Underneath the Observational Snapshot: Looking For Sense and Meaning Behind the First Impressions of a Learning Interaction
No full textEducation practitioners, including Ofsted inspectors and Teacher Educators, try to make sense of behaviour in the classroom by observing the interaction of teachers and learners. They make judgements about what is good teaching, what is bad learner behaviour and what are inclusive and effective learning experiences. This article argues that such observations are inadequate for assessing and evaluating learning behaviour and insufficient to enable teachers to develop their own personalised teaching and learning strategies and their confidence as professional teachers. The article was written in response to examples of Further Education (FE) teachers describing the college classroom as a war zone and a battlefield (Lebor, 2013). The author argues that such metaphors reinforce the notion that teachers and learners are situated at opposing sides of an education institution with differing interests. They also ignore the position of the teacher as being a learner too. The author advocates using an existentialist approach to understanding and reflecting on the learning process. She models strategies she has used herself to attempt to step outside the conventional paradigm of learning in college and create a new framework for reflecting on what is good behaviour from a teacher and good behaviour from a learner
Die Effizienz von Zuteilungsmechanismen bei Flächenzertifikaten zwischen Versteigerung und Grandfathering – experimentelle Evidenz

Die Einführung handelbarer Flächenzertifikate wird als Regulierungsinstrument zur Reduktion des Flächenverbrauchs in Deutschland diskutiert. Bislang fehlen jedoch empirische Studien zur Untersuchung der Wohlfahrts- und Umverteilungswirkung eines solchen cap & trade Systems. Insbesondere die Frage nach der Effizienz verschiedener Mechanismen der Primärallokation von Zertifikaten ist politisch relevant, aber bisher nicht untersucht. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert daher anhand eines ökonomischen Laborexperiments, das ein Zertifikatsystem zur Flächenverbrauchsreduktion simuliert, die Auswirkungen von drei Primärallokationsmechanismen: einer vollständigen Gratiszuteilung, einer ausschließlichen Versteigerung und einer hälftigen Aufteilung von Gratiszuteilung und Versteigerung. Es zeigt sich, dass ein Auktionsmechanismus die Effizienz und Stabilität des Zertifikatsystems senkt. Zertifikatpreise weisen eine höhere Volatilität auf und es bestehen stärker als durch die Theorie zu erwartende Umverteilungseffekte zu Gunsten des Auktionators. Persistente Preisunterschiede zwischen Auktion und innerkommunalem Handel verhindern eine effiziente Allokation der Zertifikate. Während das Zertifikatsystem insgesamt bei einer Gratiszuteilung einen hohen Effizienzgrad erreicht, führt ein Auktionsmechanismus zu Ineffizienzen, Unsicherheit und starken Umverteilungswirkungen. Aus wirtschaftspolitischer Sicht unterstützen diese Ergebnisse eine Gratis-Zuteilung innerhalb eines Systems handelbarer Flächenzertifikate.</jats:p
Experimental evidence on the resilience of a cap & trade system for land use in Germany
No full textThe German government has committed to substantially limiting future land consumption. Among the most prominently discussed policy instruments is the implementation of a cap & trade system for land consumption, in which a limited amount of certificates is allocated to and traded by municipalities. Since these certificates would be a prerequisite for conducting building projects, this system is expected to reduce urban sprawl and foster the efficient allocation of land consumption projects. While previous empirical studies have supported these projections, the potential fragility of a cap & trade system in the case of macroeconomic shocks has not been considered. In three laboratory experiments, we simulate the impact of economic and budgetary crises within a cap & trade scheme for land consumption. We find that a market-based system succeeds in compensating macroeconomic disturbances with only minor welfare losses. Certificate prices in auctions and trading are somewhat more volatile before shocks, yet normalize afterwards. Trading volumes and the specifics of project realizations remain largely unaffected. Unrelated to the macroeconomic shocks, auction and market prices persistently diverge, leading to income redistributions to the state. Overall, our evidence supports the introduction of a market-based certificate scheme to reduce land consumption in Germany due to its resilience against potential shocks

