On the perceptual aesthetics of interactive objects.
This study examined the aesthetics of interactive objects (IOs), which are three-dimensional physical artefacts that exhibit
autonomous behaviour when handled. The aim of the research was threefold: first, to investigate whether aesthetic
preference for distinctive objects’ structures emerges in compound stimulation; second, to explore whether there exists
aesthetic preference for distinctive objects’ behaviours; and, finally, to test whether there exists aesthetic preference
for specific combinations of objects’ structures and behaviours. The following variables were systematically manipulated:
(a) IOs’ contour (rounded vs angular), (b) IOs’ size (small vs large), (c) IOs’ surface texture (rough vs smooth), and (d)
IOs’ behaviour (lighting, sounding, vibrating, and quiescent). Results show that behaviour was the dominant factor: it
influenced aesthetics more than any other characteristic; vibrating IOs were preferred over lighting and sounding IOs,
supporting the importance of haptic processing in aesthetics. Results did not confirm the size and smoothness effects
previously reported in vision and touch, respectively, which suggests that the aesthetic preference that emerges in
isolated conditions may be different in compound stimulation. Results corroborate the smooth curvature effect. We
suggest that behavior may be an aesthetic primitive

MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Between a city divided and an oasis of peace: narratives of identity and belonging in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict
Hebron and Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam present a study in contrasts within the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Hebron is, perhaps, the most deeply divided city in the conflict. It is the only Palestinian city in the West Bank with Jewish settlers living in its center and the site of constant military presence and frequent hostilities. NSWS, on the other hand, is the only intentionally shared village between Palestinians and Israelis within Israel. Additionally, the Jewish settlement of Hebron and establishment of NSWS have oddly parallel histories stemming from distinct reactions to the changing environment within Israel in the aftermath of the June 1967 War, and both communities have produced texts that seek to explain and persuade a broader public of the merits and importance of their positions and activities through the articulation of collective narratives. The narratives produced by each community articulate starkly dissimilar approaches to the construction of identity and belonging. The different approaches of the two communities hold up mirrors, from opposite positions, to the construction of identity and belonging within Israeli society and its connection to the perpetuation of the conflict. Additionally, the absence of self-produced narratives on the part of the Palestinian community of Hebron illuminates the historic construction of Palestinians as an illegitimate people incapable of presenting itself to the outside world without the legitimating mediation of a ‘reliable’ third-party. Finally, the contrast between the construction of identity and belonging by the Jewish settlers of Hebron and the community of NSWS, as well as NSWS’s activities in the field of intergroup encounter work, point to the possibility of creating third spaces within the setting of the conflict for seemingly mutually exclusive sides to negotiate new possibilities of existence outside the essentialized and exclusionary confines of the current paradigm
Hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor and MET are involved in arterial repair and atherogenesis.
Several studies have shown that in the arterial wall hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) is expressed by smooth muscle cells (SMCs) but acts on endothelial cells, not SMCs. Other studies, however, have indicated that SMCs can respond to HGF/SF. We have reinvestigated expression and activity of HGF/SF and its receptor MET in arterial SMC and endothelial cell cultures and in whole arteries after superficial or deep injury or atherogenesis. High-density cultures of SMCs produced HGF/SF but did not express MET, whereas SMCs, at the leading edge of injured cultures, expressed both ligand and receptor and showed a dramatic motility and growth response to HGF/SF. In line with these results, HGF/SF and MET expression was undetectable in the media of uninjured carotid arteries but was induced after deep arterial injury in areas of SMC migration in the neointima. Strong MET expression was also observed in the SMCs of the atherosclerotic lesions of homozygous apoE(-/-) mice, whereas HGF/SF was expressed by macrophage-derived foam cells. These results demonstrate that MET is induced in migrating and proliferating SMCs and that HGF/SF and MET are key mediators of the SMC response in atherogenesis
[EN] This research focuses on the analysis of the last three works built by Affonso Eduardo Reidy, projected in 1962.
The Coreto, Morro da Viuva and Flamengo pavilions base their structural conception on the logic of concrete shells and folded plates. The first part of the document focusses in the features, logic, and origin of this system, analysing and reflecting on how its characteristics could, gradually, be introduced in the context of the Modernism.
The second part of the document analyses Reidy's thinking, his theoretical framework, influences, and social context, exposing the professional and personal environment of the architect. Once the system and the architect are analysed, the research continues with the detection of the different strategies used by Reidy to approach the structural conceptualization in his projects, making a chronological review of his works and highlighting the most relevant aspects that may lead him, at the end of his career, to project the Aterro do Flamengo pavilions.
Finally, in the last chapter, a thorough analysis of the pavilions is made based on the original blueprints found in the Fundação Parques e Jardins archive, in Rio de Janeiro. This analysis firstly approaches the context of the park, reflecting on the architectural typology in which the pavilions are defined - a garden pavilion - and how this typology could influence Reidy in the way they are projected. In a second part, other aspects that concern the architectural analysis are developed: typology, spatiality, morphology and finally the construction system used. The compilation of all these aspects leads to some conclusions about the experimental approach of the pavilions and the way they fit within Reidy's professional career.García-Gasco Lominchar, S. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
