    Rahul Jain’s Reimagined Velvet Drawloom

    Indian textile traditions are exemplars of Deep Local, firmly rooted in geography and culture. Even family names denote specific occupations; Ansari are weavers; Chippa, block-print dyers; Khatri, bandhani dyers. In the 1980s, two exhibitions introduced me to Indian textiles. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry’s show, “India Festival of Science included artisans demonstrating their specialties. Ansar Ahmed Ansari, a Varanasi silk brocade weaver, wove sari fabric on a Jacquard loom. After shadowing him for several days, he offered his business card and invited me to visit. In New York at the Met, the India Art and Culture exhibition had a spectacular Mughal tent richly embroidered metallic gold on crimson velvet. It was sublime, soft architecture beckoning repose. The ultimate lure was learning that Rahul Jain, the renowned textile historian and designer, had fabricated a drawloom to weave velvet. Rahul worked with one Ansari family for more than two years to actualize his dream of reproducing Mughal velvets. In January 2016, I met him and his fabulous loom. It resided in the weaver’s home in the small village Colapur, 15 kilometers east of Varanasi. The loom was a traditional Indian drawloom, complete jala system for weaving Banarasi brocades. An elaborate surrounding apparatus held the separately tensioned velvet piles. The weaving process took the family: the masterweaver; his brother controlling the pattern leashes; his wife widening the sheds; his father troubleshooting the piles. The coincidences illuminated Pan Global. When I showed Sibras Chandra Supakar, Rahul’s colleague, the business card I had kept, he told me he knew the weaver and his father had selected him. When talking with Abbas Khan, Rahul’s protégé, I discovered that his mother worked on the Met exhibition and knew the permanent home for the tent.     A Khatri-Rao product tensor network for efficient symmetric MIMO Volterra identification

    The identification of symmetric tensor network MIMO Volterra models has been studied earlier via the computation of a Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse in tensor network form. The current state of the art requires the construction of a tensor network of a repeated Khatri-Rao product of a matrix with itself. This construction has a computational complexity that is dominated by one singular value decomposition (SVD) of an RI × IN matrix, where N is the number of measurements, I depends linearly on the number of inputs and input lags and R is the maximal tensor network rank. In this article, we prove an alternative method for constructing this tensor network without any computation whatsoever. The pseudoinverse can then be computed through an orthogonalization of the newly proposed tensor network. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm allows for the recursive identification of symmetric Volterra models of increasing degree D, which reduces the computation to one SVD of a RI × N matrix per step. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate how the proposed algorithm enables up to ten times faster identification of symmetric tensor network MIMO Volterra systems.Team Kim Batselie

    Design and assessment of solar PV plant for girls hostel (GARGI) of MNIT University, Jaipur city: A case study

    AbstractIn this paper designing and assessment of a solar PV plant for meeting the energy demand of girl’s hostel at MNIT University Jaipur city was analyzed. A solar PV plant was designed with its financial and environmental assessment considering recent market prices. All the aspects related to a solar PV plant were considered for financial feasibility of PV plant near this location. The different financial parameters which affect the financial feasibility of PV plant were considered i.e. discount rate, effective discount rate, rate of escalation of electricity cost, salvage value of the plant etc. The environmental aspect related with the energy generated with PV plant i.e. reduction in carbon emission and carbon credits earned was also considered. Result obtained with the assessment of the proposed plant with different discount rate and current rate of inflation shows that the max IRR 6.85% and NPV of 1,430,834wasobtainedwithadiscountrateof81,430,834 was obtained with a discount rate of 8% and an inflation rate of 7.23% when no land cost considered and if land cost was considered the maximum IRR was 1.96% and NPV of 630,833. Minimum discounted payback of the plant will be 13.4 years if inflation was considered

    From Forests to Food Security: Pathways in Nepal’s Community Forestry

    There is an increasing recognition of the contribution of forests to food security of poor and marginalized people. However, empirical findings remain limited on how forests contribute to food security. Drawing on four case studies of community forestry in Nepal, this paper discusses pathways through which forests are contributing to food security needs of local communities. The evidence presented here was gathered through 4 years of action research and draws insights from the past 40 years of Nepal’s community forestry practice, which is often regarded as a successful case of conservation and development. It is shown that there are four distinct pathways through which community forests contribute to food security as a source of: (1) income and employment; (2) inputs to increase food production; (3) directly for food; and (4) renewable energy for cooking. Despite emerging pathways linking forest management to food systems at the local level, forestry policies and institutions have neither explicitly recognized nor strengthened the linkage between forest and food security. The paper highlights that there is a need for a fundamental shift in thinking from the conventional notion of ‘forests for soil conservation’ to ‘sustainable forest management for food security’.Rahul Karki, Krishna K. Deltocephalus fuscovarius Distant. Syn. nov. Material examined. Pakistan: 213, 4 Ƥ, Sindh Prov., Tando Jam, 7.xi.07. India: several specimens from throughout India and Sri Lanka, including the syntypeƤ of Xestocephalus dissimilis and 2 Ƥ syntypes of Deltocephalus fuscovarius (BMNH). Remarks.     Mapping the structure and development of Science using co-citation analysis

    Co-citation analysis is a unique method used for studying the cognitive structure of science andassessing the research productivity. It is a research tool for examining the intellectual development and structure of the scientific discipline. This paper illustrates principles, techniques and applications of co-citation analysis. It also introduces the newly emerging co-citation analysis softwares,especially SciVal Spotlight and CiteSpace. Co-citation analysis is based on grouping together the papers that are frequently cited in pairs. Combined with single-link clustering and multidimensional scaling techniques, co-citation analysis can literally map the structure of specialized research areas as well as science as a whole
