn hearse. The funeral procession moves along the streets of Brno towards the railway station, where the coffin is placed in a special funeral carriage. The train leaves for Prostějov, Neumann´s final resting place. The footage includes two versions of the film capturing the same event
