This document proposes an analysis of the structure-reactivity relationships in the interaction between humic substances, metallic pollutants from the nuclear cycle, and mineral surfaces. It composes the scientific document, which allowed the author to defend a habilitation degree. It is mainly focused on the research works into which the author have been involved in on this particular thematic. Humic substances are issued from the degradation of the living. They have an important influence onto migration of metals in the environment. They are showing particular intrinsic physic and chemical, metal complexation, and adsorption onto mineral surfaces properties, which render the global comprehension of the different mechanisms somehow difficult. These three aspects are covered in this document. The first part is dedicated to the studies on composition, structure, and organization of humic substances, which cannot be considered as a well-defined type of chemical. They are a heterogeneous degradation product with a supramolecular organization, which is showing fractal properties from fractions up to several nanometers. Second part is on the complexation reactions. The different modelling strategies come from the difficulties on apprehending composition, structure, and organization of humic substances. The different models used are showing more or less strongly empiric characteristics. They can be derived from the mass action law, or explicitly account for heterogeneity, acido-basic, or ionic strength related parameters. The third and latter part covers the adsorption studies. The main property is adsorptive fractionation, which induces modification of chemical composition of humic substances between the surface and the solution. It also induces modification of complexation properties between the adsorbed and non-adsorbed fractions. Because of adsorptive fractionation, and the particular influence of ionic strength on humic substances, and of complexed metals, adsorption, the studies on simple model molecules to represent humic substances reactivity are an illusion. The global comprehension will mainly be obtained from the understanding of dedicated studies.

This document takes a prospective stock of the natural organic matter influence on the possible effects on radionuclide migration, as well as a brief critical analysis of the literature data. A comparison with the retention of the “simple” organic complexants is done in order to fix the limit of the “simplistic” analogies done in the literature very often. It appears that the magnitude of the effects is function of the residence time in the medium, and of the possibilities for the organic complexes to be retained on the mineral surfaces. The contact time between radionuclides and the natural organic matter is also an influent parameter, as it influences part of the reversibility of this interaction vis-a-vis surface retention.Modelling of the metal-organic-surface systems is only satisfying up to now when accounting fractions of organic matter that are less susceptible to form colloidal aggregates, i.e., fulvic acids. These non-aggregated fractions could be considered as simple ligands in a first approximation. Conversely, when it comes to aggregated colloids of organic origin, i.e., humic acids, modelling are limited by the lack of theoretical understanding of their structure and of their evolution in response to geochemical condition variations, as ionic strength (harsh meteoric events), acidity or water composition (non-saturated water table).Ce document fait un bilan prospectif, ainsi qu’une brève analyse critique des données de la littérature, sur l’influence de la matière organique naturelle sur les éventuels effets accélérants ou retard de la migration des radionucléides.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The PRODATA Thermochemical database. A database applied for uranium mining operations
This document presents the thermochemical data, i.e. constants and functions, that areincluded in the database PRODATA, which is developed to answer the needs of ORANOMining in terms of exploration, exploitation, and remediation of uranium mining facilities. Thereactions for complexation, dissolution-precipitation and gas solubility can be exported in threedatabase files that can be used by either software packages PHREEQC, CHESS, andGeochemist’s WorkBench (GWB). The PRODATA database includes data for uranium andradium, and all elements that are necessary to model their comportment in the different contextsfor a total of 38 elements. The data selection is based on CODATA and NEA-OECD selections. The coherency and traceability are checked whenever possible. The ionic strength correction isdone through either the Davies equation or the specific ion interaction theory (SIT). Applicationof the database files is proposed for a solution that is containing the 38 elements included inPRODATA. Pourbaix diagrams at varying O2(g) fugacity, and speciations at atmospheric O2(g)and 1 atm H2(g), are proposed to exemplify the performance of the database.
Influence of aromatics and substituents on the time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy of Eu(III)-complexes
International audienceSimple organic carboxylic ligands have since long been proposed as analogues of the metallic cations complexation processes of complex organic mixtures, e.g. natural organic matter (NOM). There are quite substantial amounts of spectroscopic evidence that are showing that this approximation is not totally verified experimentally. The main evidence is the widespread occurrence of the luminescence bi-exponential decay of the NOM-complexed lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An) at their +III redox state [1-3].Even if numerous complexation constants of Ln(III)- and An(III)-carboxylate complexes were determined spectroscopically in time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy [4], a global view on the influence of the different types of organic acids is still lacking, especially for aromatic acids. Some data are available [5-7], but no clear evolution of both the luminescence spectra and decay times have been proposed.I here propose to compare the luminescence comportment of Eu(III) complexed by a series of organic carboxylic acids, namely acetic, benzoic, phthalic, para-hydroxybenzoic, and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The luminescence spectrum will be compared as well as their relative luminescence decay (Fig.1). The influence of the different substituents will be evidence
Predominance of the alkaline earth (II) triscarbonatoactinyl (VI) complexes in different geochemical contexts: Review of existing data and estimation of potentially unidentified species
International audienceFrom the available thermodynamic data in the literature, a review of the impact of the formation of complexes between triscarbonatoactinyl(VI) and alkaline earth(II) (Ae) is estimated under varying conditions. First, using the ascertained thermodynamic data available from the commissioned reviews from the Nuclear Energy Agency (Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development) Thermochemical DataBank Project on actinides (An) U, Np, and Pu, and from recently determined AeUO(CO) thermodynamic functions, the formation of AeUO(CO) complexes for Pu(VI) and Np(VI) are estimated using linear free energy relationships (LFERs). The data are in good agreement with the sole determination of AePuO(CO) from Jo et al. (Dalton Trans. 49, 11605), which gives a relative confidence in the LFERs, and allows the application to actual situations. From existing uranium data, first, the impact of the origin of the data on the calculated predominance is addressed under 0.1 M NaCl and atmospheric CO(g); second, the influence of ionic strength and salinity on predominance is estimated; and finally, the influence of temperature up to 50 °C on the solubility of uraninite in a deep geological radioactive waste storage or disposal site is calculated. For neptunium and plutonium, the impact of the potential log°(AeUO(CO)) on Pourbaix diagrams of Pu and Np in Mg-Ca-CO media are estimated from Jo et al. (Dalton Trans. 49, 11605) and LFERs. Finally, the application to the speciation of Pu and Np in seawater is proposed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Utilisation Des Milieux Dispersés Pour La Détermination Des Lanthanides Et Des Actinides Dans Les Eaux Naturelles : Application À L'uranium
In natural solutions, repartition of uranium complexes is a subject of controversy. In order to clarify some points, we have used time-resolved laser-induced spectrofluorimetry and micellar enhanced ultrafiltration(MEUF). TRLFS allows analyzing uranium at low level but with no information on the species in solution. MEUF allows inducing separations between ions as a function of their charges. After the quantification of the uranium (VI) fluorescence inhibition in non-complexing media by anionic surfactants (sodium alkylsulfonate and dodecylsulfate), a TRLFS study, using an ion-exchange model, has allowed obtaining exchange constantes of UO at the surface of alkylsulfate micelles. A theoretical interpretation of the retention phenomenon limited to high dilution has been proposed. Then, we have developed the application of the TRLFS-MEUF coupling to the study of the repartition of uranium (VI) species in solution. Applying the ion-exchange model to represente the MUEF results as a function of pH, we have shown that the UO(OH) complex is not predominant under our experimental conditions . This implies that its thermodynamic constant is at least two orders of magnitude lower than to the one proposed by some data bases. A fluorescence enhancement of uranium (VI) has been obtained in non-ionic micelles in presence of an organic complexant.
