The French Exile of Rudolf Leonhard 1933-1945
Dezember 1953 starb Rudolf Leonhard in Berlin. Sein Freund, Alfred Kantorowicz, schrieb in seinem Nachruf für Rudolf Leonhard: „Wir sind ihm viel schuldig geblieben.“ Daran hat sich bis in die Gegenwart nichts geändert.Since 1928 the German author Rudolf Leonhard (* 1888) took home in Paris. After being later officially forced into exile from 1933 on, Leonhard became a public figure by initiating and founding the „Interessenvertretung deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller im Ausland“, that had support and protection of German authors in Paris as incentive. Being incarcerated in several warcamps from September 1939 onwards (Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, Le Vernet, Les Milles) and in prison in Castres, Leonhard continued to be a very productive writer, being continously supported by his wife Yvette Prost-Leonhard and several friends. After escaping the prison in Castres Rudolf Leonhard worked for the Résistance in Marseille, only very few of his writings could be published though. Moving back to Paris in 1945 Leonhard tried to mediate between French and German culture. Seriously fallen ill he later was forced to remigrate. He moved to the DDR in 1950, yet without ever receiving financial support. Rudolf Leonhard died on 19. Dezember 195XXX in Berlin, recalled by his friend Alfred Kantorowicz as someone not recognized and supported enough at his lifetime
Identification of Charged Leptons in Jets at Future Higgs Factories
The 2012 discovery of the 12 GeV Higgs boson at the LHC, and of no other particle since then, have brought a consensus to the particle physics community that an e+e- Higgs factory is the highest priority next collider. However, Higgs measurements suffer from the loss of undetected neutrino energy due to semi-leptonic decays (SLDs) in the most common decay mode H to b anti-b. Previous work has shown the possibility to reconstruct the missing neutrino if the corresponding lepton and its production vertex are found. Search algorithms for these leptons are already in use to improve b-jet identification. In this work, a novel BDT-based method to identify SLD electrons and muons has been developed. Furthermore, a particle identification (PID) method for electrons and muons from jets was also built. The new PID can identify electrons with an efficiency of 95% and a purity of 98% given that dE/dx information is available. For muons, 74% efficiency and 89% purity were reached. Combined with this new PID, the developed SLD ID method can identify SLD electrons and muons with an efficiency of 65% and a purity of 77%
Microbiological evaluation of different reprocessing methods for cuffed and un-cuffed tracheostomy tubes in home-care and hospital setting
Background: Manufacturers’ recommendations on cleaning of tracheostomy tubes focus on general warning information and non-specific manual cleaning procedures. The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate different reprocessing methods and to determine the mechanical integrity and functionality of tracheostomy tubes following reprocessing.
Methods: Sixteen cuffed or un-cuffed tracheostomy tubes obtained from hospital in-patients were reprocessed using one of the following reprocessing methods: a) manual brushing and rinsing with tap water, b) manual brushing followed by disinfection with a glutaraldehyde solution, c) manual brushing followed machine-based cleaning in a dishwasher, and d) manual brushing followed by ultrasound cleaning in a commercially available ultrasound device. Microbial burden of the tubes before and after reprocessing was assessed by measurement of microbial colony-forming units per mL (CFU/mL) of rinsing fluid. After cleaning, tracheostomy tubes were investigated for loss of functionality.
Findings: Manual brushing and rinsing with tap water reduced microbial colonization in average by 102 CFU/mL, but with poor reproducibility and reliability. Complete microbial reduction was achieved only with additional chemical or machine-based thermal disinfection. Ultrasound sonification yielded no further microbial reduction after manual brushing.
Conclusion: Manual brushing alone will not result in complete eradication of microorganism colonising cuffed or un-cuffed tracheostomy tubes. However, manual cleaning followed by chemical or thermal disinfection may be regarded as safe and reproducible reprocessing method. If a machine-based reprocessing method is used for cuffed tubes, the cuffs’ ventilation hose must be secured in a safe position prior to thermal disinfection
August Strindberg through the eyes of Karl Leonhard: A dialogue of cultures between Germany and Sweden
The present article is an attempt to bring together anthropology, literary science
and psychiatry with the aim to consider how life and work of August Strindberg
(1849–1912) is perceived in the last opus of the well-known German psychiatrist Karl
Leonhard (1904–1988), the author of the book Accentuated Personalities, which is very
well-known for the Russian reader. His views and evaluations form a bright period in
the history of the reception of the works of the Swedish writer in Germany and can be
seen as a result of the dialogue between the Swedish and German cultures, inscribed
in the history of medical thought of the epoch and pathological literary criticism.
Leonhard argued that Strindberg was wrongly treated as a schizophrenic but suffered
in fact from cycloid psychosis. The methodical approach, which Leonhard employed
to prove his point, is partly based on the tradition of literary anthropology and is close
to the traditions of the Russian humanistic psychiatry. Although Leonhard’s work was a subject to criticism, he shows interesting insights with current relevance. Invocating
Strindberg’s haunting works Days of Loneliness, Hell or Occult Diary, the authors of
the present article reproduce the symptom complex of the psychotic, emphasize
the importance of Leonhard’s complex and elaborate work, and draw attention to
Strindberg’s narrative style from the point of view of mental disorders and psychology.
In conclusion, the authors of the article announce the publication of the full text of
Leonhard’s essay in Russian translation, with literary and medical commentaries
A “História Natural de Portugal” de Leonhard Thurneysser zum Thurn, ca. 1555-1556
The existence of a German manuscript by Leonhard Thurneysser from Basel, started in 1555 “in the house of the noble lord and Lusitanian knight Master Damiani de Goes”, had fallen into the oblivion of historians for several decades. It contains reports on a number of plants and animals observed by the author during his stay in Portugal.
Another very curious aspect is his description of the black Africans he met in Lisbon. In spite of the text being written in early-modern high German, most of the names of the vegetal or animal species are mentioned in Portuguese. A project for a complete transcription of the extensive text is in progress
Kriegsheimkehr und Anerkennung in Leonhard Franks Erzählung Karl undAnna (1926)
The returning soldier has become a paradigmatic figure in 20th century literature, following the real mass phenomenon of the First World War. In this regard, many texts of the 1920s adopt classic motifs and patterns such as references to Homer's "Odyssey" or to the story of Martin Guerre—for instance "Karl and Anna" (1926), a novella by German author Leonhard Frank (1882–1961). Here, after his arrival from Russian war captivity, the veteran Karl grabs the spot of his fellow soldier Richard. With Richard's wife Anna he 'continues' a relationship as 'Richard.' Frank's novella, turned into several movies, is a tale of mistaken identities and betrayal and broaches the issue of recognition with regard to the returning soldier and his love relationship
