Financing Capture Ready Coal-Fired Power Plants in China by Issuing Capture Options

    No full text
‘Capture Ready’ is a design concept enabling fossil fuel plants to be retrofitted more economically with carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technologies, however financing the cost of capture ready can be problematic, especially in the developing world. We propose that fossil fuel plants issue tradable Capture Options to acquire financing. The Capture Option concept could move CCS forward politically in countries such as China, speed up CCS technology development, help Capture Ready investors diversify risk, and offer global warming investors an alternative investment opportunity. As a detailed case study, we assess the value of a Capture Option and Capture Ready plant for a 600 MW supercritical pulverized coal power plant in China, using a cash flow model with Monte-Carlo simulations. The gross value of Capture Ready varies from CNY3m (0.4m)toCNY633m(0.4m) to CNY633m (84.4m) at an 8% discount rate and the Capture Option is valued at CNY113m (15.1m)toCNY1255m(15.1m) to CNY1255m (167.3m) for two of the four scenarios analyzed

    Cult: A Composite Novel

    No full text
Cult (redacted) The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence. Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults. The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic. Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts

Polymer multimode waveguide optical and electronic PCB manufacturing

    No full text
The paper describes the research in the £1.3 million IeMRC Integrated Optical and Electronic Interconnect PCB Manufacturing (OPCB) Flagship Project in which 8 companies and 3 universities carry out collaborative research and which was formed and is technically led by the author. The consortium’s research is aimed at investigating a range of fabrication techniques, some established and some novel, for fabricating polymer multimode waveguides from several polymers, some formulations of which are being developed within the project. The challenge is to develop low cost waveguide manufacturing techniques compatible with commercial PCB manufacturing and to reduce their alignment cost. The project aims to take the first steps in making this hybrid optical waveguide and electrical copper track printed circuit board disruptive technology widely available by establishing and incorporating waveguide design rules into commercial PCB layout software and transferring the technology for fabricating such boards to a commercial PCB manufacturer. To focus the research the project is designing an optical waveguide backplane to tight realistic constraints, using commercial layout software with the new optical design rules, for a demonstrator into which 4 daughter cards are plugged, each carrying an aggregate of 80 Gb/s data so that each waveguide carries 10 Gb/s

Copy of a letter to Arkansas Senator David H. Pryor on providing materials, including a yearbook from Manzanar, to be used in the hearing on the S1009 bill. The Japanese American Relocation Collection is composed of ephemera related to the relocation program during World War II. Items include the official government report of Manzanar Relocation Center, a photo album, post-war activism materials related to preserving and remembering the camps, various clippings, and documents. The strength of this collection is found in its many perspectives on the controversial relocation program and how it has been presented since World War II

David Cohen de Lara y su léxico Ir David: sobre algunas fuentes

    No full text
The article proposes to analyze the composition of Ir David (Amsterdam, 1638), a glossary of Greek and Latin words existing in rabbinical literature. Its author, David Cohen de Lara mentions in the prologue the sources used but omits the one of Thesaurus Linguae Graecae of H. Stephanus, whose presence is indisputable, as shown by some examples that are transcribed in the work. The mention of Flavius Josephus is significant since it allows to conjecture the method of work of the author. El artículo propone analizar la composición de Ir David (Ámsterdam, 1638), un glosario de las palabras griegas y latinas existentes en la literatura rabínica. Growth, spawning and habitat use of catfishes in the Delaware River Estuary:

In the Delaware River estuary, native white catfish (Ameiurus catus Linnaeus 1758) have appeared to decline as the introduced channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque 1818) has become more abundant. To determine the current status of these populations and the habitats they use, we surveyed four zones of the Delaware River estuary from April to November, 2007. Hoop nets (N=497) were set in mainstem river, lower tributary, and middle tributary habitats. Upper tributary habitats near the head-of-tide were angled. Our findings indicated that the ratio of channel catfish to white catfish was much less than documented in the early 1990’s. Channel catfish and white catfish were found throughout the study area, during all seasons. Channel catfish and white catfish catch-per-net-night (CPNN) increased significantly from spring to fall. ANOVA of white catfish CPNN revealed a significant two-way interaction indicating movement downstream and into the lower estuary during the fall. Both species had unstable age structures indicating variable recruitment. Variable recruitment may account for past differences in ratios of channel catfish to white catfish. Channel catfish in this study lived longer (22 years) when compared to channel catfish collected in other nearby river systems. This difference may be a function of comparing otolith ages (in this study) with age maxima determined by spines and other techniques known to underestimate the age of old catfishes. Few brown bullhead and no yellow bullhead or flathead catfish were collected.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 113-118)by David H. Kelle

David Weyrick Interview, 02 April 2009

David Weyrick, author of To These Things You Must Return, a popular history of the Boy Scout camp, Camp Manatoc, relates the history of the Camp, including the bequest of land by H. Carl Butler, efforts to raise funding for construction, and the purchase of more land as the camp outgrew its original space. As a long time Boy Scout volunteer, Weyrick talks about the history of Scouting in the Akron area, his involvement as a youth and as an adult, and his research while writing the history of the camp. He also discusses the importance of Scouting in connecting modern boys with nature and the obstacles that must be overcome in order to reach urban youth. Weyrick notes the positive relationship between Manatoc and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park service, and briefly mentions activities available in the park
