Building Stories and the experimental poetic: a semiotic look upon the comics of Chris Ware

    No full text
This dissertation aims to analyze the poetics of the experimental comic, presents as main corpus the oeuvre Building Stories, by North American comic author Chris Ware. Building Stories consists of fourteen prints, of different shapes and sizes. A reading order is not suggested, allowing the readers to freely choose their own path (within its 87 billion possible combinations). The first part of this research makes a diachronic clipping that contextualizes Wares work, presenting the rupture movements of American comics, starting from the underground comix of the 1960s and 70s. Among the varieties of non-mainstream comics that came after the underground, alternative comics are highlighted, featuring names such as Art Spiegelman, Richard McGuire and Chris Ware. A consideration of the characteristics of alternative comics shows some of the singularities of the experimental graphic narrative and how Wares comics stand in relation to this form of production. It is also necessary to present Wares work, his course as a comics author and the characteristics of his creations, explored also in the stories analyzed in this dissertation. The second part of the research selects two of the fourteen prints in Building Stories, for further analysis. The selection aims to present Wares oeuvre, showing graphic narratives that feature some of its characteristics and their poetic qualities. The analysis makes use of (i) the Greimasian theory of text, following the generative course of meaning; (ii) the theory of semi-symbolic systems, based on the studies of Jean-Marie Floch and Antonio Vicente Pietroforte on the syncretic text of comics and (iii) the Zilberbergian theory, in regards to missivity and rhythm. Through the application of these theoretical models, it is sought to make a comprehensive analysis of Wares comics, showing the formal complexity of his narratives, in which the formal structure of the comic proposes an alternative form of reading. The third part, lastly, focuses on the structure of Building Stories, establishing a parallel between its multiple possible combinations and the Saussurian concept of syntagmatic relation. The subversion of the linear reading (featured in conventional graphic narratives) allows the reader to follow different paths in the comic, from different starting points: the identity of its characters is constructed with each chosen text

The River Lea 1571-1767: a river navigation prior to canalisation

    No full text
PhDIn pre-industrial England river navigations were subject to improvement by canalisation, the introduction of artificial navigation cuts and pound locks. Along the Lea this did not happen until 1767. Before that the navigation, except for one short period, relied upon a less efficient technology, the provision of flashes from fishing weirs, turnpikes and mills. Yet the river was still an important transport route, particularly for the supply of grain, meal and malt to London. It had been this during the mediaeval period, but not by the middle of the sixteenth century. Then in 1571 the City of London sponsored legislation to construct a canal from the Lea to London. Parliamentary opposition thwarted the original ambitious scheme, so two cheaper, shorter canals were considered, but never built. Instead an ambitious and unique river improvement scheme was successfully implemented. This experimental navigation (reducing reliance on flashes to a minimum) survived 20 years, before persistent and violent opposition from land carriers closed it. A Star Chamber case upheld the rights of the bargemen, but the experimental navigation was not restored. Instead the traditional flash-lock navigation re-appeared, and was to last, with only minor improvementg until 1767. In the intervening years the navigation continued to expand and prosper., This despite the admitted problems of relying on flashes and tides, and despite a series of major disputes with the New River Companyq the millers, fishermen and riparian land-owners. Conflict there certainly was, but also compromise. Ultimately all parties were prepared to accept the conflicting rights of other users, provided they could defend their own. commissions of Sewers provided an effective administrative forum to effect and authorise such compromise, even after the appointment of a body of Trustees in 1739. That the Lea was an adequate navigation before canalisation, despite a 'second-best' technology and an unpaid part-time administrative structure means' that a valid comparison with the concept of Appropiate Technology, discussed in modern-day development theory, is possible

'Operation Enduring Nightmare'? : a strategic critique of the military intervention in Afghanistan from October 2001-October 2008

    No full text
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references. In October 2011, the war in Afghanistan reached its ignominious ten year anniversary. As the conflict rolls on relentlessly, observers from across all disciplines, and indeed the general public themselves, have attempted to identify why the intervention, which began as Operation Enduring Freedom, has instead become an ‘Enduring Nightmare’. This dissertation attempts to provide empirical reasoning to this question by means of a literature review of the established strategic critiques of the intervention between the years of October 2001 and October 2008

European Union Foreign Direct Investment in China: Evidence from a Panel Study of EU Manufacturing Firms, 1998-2007

    No full text
The paper examines determinants of the EU‘s FDI into the China by using a newly available Manufacturing firm-level data set for the period 1998-2007 from the State Statistical Bureau of China. The theoretical framework of the paper builds on Dunning's ownership–location–internalization (OLI) paradigm, incorporating the institutional determinants to test international production by EU firms in emerging market. The paper analyses recent trends and patterns of EU FDI and its firms‘ characteristics in China. This study applies both static and dynamic panel data approaches (fixed effects and GMM system estimators) to test the presence of agglomeration effect of past FDI. It finds that EU FDI in China is positively associated with export intensity and labour cost. However, technology and profitability of the firm show unexpected results, not lining with theory in the study. The results further suggest that locational factors with regard to macroeconomic and legal environment are also considered by EU firms when deciding on FDI in China. The findings have important implications for practitioners and policymaking

The Gothic threshold of Sabine Baring-Gould : a study of the Gothic fiction of a Victorian squarson

    No full text
This thesis is a study of the Gothic fiction of Sabine Baring-Gould (1834- 1924), with particular attention given to Baring-Gould’s roles as squire and parson. I have chosen to analyze two of Baring-Gould’s Gothic works, the novel Mehalah (1880) and the novella Margery of Quether (1884), both which allow a particularly profitable examination of the influence of Baring-Gould’s roles on his fiction. In studying these texts I apply my theory of Gothic fiction as a particularly modern genre built upon a "Gothic threshold," a meeting point of extreme opposites which ambivalently contrasts and merges the categories of the modern and the medieval. In the first chapter I describe how Baring-Gould’s unique Hegelian-influenced Tractarian philosophy influenced his creation of the dialectical setting of Mehalah. I argue that because of this influence Mehalah should be recognized as a significant contribution to the literature of the Oxford Movement. In the second chapter I argue that Mehalah’s historical setting in the time of the French Revolution and the influence of Wuthering Heights reinforce Mehalah’s use of the “Gothic threshold” structure and contribute to its theme of ambivalent progress. In the third chapter I discuss the influence of Baring-Gould’s sermon-writing on Mehalah and consider connections between Baring-Gould’s role as parson and the novel’s botched marriage theme. In the final chapter I discuss Margery of Quether as an innovation in the Gothic and vampire tradition as perhaps the only Gothic work that directly dramatizes the Land Law debate and presents that debate as a "Gothic" contest. I argue that Margery channels Baring-Gould’s tensions as a landowner. In the conclusion I argue that Mehalah and Margery display Baring-Gould’s technique of constructing miniature Gothic battles that relate to larger confrontations, and that the ultimate terror presented in these works is the conclusion of the battle between ancient and modern forces
