Young Adult Vulnerabilities in the Fiction of a Ugandan Woman Writer

    Get PDF
Questions of identity, power, autonomy and vulnerability carry a particular weight in cultures that have emerged from colonialism. Although few writers of fiction focus on the conflicts between African and European characters, a focus on power and marginalisation remains. One category in which this focus may be plainly seen is writing for and about young people. The study’s aim was to analyse young adult fiction written by a Ugandan female author, Barbara Kimenye to investigate this writing to find out how young adult vulnerability is depicted in literature. Although literature targeting young people in Uganda has flourished and though issues of limited representation have been scrutinised in literary studies, like gender discrimination, very limited attention has been accorded young adult representation in literature. This research analyses fiction written by a female author Barbara Kimenye to expand knowledge about the criticism of young adult representation in literature with particular focus on young adult vulnerability in an adult dominated world. The methodology was mainly qualitative research design, where a document analysis method was used to aid analysis and make critical appreciation of the fictional works. The study investigated the state of young adult characters in literature with special focus on their vulnerability

“Who Will Comfort Toffle?” – creating audiences for children's preferred futures

Now once upon a time, although not very long ago. And Hidden in the forest where the tall dark pine trees grow, There lived a boy called Toffle in a house that stood alone. He always felt so lonely, and one night was heard to moan; “I feel so frightened of the dark, especially tonight…….” Who Will Comfort Toffle - Tove Jansson (1960) In this tale from the Moomin Valley Toffle finds himself driven from his home by the frightening noises of the forest. All alone, and too shy, at first to approach the many Moomin characters he passes along the way, he gains confidence by helping a scared and lonely Miffle who needs help more than he does. Toffle’s quest to save Miffle from the dreadful Groke inspires him to move beyond his own fears and anxieties, and at the same time create an audience to listen to his preferred future. What would happen if Toffle were alive today, living within a community with all his worries and anxieties, his fear of the dark and the noises of the forest? Maybe Toffle refuses to go to school or becomes aggressive when asked about his fears and worries? Maybe his parents are concerned about his social isolation or potential depression? In all probability Toffle would be referred to a child psychiatrist or a therapist. He would be evaluated, assessed, diagnosed with any number of conditions and disorders, or perhaps his parents would be mandated to attend parenting classes

Papua New Guinea Primary School Technology Teachers: The Impacts of Support Materials on Their Perceptions and Practices

    No full text
This thesis explores the perceptions of technology and technology education held by six primary school teachers in Papua New Guinea, and their views of the materials developed to use as a support for teaching technology and the impacts on their perceptions and their teaching practices of technology. Based on the interpretivist paradigm, a case study approach and qualitative data collection methods were used to explore the teachers' views of technology and technology education and how the support materials influenced these perceptions and practices. One to one, semistructured interviews with the teachers, and an analysis of their planning documents were used to collect data. As part of the curriculum reforms, technology education was introduced as a new subject into primary education in PNG in 1994. However, no formal professional development was provided for helping the primary teachers implement technology education. Instead, curriculum materials were developed and distributed to teachers in 2005 as a support for their technology teaching. This thesis supports the idea that teachers need support to help them learn. It is also argues that teachers' beliefs about subject areas, teaching, their students, and curriculum materials influence how they interact with these support materials. The findings show that the support materials were very useful in enhancing the teachers' knowledge of technology and effective teaching of technology. There were changes to teachers' perceptions of technology and technological practices when they began to use the support materials. Changes included the views of technology as more than modern artefacts to include traditional technology, that technology was more than just practical. It also has a knowledge base. However, not all aspects of technology as advocated in the support materials have been taken up by these teachers. Problem-solving and design aspects have received marginal attention. Other factors were at play including subject subcultures, subject backgrounds, past hands-on experiences and ownership of personal technological artefacts. To be even more effective technology teachers, it is advocated that teacher professional development is required for Papua New Guinean primary teachers to implement the technology successfully

    No full text
This study proposes a rational basis for pre-vocational. education (PVE) teacher preparation and training in Jordan based on a thorough assessment of the teacher's role and responsibilities. Qualitative and quantitative data collection methods were employed. These included semi-structured interviews with members of the Jordanian National Teams for PVE Curriculum Development and for Supervision on PVE Curriculum Development, as well as with PVE supervisors in Jordan. Selfcompletion questionnaires were also administered to a sample of PVE teachers and educational supervisors. Asserting that design and implementation of a successful training programme should be founded on the job activities and competencies required, this study presents a job description for the PVE teacher, analyses the activities involved, and identifies the associated competencies. The study proceeds to scrutinise the components of WE teacher preparation, analyses the current delivery of PVE in Jordan, identifies some deficiencies, and considers potential corrective action. The study also discusses the necessity of vocational field experience for the PVE teacher. Current programmes of PVE teacher preparation are critically examined, shortcomings are identified, and proposals for improvement are discussed

    No full text
This thesis evaluates the experiences of a Maltese school that decided to embrace the philosophy of inclusion. It provides a synthesis of knowledge about the processes of inclusive education, derived from the experience of the main stakeholders in the school. The main research question being: “What changes does the implementation of the Social Model of Disability that focuses on abilities and skills rather than labelling and deficit have on a school population?” Specifically, the study investigated: · The practices within the school that enable inclusion. · The experience of students, students’ parents, teachers, learning support assistants (LSAs) and administrators. · Whether or not, and if so, how disabled students are participating, active members of the school. · The effect of inclusion on the school community/culture. A case study approach is used in order to evaluate this school’s process of inclusion and its ramifications on stakeholders. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used, along with a triangulation of questionnaires, focus groups, semi-structure interviews and observations. A thematic analysis supported by descriptive statistics was used within an interpretative approach of hermeneutic phenomenology. This research contributes theory to the following three areas in: 1. Offering a different model for an inclusive school. 2. The use of innovative structures in school management. 3. The changes brought about by valuing the education of disabled students. The findings show a general positive attitude towards inclusive education and suggest that inclusive education heightens the awareness of each interrelated aspect of the school as a community, challenges stereotypes, and promotes contextually relevant research. The work concludes with a series of possible future directions for research and a critical reflection that is needed to help educators achieve progress towards philosophical and practical ideals of a socially and academically just education

This paper´s objective is to evaluate and compare the main microeconomic determinants of poverty in Venezuela and Colombia for the 2010-2014 period. Using information from Household Surveys by Sampling and the Great Integrated Household Survey, poverty level estimations are obtained through a binomial logit model using the maximum likelihood method. Results show similarities in the poverty determinants for both countries. These results evidence that the probability of being poor is higher in Venezuela than in Colombia. In particular, for 2014 the probabilities are close to one, what might reveal the generalized impoverishment in the Venezuelan population, while in Colombia the probability of being poor is less, which can be a stability indicator of the economic growth witnessed in the last years.O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar e comparar os principais determinantes microeconómicos da pobreza na Venezuela e na Colômbia para o período 2010-2014.
