Teaching rhetoric in primary school – towards modernization of society with classical techniques and practices

Author Janja Zmavc in the chapter Teaching rhetoric in primary school – towards modernization of society with classical techniques and practices presents the characteristics of teaching rhetoric as a compulsory elective subject in the ninth grade of elementary schools in Slovenia. It represents a unique education feature, since in other European educational systems (as well as elsewhere in the world) at elementary level stakeholders are not familiar with an independent subject where pupils could systematically learn the principles of successful public persuasion. After a brief presentation of the circumstances surrounding the placement of the subject of rhetoric in the Slovenian elementary school curriculum, the author outlines its characteristics and presents some particularities of teaching this skill from 1999 to the present day. The main focus in the second part of this paper is the presentation of partial results of the project Developing of theoretical bases and practical guidelines for teaching rhetoric in primary and secondary schools which has been conducted at the Educational Research Institute Slovenia from 2018. The author demonstrate the main (content and didactic) directions of developing a new version of the subject-curriculum for teaching rhetoric in the primary school. Thus, the author tries to show that rhetoric seen as an integral part of the elementary education does not represent an additional ballast or burden but precisely because of its unique (i. e. classical) features, it enables a critical reflection of knowledge and promotes democratic processes within the school environment, which represent one of the key elements in the development of students’ competences for effective participation in modern democratic cultures.Collection name: LIBRARY "PEDAGOGICAL THEORY AND PRACTICE" 5

Exploitation of microbial activities at low pH to enhance planetary health

Awareness is growing that human health cannot be considered in isolation but is inextricably woven with the health of the environment in which we live. It is however under-recognised that the sustainability of human activities strongly relies on preserving the equilibrium of the microbial communities living in/on/around us. Microbial metabolic activities are instrumental for production, functionalization, processing and preservation of food. For circular economy, microbial metabolism would be exploited to produce building blocks for the chemical industry, to achieve effective crop protection, agri-food waste revalorization or biofuel production, as well as in bioremediation and bioaugmentation of contaminated areas. Low pH is undoubtedly a key physical-chemical parameter that needs to be considered for exploiting the powerful microbial metabolic arsenal. Deviation from optimal pH conditions has profound effects on shaping the microbial communities responsible for carrying out essential processes. Furthermore, novel strategies to combat contaminations and infections by pathogens rely on microbial-derived acidic molecules that suppress/inhibit their growth. Herein, we present the state-of-the-art of the knowledge on the impact of acidic pH in many applied areas and how this knowledge can guide us to use the immense arsenal of microbial metabolic activities for their more impactful exploitation in a Planetary Health perspective.Published version: [https://technorep.tmf.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/7347]This is the peer-reviewed version of the following article: Atasoy Merve, Álvarez Ordóñez Avelino, Cenian Adam, Đukić-Vuković Aleksandra, Lund Peter A, Ozogul Fatih, Trček Janja, Ziv Carmit, De Biase Daniela. Distribution of vaccine-related high-risk human papillomaviruses and their impact on the development of cervical dysplasia in women in Montenegro

    No full text
Cervical cancer (CC) is the third leading cause of death in women in Montenegro. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the causative agent of CC however, HPV genotype distribution varies across regions. This study examined the distribution and impact of vaccine-related high-risk (HR)-HPVs on the development of cervical dysplasia in Montenegrin women. A total of 187 women who had a clinical indication for cervical biopsy were enrolled. Based on histopathological findings, women were classified into 2 groups, with and without dysplasia. HR-HPV was detected by real-time PCR. Twelve HR-HPV genotypes were detected in 40.6% of cervical samples. The 7 most prevalent HR-HPVs in order of decreasing frequency were HPV 16 (39.5%), 45 (23.7%), 31 (21.0%), 33 (17.1%), 18 (6.6%), 52 (6.6%), and 58 (6.6%), all of them are targeted by nonavalent vaccine. Vaccine-related HR-HPVs had a higher prevalence (92.1%) than the other HR-HPVs detected in HR-HPV-positive samples. Among HR-HPV-positive women, HPV 16 and 33 were more common in women with dysplasia than in those without dysplasia (HPV 16: 28.9 vs 7.2%; HPV 33: 11.8 vs 3.6%). HPV 16 was the most common HR-HPV genotype in cervical samples, followed by HPV 45, 31, 33, 18, 52, and 58. HPV 16 and 33 were shown to be associated with the development of cervical dysplasia. These results indicate that prophylactic nonavalent vaccine can potentially prevent approximately 90% of HR-HPV infections and 60% of cervical dysplasia cases in Montenegrin women

    Immigrants in Slovenia: Integration Aspects

On the basis of the latest statistics, the author estimates the present share of first- and second-generation immigrants in Slovenia’s population. After examining the quantity and intensity of those public efforts in Slovenia that have been focused on unresolved problems of the immigrants’ social and cultural integration, she continues to question the equality of immigrant minorities in Slovenia, and the sufficiency of the existing programs aimed at facilitating their integration with Slovenian society at large. She explains her doubts about the general assumption that a very clear distinction should be made between the rights of the autochthonous minorities and those of the immigrant ones as far as their special protection is concerned. In the third section of this article, the author discusses the social-ethnic stratification of Slovenian society and tries to look into the psychological background of the nationality/ethnicity statistics. She presents some aspects of the immigrants’ daily experience in Slovenian social, cultural, educational and working milieu, and points to the authorities’ attitude toward them. She comments on the burning issue of the “deleted residents”, and illustrates it with the experience of one of the persons involved. The fourth section, in which the most regular symptoms of Slovenian xenophobia are presented, consists of first-hand observations and focuses on the daily human attitude of the national majority towards the immigrant minorities. Finally the author compares the nature of the specific needs of Slovenians as a “European national minority” with the needs of the immigrant minorities in Slovenia

This article explores the conditions that are required for a fully developed cultural and artistic activity (production, consumption and reception) going on within or in vital connection with the immigrant community. Drawing on the experience of Slovenian emigrant communities in other European countries, Australia, Argentina, Canada, the United States, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and the experience of the largest immigrant communities in Slovenia, that is the Bosniak-Muslim community, the Serbian, the Croatian, the Macedonian, the Montenegrin, the Albanian, and most of the Romany community, the author summarizes, from the viewpoint of literary and cultural historian, the most evident sets of factors that have been found relevant in terms of shaping those conditions in the case of the abovementioned communities. Relying on an information grid extracted from a most diverse selection of sources, the author attempts to point to some relevant aspects that have been largely neglected in the field of cultural historiography
