Grigore Chiper. Cărţile începuturilor [Articol]
Being part of a larger study, this article examines the way in which Grigore Chiper’s poetics is constituted in his first two books Abia tangibilul and Aici, în falset. The author has accredited two ways of manifesting modernity in poetry: notation poetry and fragmentaristic poetry, in the Romanian lyrics in Bessarabia of the 1980 s
GRIGORE VIERU ŞI LUCIAN BLAGA: PO(I)ETICA DORULUI, SACRULUI, ABISALULUI
GRIGORE VIERU AND LUCIAN BLAGA: THE POETIC OF LONGING, SACRED, ABYSSALThe author achieves a comparison between the poetry and poetic art of Lucian Blaga, as well as in the case of Grigore Vieru. It is pointed out some similarities regarding the theme and motive, like destiny, „perpetuity that was born in the village”, love as complex state (longing), dialogue with God, the spring and the dwell, the dream and the sleep, the light and the dark. The influence of Blaga is analyzed at stylistic as well as at the visionary levels. Grigore Vieru descends in the underground area of the human spirit, giving an expression to the abyssal, a term on which Blaga meditates in his philosophical masterpiece (especially in The Trilogy of culture). The author sees a deep impression of the Blaga model on Grigore Vieru’s aphorisms, gathered under the title Motion in infinity. The lyrical and philosophical speech is combined in an organic way, forming the lyrosophy.</p

The aim of this paper is to present the results obtained from the scientific investigations carried out to establish the materials and methods used by the painter for the accomplishment of the religious art work, both for conservation and restoration purposes, as well as to enrich the knowledge about the work of this particular author and about the Transylvanian iconography in general. The analyses were performed by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy and destructive and nondestructive Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.</p
The Egyptian Dialect for a Democratic Form of Literature: Considerations for a Modern Language Policy
This paper compares two different ways of approaching literature and language in Egypt. In particular, I concentrate on the use of colloquial Egyptian in literature, and more specifically in prose. I look at the ideas of Ṭaha Ḥusayn on Egyptian dialect and juxtaposes them with those of intellectuals and writers contemporary to Ḥusayn such as Salama Musa and Muṣṭafa Mušarrafatu, the first Egyptian author to write a novel entirely in patois. In a radio interview, Nagib Maḥfuẓ described dialect as a disease affecting his fellow countrymen and preventing them from attaining social as well as technical progress. In Ṭaha Ḥusayn’s opinion, dialect is unworthy of being called a language and unfit to fulfil the aims of intellectual life. On the other hand, intellectuals like Salama Musa maintain that the use of dialect, even as an official language, and a linguistic reform are the most important prerequisites for the progress of Egypt. Extremely interesting, moreover, is Musa’s idea that the use of colloquial language in literature would give birth to a literature for everybody, that is a popular or democratic literature
Tune In: The Power of Sound in Shaping Trailer Engagement
Film trailers serve as crucial promotional tools, yet the function of music in shaping viewer engagement within trailers remains an under-explored area, particularly in the context of self-selected soundtracks. Whilst prior studies have demonstrated that music enhances mood and emotional resonance in visual media, there is a lack of research regarding the impact of different soundtrack conditions on psychological engagement and behavioral intentions. This thesis addresses this gap by examining if music fit, character identification, narrative immersion, and emotional responses are influenced by soundtrack conditions, and if these in turn predict behavioral intentions such as the intention to watch or recommend the film. Moreover, it explores the potential mediating role of nostalgia in the relationship between emotional responses and behavioral intentions, thus enhancing the comprehension of how emotion leads to action. The main research question is: To what extent do different soundtrack conditions influence audience engagement with film trailers? To explore this an experimental design was conducted in which 115 participants were randomly assigned one of the three music conditions: original soundtrack, no music, and self-selected music, while watching the trailer of Past Lives (2023). Participants then completed a questionnaire measuring music fit, character identification, narrative immersion, emotional responses, nostalgia and behavioral intentions, using validated and adapted self-report scales. The data were analyzed through t-tests, ANOVA analyses, multiple linear regression tests, and mediation PROCESS tests. Results revealed that the music condition significantly influenced character identification, narrative immersion, and emotional responses, with self-selected music outperforming the other no music condition, but not the original soundtrack. Nostalgia was found to partially mediate the relationship between emotional responses and behavioral intentions. Narrative immersion and emotional responses predicted behavioral intentions, while music fit and character identification didn't. These findings demonstrate how sound affects not only the audience engagement but downstream behavior

