Trying to explain aspects of the militancy and personal characteristics-of ecologists as well as their work in different parts of the world, not interferring in the methodological characteristics peculiar to human sciences (interviews, questionnaires and ethnographic reports) the author suggests “fiction narratives” as a method. Their origin is connected with the ethic aspects belonging to the privacy of the militants which are exhibited publicly. Literary contributions from Jorge Luis Borges, Clarice Lispector and Fernando Pessoa have been used in the production of this text.
Affection, environmental education and politics: Encounters with Nita and Paulo Freire
Abstract This article seeks to focus on the influence Paulo Freire had on a young teacher and activist ecologist in São Paulo during the last years of the military dictatorship in Brazil. That influence still remains nowadays and is affected by the friendship with Nita Freire. Personal annotations written during lectures given by Paulo Freire at PUCSP in 1983 are here revealed. Moments in which Nita and Paulo Freire dialogued with and influenced ecologists, environmental educators and a new generation of activists, students, teachers and researchers are also pointed out. The author emphasizes the mutual admiration between Paulo Freire and the French educator George Snyders through the events, books and articles for which he was a mediator.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Based on the foundation of Freire’s pedagogy, the students of the Mathematics Course at the Federal University of Amapá - UNIFAP, are provided with the chance to carry out activities, which involve both, Math Education, Ethnomathematics specifically, and Environmental Education. Through these previously mentioned activities, there is a significant contribution as to the formation of criticai capacity concerning the social and environmental problems of our society, for the integration of mathematical contents with environmental situations lead to the respect towards nature and environmental preservation. Mathematical questions related to the environmental problems of the Amazon, specifically in the State of Amapá, as well as several proposals concerning materiais produced for the teaching of mathematical contents articulating Ethnomathematics and Environmental Education, have been included in this work. This initiative made it possible for the students of the Mathematics Course to understand that it is a must to make a relation between what is taught and our everyday lives. The utilization of such proposal enables mathematics educators to challenge their students to cope with new situations, providing them with conditions to become criticai and active citizens in their own communities being questioners of the environmental and social problems they are faced with.Centro de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CDS)Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento Sustentáve
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
A Educação Ambiental frente aos desafios apresentados pelos discursos contemporâneos sobre a natureza Environmental Education and the challenges presented by the contemporary discourses about nature
The notion of nature has played an important role in philosophy and also in Environmental Education. Contemporary philosophers such as Gianni Vattimo and Newton Aquiles von Zuben declare that the notion of a single nature has contributed to the growth of a dogmatic metaphysics that has crystallized political and religious totalitarianisms. Environmental Education in Latin America has constituted a theoretical field and a privileged public space for the diffusion of non-dogmatic, non-totalitarian, notions of nature in close relationship to cultural and social diversity. At a first moment of Environmental Education the notion of nature was linked to natural resources. However, after specific themes related to the contemporary discourses about nature, such as transgenetics and biodiversity, have gained the public sphere we argue that Environmental Education has been facing new theoretical, political, ecological, social, cultural and pedagogical challenges. In the present article we try to identify and analyze some of these challenges, having as our theoretical foundation the ideas of Italian thinker Gianni Vattimo, and of Brazilian philosopher Newton Aquiles von Zuben, on the aspects related to bioethics and to the political role of education in the formation of citizens. We conclude that the approach to nature present in contemporary discourses helps to open out the dialogue between Environmental Education and bioethics, and to materialize it in daily social and pedagogical practices, thus representing a concrete alternative to allow citizens to face up to the challenges brought about by biodiversity and the transgenics with scientific, ethical and political arguments
