Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Characteristics and predictors of Long Covid in children: a 3-year prospective cohort study
Background: Children can develop Long Covid, however long term outcomes and their predictors are poorly described in these patients. The primary aim is to describe characteristics and predictors of Long Covid in children assessed in-clinics up to 36 months post-SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as investigate the role of vaccines in preventing Long Covid, risk of reinfections and development of autoimmune diseases. Methods: Children aged 0–18 years old with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were invited for a prospective follow-up assessment at a peadiatric post-covid clinic in Rome, Italy, at serial intervals (3-, 6-, 12-, 18-, 24- and 36-months post-infection onset, between 01/02/2020 and 28/02/2024). Long Covid was defined as persistence of otherwise unexplained symptoms for at least three months after initial infection. Findings: 1319 patients were initially included, 1296 reached the 3 months follow-up or more. Of the patients who underwent multiple follow-ups, 23.2% (301), 169 (13.2%), 89 (7.9%), 67 (6.1%), 47 (7.1%) were diagnosed with Long Covid at 3-6-12-18-24 months, respectively For the primary outcome of Long Covid at three months, age >12 years (P < 0.001, OR 11.33, 95% CI 4.2; 15.15), comorbidities (P = 0.008, OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.06; 2.44), being infected with original variants (P < 0.001, OR 4.77, 95% CI 2.46; 14.47), female sex (P < 0.001, OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.02; 1.89) were statistically significant risk factors. Age >12 years (P = 0.002, OR 9.37, 95% CI 1.58; 8.64), and infection with original (P = 0.012, OR 3.52, 95% CI 1.32; 8.64) and alfa (P < 0.001, OR 4.09, 95% CI 2.01; 8.3) SARS-CoV-2 variants remained statistically significant risk factors for Long Covid duration for at least 18 months. Vaccination was associated with a lower risk of long covid at 3, 6 and 12 months for older children and a lower risk of reinfections. Being infected with the original SARS-CoV-2 variant was associated with a higher risk of new-onset autoimmune diseases ((P = 0.035, 95% CI 1.12; 2.4). One patient was diagnosed with Long Covid after a re-infection. Interpretation: This is the longest follow-up study of children with SARS-CoV-2 infection, showing a significant and long-lasting burden of Long Covid in the pediatric population. Our findings highlight the urgent need of investing in pediatric Long Covid in order to find effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, as well can inform preventive strategies in case of future pandemics. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. New Drugs for the Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections with Limited Treatment Options: A Narrative Review
P. aeruginosa is still one of the most threatening pathogens responsible for serious hospital-acquired infections. It is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobial agents and additional acquired resistance further complicates the management of such infections. High rates of combined antimicrobial resistance persist in many countries, especially in the eastern and south-eastern parts of Europe. The aim of this narrative review is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the epidemiology, latest data, and clinical evidence on the current and new available drugs active against P. aeruginosa isolates with limited treatment options. The latest evidence and recommendations supporting the use of ceftolozane-tazobactam and ceftazidime-avibactam, characterized by targeted clinical activity against a significant proportion of P. aeruginosa strains with limited treatment options, are described based on a review of the latest microbiological and clinical studies. Cefiderocol, with excellent in vitro activity against P. aeruginosa isolates, good stability to all β-lactamases and against porin and efflux pumps mutations, is also examined. New carbapenem combinations are explored, reviewing the latest experimental and initial clinical evidence. One section is devoted to a review of new anti-pseudomonal antibiotics in the pipeline, such as cefepime-taniborbactam and cefepime-zidebactam. Finally, other “old” antimicrobials, mainly fosfomycin, that can be used as combination strategies, are described
Invasive Respiratory Fungal Infections in COVID-19 Critically Ill Patients
Patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) often develop respiratory fungal infections. The most frequent diseases are the COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA), COVID-19 associated pulmonary mucormycosis (CAPM) and the Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP), the latter mostly found in patients with both COVID-19 and underlying HIV infection. Furthermore, co-infections due to less common mold pathogens have been also described. Respiratory fungal infections in critically ill patients are promoted by multiple risk factors, including epithelial damage caused by COVID-19 infection, mechanical ventilation and immunosuppression, mainly induced by corticosteroids and immunomodulators. In COVID-19 patients, a correct discrimination between fungal colonization and infection is challenging, further hampered by sampling difficulties and by the low reliability of diagnostic approaches, frequently needing an integration of clinical, radiological and microbiological features. Several antifungal drugs are currently available, but the development of new molecules with reduced toxicity, less drug-interactions and potentially active on difficult to treat strains, is highly warranted. Finally, the role of prophylaxis in certain COVID-19 populations is still controversial and must be further investigated