Customizing Nutrients: Vitamin D and Iron Deficiencies in Overweight and Obese Children—Insights from a Romanian Study
Background: Childhood obesity is a public health issue worldwide, recognized as a complex condition associated with multiple deficiencies in nutrients, such as vitamin D deficiency, iron-deficiency anemia, or abnormalities in serum calcium or phosphorus levels, despite an excess caloric intake. Objective: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of these deficiencies in overweight/obese children and to assess the correlation between vitamin D/serum iron levels and body mass index (BMI). Methods: The observational study was conducted on 69 Romanian overweight and obese children, aged 2 to 17, admitted to the Pediatrics Department of “Grigore Alexandrescu” Hospital in Bucharest over a 15-month period. The age- and gender-specific BMI percentiles were used to classify participants into three groups: overweight (≥85th and <95th BMI percentile), obese (≥95th BMI percentile), and severely obese (>120% of 95th BMI percentile). Data analysis focused on identifying the need for screening and targeted treatment in this pediatric population. Results: Hypovitaminosis D (defined as a serum level of 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL) prevalence was significantly higher in the severe obesity category (71.5%) compared to the obesity (69%) and overweight (61.5%) groups. Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia were both more prevalent in overweight children, with rates of 50% and 38.5%, respectively. Negative moderate correlations were found both between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and children’s age (r = −0.444, p-value < 0.0001), as well as between serum 25(OH)D levels and BMI (r = −0.31, p = 0.015), with no statistically significant correlation between serum iron level and BMI in this cohort (r = −0.02, p > 0.05). Conclusions: Severe obesity could be regarded as an associated factor for vitamin D insufficiency as this is highly prevalent in severely obese children, with 25(OH)D levels decreasing with the increase in BMI. Overweight children demonstrated an increased prevalence of iron deficiency in the overweight category, suggesting that the adipose tissue contributes to chronic inflammation, disrupting iron homeostasis. Given the high prevalence of nutritional deficiencies in this population, implementing systematic screening and treatment programs would be beneficial to prevent long-term adverse outcomes

Segmentation and registration of molecular components in 3-dimensional density maps from cryo-electron microscopy
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2010.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-93).Cryo-electron microscopy is a method that produces 3D density maps of macromolecular complexes. Segmentation and registration methods are heavily used to extract structural information from such density maps. Segmentation aims to identify regions in a density map corresponding to individual molecular components, so as to allow us to understand their complex arrangements and the relation of these arrangements to the function of the complex. Currently used segmentation methods rely to a large degree upon user interaction and thus are tedious and yield subjective results. We present a multi-scale segmentation method requiring very little interaction and guidance from the user. The segmentation accuracy of this method is quantified for simulated density maps, using a shape-based metric. The method is applied to several density maps of various sizes and complexity, producing accurate results. Registration of molecular structures with density maps helps to relate the vast structural information from X-ray crystallography with the structural information contained in cryo-electron microscopy density maps. The most reliable registration methods to date depend on exhaustive search, which is time-intensive and scales poorly with map and structure size. Two methods are presented that achieve direct registration of structures with density maps, based on the alignment of the structures to segmented regions.(cont.) The registrations are refined using a gradient-based method, which locally optimizes the density cross-correlation score. A search algorithm is presented for automatically finding groups of regions that produce correct registrations. The accuracy of these registration methods is measured using simulated density maps, and then the methods are used to register structures of individual proteins and subunits with density maps obtained by cryo-electron microscopy.by Grigore D. \u3ci\u3eFrom Economic Crisis to Reform: IMF Programs in Latin America and Eastern Europe\u3c/i\u3e by Grigore Pop-Eleches (Book Review)
Grigore Pop-Eleches’s book on the interaction of international and domestic determinants of IMF-style reforms in developing countries makes a significant contribution to international and comparative political economy literature. His effort to capture the dynamics of the contentious and complex relationship between the IMF and developing countries/emerging markets inLatin AmericaandEastern Europerepresents mid-range theorizing at its best. The author combines insights from international and comparative political economy literatures to pursue complementary questions. From the international effect perspective: what role do economic crises play in the initiation and implementation of IMF-backed economic reform? Is the IMF impartial in its policy and financial support for countries in need? In what ways do IMF lending patterns reflect the changing demands of international financial markets, as well as the shifting priorities of advanced industrialized democracies (p.2)
