Biographical experiences in out-of-home care settings
Präsentation von Daniela Reimer's Kapitel in "Qualitative methods in studies of identities and attachment: mothers and children’s perspectives"In this hybrid seminar, Daniela Reimer and Mariela Neagu will discuss in-depth about biographical experiences in out of home care settings based on their biographical studies of foster mothers in Germany and Romanian born foster children and adoptees respectively. This talk will explore the complexity of family life, an essentially private territory, through the social care lens and how it impacts on the identity of those involved as ‘carers’ or ‘cared for’.
Daniela Reimer is Professor at the Institute of Childhood, Youth and Family at the Zurich University of Applied Science. She has conducted research on foster care and residential care and is the Coordinator of the International Foster Care Research Network, Member of the AcademiaNet and of the International Association for Outcome-Based Evaluation and Research on Family and Children’s Services. She is the author of the chapter on “Unplanned Breakdown of Foster Mothering” where she used biographical research methods to explore the identity challenges of foster mothers.
Mariela Neagu is Research Associate at SKOPE, Department of Education the University of Oxford. Her research interests encompass identity and wellbeing theories, in particular the recognition theory and the Capability Approach, children’s rights and the ethics of care. Her book ‘Voices from the Silent Cradles’ (Policy Press, 2021), sheds light on children’s homes, foster care, domestic and international adoption from the perspective of the young people who experienced these types of care

Traveling across disciplinary boundaries : a journey into applying literary criticism to public-facing texts by street-level bureaucrats
Researchers in the social sciences, including legal studies, political science, social work, and sociology, utilize specific, discipline-based approaches to analyzing written texts, including frequency counts of words and text segments and determining thematic patterns emerging from the data. This seminar, with speakers Katrin Križ and Daniela Reimer and discussant Tarja Pösö, aims to walk participants beyond the boundaries of these social science approaches by introducing the methods of literary criticism and reflecting on their methodological potential. What can social scientists learn from literary criticism methods for analyzing public-facing texts by street-level bureaucrats? “Public-facing texts” are documents by street-level bureaucrats like child protection caseworkers, judges, teachers, and police officers written for members of the public as part of public policy implementation. Examples of these texts in child protection are court judgments or university course curricula for future child protection caseworkers. This seminar explores how literary criticism methods could be valuable for systematically examining and interpreting these texts

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Managing Knowledge Assets for NPD Performance Improvement: Results of an Action Research Project
This paper explores the fundamental issue of how Knowledge Management
(KM) initiatives impact on business performance. Reflecting on the
management literature enabled the definition of a conceptual background which
has been tested and developed by an action research project. Drawing on the results
of this project the paper proposes a framework to support managers in defining,
planning, implementing and evaluating KM initiatives for performance
improvement
Multilingualism constitutes an urgent objective for education, which needs to involve teachers and researchers at all levels if we are to promote effective and autonomous learning in the young. Like Daniela Zorzi, the author considers herself a socially engaged linguist, and in memory of her friend’s work, offers a reflection on the key roles of languages and cultures and of multilingualism for professional success and social welfare today

Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções
This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance
in terms of environmental planning and management.AlBan Programme - n. E05M053040B
