    Background and Objective: Brain stroke (caused by interrupted blood supply to the brain) is one of the most common causes of disability and is the second highest cause of death in the world. Early diagnosis and treatment raises the chance of surviving a stroke, and can result in little or no disability. Treatment is based on the type of stroke and its primary cause; for ischaemic stroke (IS), medication or surgery or both can be recommended, whereas, for haemorrhagic stroke (HS, also known as intracerebral hemorrhage), surgery is recommended. However, there are scarcity of clinical markers which can differentiate IS from HS and further can provide information about severity of cerebral ischemia, endothelial injury, blood–brain barrier disruption, atherosclerosis, thrombus formation, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Metabolomics is a promising approach for identification of metabolic biomarkers and alterations associated with the diseased biology The present study is an effort to identify the diagnostic panel of serum metabolic profiles to differentiate between IS and HS patients and further could help predicting the severity of the cerebral ischemia. Methods: Blood serum samples were collected from suspected brain stroke patients at hospital admission within 6 hours after onset. The serum samples of patients clinically confirmed for IS and HS were only analysed using 800 MHz NMR spectroscopy. For comparative evaluation, the serum samples from 60 age and sex matched normal control (NC) subjects were also obtained for NMR analysis. The partial least square-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to confirm the serum metabolic disparity between the study groups and metabolic features of discriminatory relevance were identified making composite use of mean decrease accuracy (MDA) score values estimated for metabolic features employing machine learning random forest (RF) classification analysis. The diagnostic potential of discriminatory metabolites were finally evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: The serum metabolic profiles of total 107 brain stroke patients (48 IS and 60 HS) were measured and compared with those of 60 age and sex matched normal control (NC) subjects. Compared to NC, the serum levels of various amino acids (histidine, glutamine, threonine, alanine, glycine, dimethylglycine, pyruvate, etc.) were found to be decreased in both HS and IS patients, whereas those of creatine, mannitol, mannose, malonate and organic acids (such as acetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxy-isobutyrate) were found to be increased in the sera of brain stroke patients. However, the area under ROC (AUROC) curve values for majority of metabolic features found to be less than 0.8 for the discrimination between IS and HS suggesting that circulatory metabolic features lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions: The study provided primary evidence that various circulatory metabolites (including histidine, glutamine, and alanine) exhibited strong diagnostic potential for distinguishing brain stroke condition from NC subject, however, poor diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing IS from HS. Nevertheless, these metabolic changes can be used to assess the severity of brain stroke condition and monitoring patient response to treatment in emergency settings.The identified NMR based serum metabolic changes can be used to assess the disease severity and monitoring patient response to treatment in emergency settings

    A Unified Shell model for Buoyancy-Driven Turbulence

    We construct a unified shell model for stably stratified and convective turbulence. Shell model simulation of stably stratified flow in turbulent regime exhibit Bolgiano-Obukhbov (BO) scaling in which the kinetic energy spectrum varies as k11/5k^{-11/5}. However, simulation of convective turbulence shows Kolmogorov's spectrum. These results are consistent with the direct numerical simulations of Kumar {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 023016 (2014)]. We also observe a dual scaling (k11/5k^{-11/5} and k5/3k^{-5/3}) for a limited range of parameters in stably stratified flow

    Residue Management and Nutrient Stoichiometry Control Greenhouse Gas and Global Warming Potential Responses in Alfisols

    Although crop residue returns are extensively practiced in agriculture, large uncertainties remain about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and global warming potential (GWP) responses to residue return (RR) rates under different residue placements and nutrient supplements. We conducted a laboratory mesocosm experiment in Alfisol in central India to investigate the responses of soil GHG emissions (CO2, N2O, and CH4) and the global warming potential to four wheat RR rates (R0: no residue; R5: 5 Mg/ha; R10: 10 Mg/ha; R15: 15 Mg/ha) and two placements (surface [Rsur] and incorporated [Rinc]) under three nutrient supplement levels (NSLs) (NS0: no nutrients, NS1: nutrients (N and P) added to balance the stoichiometry of C:N:P to achieve 30% humification in RR at 5 t/ha, NS2: 3 × NS1). The results demonstrated a significant (p R5 (3.8) > R15 (2.6) > R0 (1.6). Our results demonstrated a significant linear response of total GWP to RR rates R15 > R10 > R5 > R0, ranging from 201.4 to 1563.6 mg CO2 eq kg−1 soil.     Optimizing residue return with soil moisture and nutrient stoichiometry reduced greenhouse gas fluxes in Alfisols

    Optimum soil moisture and high crop residue return (RR) can increase the active pool of soil organic carbon and nitrogen, thus modulating the magnitude of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. To determine the effect of soil moisture on the threshold level of RR for the wheat production system, we analyzed the relationship between GHG fluxes and RR at four levels, namely 0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha−1 (R0, R5, R10, and R15) under two soil moisture content (80% FC and 100% FC) and three levels of nutrient management (NS0: no nutrient; NS1, NS2= 3x NS1). Nutrient input (N and P) in NS1 balanced the residue C/nutrient stoichiometry to achieve 30% stabilization of the residue C input in RR (R5). All RR treatments (cf. R0) were found to significantly reduce N2O emission in moderate soil moisture content (80% FC) by 22–56% across nutrient management due to enhanced soil C mineralization, microbial biomass carbon, and N immobilization. However, averaged across nutrient management, a linear increase in N2O emission was observed with increasing RR under 100% FC soil moisture. A significant decrease in CH4 emission by ca. 46% in most RR treatments was observed in 100% FC compared with the R0. The N2O emission was negatively correlated (p= 0.8) to management variables (RR rate, nitrogen (N) input rate, soil moisture, and nutrient stoichiometry of C: N) and post-incubation soil properties (SMBC and NO3-N) in Alfisols. Network representativeness and constituency can show how well conditions at those locations represent conditions elsewhere within a larger area containing the network and can be used to help scale-up results over larger regions. Representativeness: Euclidean distance between two sites plotted in multivariate environmental space can be used as an inverse measure of multivariate similarity to quantify representativeness. Close sites in environmental space have a similar combination of environmental factors, and therefore are highly representative of each other.     Dilip Kumar has been praised for his sublime dialog delivery, for his restrained gestures, and for his measured and controlled underplay of emotions in tragic stories as well as in light-hearted comedies. His debut in 1944 with Jwar Bhata (Ebb and Tide) met with less-than-flattering reviews. So did the next three films until his 1948 film, Jugnu (Firefly), which brought him recognition and success. Unlike his contemporaries such as Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, who propelled their careers by launching their own production companies, Dilip Kumar relied on his talent, his unique approach to characterization, and his immersion in the projects he undertook. In the course of his career that spanned six decades, Kumar made only 62 films. However, his work is a textbook for other actors that followed. Not only did he bring respectability to a profession that had been shunned by the upper classes in India as a profession for “pimps and prostitutes,” but he also elevated film-acting and filmmaking to an academic discipline, making him worthy of the title ‘Professor Emeritus of Acting’. Rooted in the theoretical framework of Howard S. Becker’s work on the “production of culture” and “doing things together,” this paper discusses Kumar’s approach to acting, character development, and the level of his involvement and commitment to each of his projects. The author of this article argues that more than the creative control as a producer or a director, it is the artistic involvement and commitment of the main actors that shape great works of art in cinema.