Lågenergihus i Ralph Erskines anda : Gästrike Hammarby
No full textMed detta examensarbete är tre års studier vid Byggnadsingenjörprogrammet med inriktning mot arkitektur och miljöanalys vid Högskolan i Gävle fullbordade. Tyngdpunkten under arbetet läggs på arkitekturutformningen samt energihushållningen och därmed presenteras examensarbetet i två huvudkapitel, Arkitektur och Energi. Uppdragsgivaren Mats Mattson, en eldsjäl i Gästrike Hammarby, har under lång tid haft funderingar på att uppföra ett lågenergihus i den gamla bruksorten Gästrike Hammarby. Mattsson tror på en levande landsbygd och förhoppningarna är att ett naturnära boende ska locka yngre generationer till att bosätta sig i Gästrike Hammarby. På uppdrag ska ett lågenergihus projekteras och genom detta skapas ett attraktivt boende i en vacker miljö, som bidrar till den framtida utvecklingen av denna bruksidyll. En av utmaningarna var att detta hus skulle passa in i den redan befintliga miljön. Den arkitektoniska omgivningen är till stor del skapad av den världsberömda arkitekten Ralph Erskine. Med detta som bakgrund var det av största vikt att projekthuset får en touch á la Erskine, utan att vara ett plagiat. Hans formspråk på de ritade husen i brukssamhället, men även de internationellt ritade byggnaderna analyseras för att lyfta fram vissa av hans arkitektoniska idéer som ska knytas an till projekthuset på bästa sätt. Den andra utmaningen var att ur energisynpunkt uppfylla de specifika kraven som finns samt uppdragsgivarens önskemål. Att huset skulle vara miljöanpassat är en självklarhet och genom sunda materialval uppfylla termen ett hållbart byggande. Flera överväganden gjordes vid valet av klimatskärmens konstruktion och installationer som värme- och ventilationssystem. Parallellt som konstruktionen utformades genom olika materialval granskades materialvalen i SundaHus databas, för bedömning av yttre miljöpåverkan. Resultat blev ett attraktivt och funktionellt boende där byggnaden uppfyller dagens normer och regler. Arbetet visar hur dagens moderna arkitektur kan knytas samman med Ralph Erskines formspråk. Med simuleringsprogrammet BV2 utfördes en beräkning av byggnadens specifika energianvändning som ligger till grund för fastställande av byggnadens köpta energibehov. Resultatet kom att bli 46 kWh/m2 år köpt energi, vilket hamnar även under uppdragsgivarens önskemål. Nyckelord: Arkitektur, Ralph Erskine, Lågenergihus, Gästrike Hammarb
"Let 'em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open": speculation and consumption in Ralph Ellison's invisible man
No full textIn Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the themes of history, race, and abjection are explored through the experiences of the novel’s unnamed protagonist. To better understand the novel’s complexities, I turn to Frantz Fanon’s work on the origins of white racialized violence and how it attaches itself to black(ened) flesh. Fanon argues that this violence becomes a mode of consumption for the masses, turning blackness into a spectacle meant to be consumed by white audiences. I use Fanon’s ideas to frame the protagonist’s experiences in the novel as moments of intense exteriority that challenge his ontology. I then turn to Black abjection as a way for Black flesh to resist the dominant heteronormative gaze. I define Black abjection as a nebulous contradiction that allows Black flesh to resist even while performing for the dominant gaze. The essay concludes with a meditation on the possibilities for blackness to thrive in a liminal space. Ellison's famous line, “Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?” exemplifies the potential for blackness to resist dominant structures and thrive in a space outside of them. I argue that Invisible Man problematizes our understanding of the history and origin of black masculine flesh, exposes how the dominant gaze seeks to consume and erase blackness, and highlights the potential for resistance and a thriving blackness that exists outside of dominant racist structures of consumption.M.
