APIS : a real-time message-oriented middleware
Includes bibliographical references. This thesis presents an investigation and evaluation of a Real-Time Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM) implementation using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software components. The Application Interface Services (APIS) is an implementation of a real-time MOM that provides network services to sub-systems of a large-scale distributed system. It is shown that the characteristics of a MOM are well suited to a real-time message distribution application and that APIS, as an implementation of a real-time MOM, can provide a heterogeneous network interlace to subsystems of a distributed real-time nature. This simplifies the task of implementing information exchange and provides a definitive boundary for assigning responsibility during system design and development
Linear maps on real C* - algebras and related structures
PhDIn this thesis we obtain new results on the structures of real C*-algebras and nonsurjective
isometries between them. Some of the results have been published in
[1].
We prove a spectral inequality for real Banach*-algebras and give characterisations
of real C*-algebras among Banach*-algebras.
We study the ideal and facial structures in real C*-algebras and show that
there is a bijection from the class of norm-closed left ideals I of a real C*-algebra
A to the class of weak*-closed faces F of the state space S(A). The bijection
is given by I 7! F = f 2 S(A) : (a a) = 0 for all a 2 Ig, with inverse
F 7! I = fa 2 A : (a a) = 0 for all 2 Fg.
As an application, we use the structures of faces to show an algebraic property
of linear maps on real C*-algebras. We prove that if T : A ! B is a linear
contraction between real C*-algebras A and B, then there is a projection p in the
second dual B00 of B such that
T(aa a)p = T(a)T(a) T(a)p (a 2 A).
If T is an isometry, not necessarily surjective, we obtain a stronger result which
also extends a celebrated result of Kadison on surjective isometries between complex
C*-algebras. We prove the following theorem.
Let T be a linear isometry between two real C*-algebras A and B, which can
be non-surjective. Then for each a 2 A there exists a partial isometry u 2 B00 and
a projection p 2 B00 such that
(i) fu; T(ff; g; hg); ug = fu; fT(f); T(g); T(h)g; ug;
(ii) T(ff; g; hg)p = fT(f); T(g); T(h)gp,
for all f; g; h in the real JB*-triple A(a) generated by a 2 A, where ff; g; hg is
the triple product defined by 2ff; g; hg = fg h + hg f. Moreover, fu; T( ):ug :
A(a) ! B00 and T( )p : A(a) ! B00 are isometries.
This theorem cannot be proved by simple complexification. We give an example
of a real linear isometry which cannot be complexified to a complex isometry.
We conclude by proving a theorem which states that a Jordan*-homomorphism
T : A ! B between real C*-algebras A and B is a sum of a C*-homomorphism
and a C*-antihomomorphism, extending a well-known result for complex C*-
algebras

This dissertation proposes a framework for dynamic, value-based processor time allocation in multi-modal real-time applications. The framework distributes time reservations using optimization models that can be combined and extended to meet the system#s needs. Because the nature of applications varies, several models were proposed to handle discrete, continuous or hybrid modes of operation and optimize task fairness or a given criterion of optimal system performance. The models range from simple to complex generalizations of the knapsack problem for which exac algorithms, heuristics with performance guarantees, and polynomial-time approximation schemes were proposed. As a means of evaluation, the framework was applied to the vision, control and guidance systems on a mobile robot and to a real multimedia decoder, applications that capture the nature of the tasks this framework aims to support

Organizational structure in the hospitality industry : a comparative analysis of hotel real estate investment trusts (REITs) and hotel C-Corporations
Thesis (S.M. in Real Estate Development)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Real Estate Development in Conjunction with the Center for Real Estate, 2012.Cataloged from department-submitted PDF version of thesis. This electronic version was submitted and approved by the author's academic department as part of an electronic thesis pilot project. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 102-108).Current legislation has made it possible for real estate investment trusts (REITs) to earn income beyond purely passive sources such as rents from real property or interest from mortgages on real property. As a result, both the number and market capitalization of hotel REITs have substantially increased, and the difference between hotel REITs and hotel C-corporations has narrowed. However, companies such as Starwood Hotels have reverted back to the C-corporation structure. Given these organizational changes and the increasing dominance of hotel REITs, there is a need to analyze hotel REITs and hotel C-corporations in a comparative framework. Equity REITs and C-corporations have been studied extensively. However, research on various organizational forms in the hospitality industry is somewhat limited. This study attempts to fill this gap by comparing the stock market performance of publicly traded hotel REITs with hotel C-Corporations from 1993 to 2011. Furthermore, the impact of significant events such as mergers and acquisitions and legislative amendments on firms' stock price are also observed. Finally, detailed case studies of companies that underwent corporate restructuring are conducted. The research objective of this thesis is to examine (a) whether REITs are an efficient organizational structure for the lodging industry; and (b) whether the tax benefits of REITs offset the regulatory constraints they face. The study infers that REIT acquirers have an advantage in mergers and acquisitions, but in all other situations, the net benefits of REITs are not as clear. On market cap basis, the performance of hotel REITs and hotel C-Corporations was almost identical, however when equally weighted, hotel REITs outperformed their C-Corporation counterparts. In addition, the results show that the REIT returns are highly volatile. On a broad level the hospitality business has two distinct segments -- ownership of hotels and management of hotels and the degree of operating flexibility offered is one of the main factors that differentiate REITs from the C-Corporation counterparts. Therefore, this study concludes that the choice of corporate structure depends greatly on a firm's business strategy.by Purva Gujar.S.M.in Real Estate Developmen
