This dissertation aims to show how different narratives can build a diversity of images (auto) biographicals of Frida Kahlo from her own legacy material: letters, journal and self-portraits. The writing of herself and the daily life eternization by her memories lead to biographical constructions of Frida Kahlo specially the ones written by Patricia Mayayo in Frida Kahlo- against the mith; Rauda Jamis in Frida Kahlo; and Jill Laidlaw in Frida Kahlo. The biografema concept, of Barthes, will serve as a basis of a reading through fragments and details

Creating the park cool island in an inner-city neighborhood: heat mitigation strategy for Phoenix, AZ

abstract: We conducted microclimate simulations in ENVI-Met 3.1 to evaluate the impact of vegetation in lowering temperatures during an extreme heat event in an urban core neighborhood park in Phoenix, Arizona. We predicted air and surface temperatures under two different vegetation regimes: existing conditions representative of Phoenix urban core neighborhoods, and a proposed scenario informed by principles of landscape design and architecture and Urban Heat Island mitigation strategies. We found significant potential air and surface temperature reductions between representative and proposed vegetation scenarios: 1) a Park Cool Island effect that extended to non-vegetated surfaces; 2) a net cooling of air underneath or around canopied vegetation ranging from 0.9 °C to 1.9 °C during the warmest time of the day; and 3) potential reductions in surface temperatures from 0.8 °C to 8.4 °C in areas underneath or around vegetation.Corresponding Author: Juan Declet-Barreto Arizona State Univeristy [email protected]

Perspectives of the River Plate around the time of Rosas : an analysis based upon the personal correspondence, private memoirs and published accounts of British settlers, as well as works by creole authors

This thesis draws inspiration from the emergence of cultural studies as an academic pursuit, in addition to the current renewal of interest in the relationship between literary works and their socio-cultural milieux, to bring together an assortment of textual traces pertaining to the River Plate around the era of Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires and de facto dictator of Argentina for most of the period 1829-1852. The main texts analysed range from private documents relating to two Scottish settler families, through accounts published by British citizens with first-hand knowledge of the region (Un inglés, Cinco años en Buenos Aires and Beaumont, Travels in Buenos Ayres and the Adjacent Provinces), to three influential pieces of early Argentinian literature (Echeverria's El matadero, Mármol's Amalia and Sarmiento's Facundo). One justification of this apparently eclectic approach lies in the prominence accorded to the incomer in the thought of liberal Platine intellectuals, a concern evinced in their literary production. The methodology involves examining the representation of certain fundamental topics across this range of written artefacts, observing frequent points of thematic convergence amongst the various texts. In this fashion, I construct an image of the River Plate region around the Rosas period, whilst also appraising the degree to which early British settlers matched the idealized notion of the immigrant present in liberal creole writings. The study is divided into four main chapters, supplemented by an introduction, conclusion and appendix. The first chapter summarizes the historical context of the young Platine republics; the second deals with the themes of society, community and family, the third focuses upon religion; the fourth considers perspectives of politics, dictatorship and civil war. The appendix consists of an unpublished settler autobiography, a remarkable account of the tribulations faced on a daily basis in the developing Argentina

Photograph of a view of the ruined corridor (or arcade?) at Mission San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California, 1885. Arches of the dilapidated arcade form a square around the quadrangle (at right). Wild grass, flowers, and fallen adobe debris cover the ground.; "Mission San Juan Capistrano was the 7th Mission when it was founded by Father Serra in 1776. Mission San Juan Capistrano is famous for its Swallows. A Swallow is a type of bird which lives in 'houses' made of mud on cliffs, under eaves, and other such overhangs. It is said that the Swallows return to their homes at the Mission every year on March 19th." -- unknown author

PhDMy thesis is intended to throw new light on the biography of the late-fifteenth-century writer Juan de Flores and to elucidate various aspects of his role in the development of the Spanish sentimental romance. To this end, I have prepared a critical edition of his romance La hiatQri. a sie Gr i. Bel y Mirak-elle (ca. 1480) in the three distinct versions in which it is known to have circulated: (1) an original text (preserved in MS 5-3-20, Biblioteca Colombina, Seville, fos. 69r-86r), (2) a revised version (preserved in MS 940, Biblioteca Trivulziana, Milan, fos. 1r-76v), and (3) a second revision, probably anonymous (preserved in the eight extant printed editions, which range in date from ca. 1495 to 1562). The edition contains a full corpus of variants for the printed witnesses, along with linguistic, exegetical and textual notes. Accompanying this edition is a textual study (Chapter 3) in which I establish the relationship to one another of the surviving witnesses and discuss in detail the work's genesis. The remaining chapters concern the attribution to Flores of two works hitherto regarded as anonymous. In Chapter 1, I argue that the known as La ==na-WQn da la zel a GTaniBla is modelled on GI, 1, Bgl y Mirabelle, and I adduce stylistic and other circumstantial evidence to show that Flores is probably -2- its author. Employing a similar methodology, I demonstrate in Chapter 2 that Flores can be identified as a royal chronicler to the Catholic Monarchs and author of the GjQai-Qa i. nQQIp1at de 14a Ray! aa Qat4j -Q4a" Drawing on information in the chronicle, I provide a plausible reconstruction of his life at the ducal court of Alba and illustrate the importance of his historiographic work for our understanding of his fictional output. This thesis provides a revaluation of Juan de Flores as a far more prolific, versatile and influential author than has previously been recognized

Photograph a view of the large courtyard at Mission San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, ca.1900. Rocks and wild grass sparsely cover the squarish courtyard. An arcade forms a square perimeter around the courtyard. The dilapidated mission buildings stand beyond the arcades. Much of the roof structure of the arcade has deteriorated or is non-existent. "Father Junipero Serra founded Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, which is known as the Jewel of the Missions. It is renowned for its beautiful courtyard gardens and legendary 'Return of the Swallows' on March 19 of each year." -- unknown author
