Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Muhammad Aditya Ramadhan. 2021. Muhammad Aditya Ramadhan. 2021. The Screening of Resistance againts Root Knot Nematode in Rice Varieties (Oryza sativa L.). Supervised by Lisnawita and Syahrial Oemry. Root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.) is a cosmopolite nematode that has a wide host range, infecting rice during the seedling and vegetative growth phase. Using resistant varieties is an alternative to reduce losses due to this nematode infection. This study aims to examined the resistance to root knot nematode in rice varieties. This research was conducted at the Screen House, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, from February 2020 to April 2020 using five rice varieties, namely Inpari 17 (V1), Inpago 9 (V2),Inpari 8 (V3), Inpari 24 (V4), and Inpari Sidenuk (V5). The results showed that there were three criteria for plant resistance, namely susceptible, moderately susceptible, and moderately resistant. The Inpari 17 and Inpago 9 varieties were categorized as susceptible, the Inpari 9 and Inpari Sidenuk were categorized as moderately susceptible, and the Inpari 24 were categorized as moderately resistant.63 HalamanSkripsi Sarjan

Since its emergence, ESP along with the development of important aspects in human’s lives including economics, science and technology has developed valuable knowledge for language teaching enterprise. Similarly, in Indonesia ESP has also answered the demand for specific English used in the vocational and professional field by establishing its place in the vocational high school level curriculum as well as higher education level curriculum. Yet, many ESP teachers and curriculum designers often neglect the learners’ specific needs by excluding needs analysis from ESP plans as well as abandoning its prospective contribution to day to day teaching and learning process such as teaching methodology and material being used. Thus, by inviting four groups of stakeholders from four non-educational engineering study programs at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, this study hoped to be able to draw a picture of English needs as perceived by the target engineering community. With the employment of questionnaire and interview this study were able to collect several information regarding target engineering community’s present situation and target situation covering; target learners’ objective information, expected purposes of the course, available resources, prospective use of the language, and present English for Engineering classroom. These data findings were further used as series suggestions in designing English for Engineering syllabus intended for the mentioned setting

Translation has been widely recognized as a way to connect cultures among the world through literary works. However, translating literary works is not an easy task, especially poetry. This research entitled “McGlynn versus Aveling: A Comparison of Translation Strategies Used in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Poems” aims to analyse strategies of translating poetry proposed by Andre Lefevere, and how they can impact the translation results of five poems by two different translators: John McGlynn and Harry Aveling. The poems were collected from three books: Black Magic Rain, Contemporary Indonesian Poetry, and Before Dawn. A descriptive analysis method was employed in this study alongside a little approach of a case study. The findings showed that the most frequent strategy used by both translators was Literal Translation. Strategies used by both translators also affect the lexical thematic, visual, and rhythmic acoustic dimension of the poems indirectly.;--

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
