A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Assessing the relationship between cardiovascular and small airway disease and acute events in COPD: The ARCADIA study protocol
The initial alterations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) involve the small airways. Small airway disease (SAD) is related to lung hyperinflation and air trapping. Several lung function tests may detect the presence of SAD, namely forced mid-expiratory flows, residual volume (RV), RV/total lung capacity (TLC) ratio, functional residual capacity, airway resistances obtained with body-plethysmography and oscillometry, and the single-breath nitrogen washout test. Additionally, high-resolution computed tomography can detect SAD. In addition to SAD, COPD is related to cardiovascular disease (CVD) such as heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and ischemic heart disease. No studies have assessed the relationship between CVD, COPD, and SAD. Therefore, the main objective of the Assessing the Relationship between Cardiovascular and small Airway Disease and Acute events in COPD (ARCADIA) study is to assess the risk of CVD in COPD patients according to SAD in a real-life setting. The correlation between CVD, mortality, and acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) is also evaluated. ARCADIA is a 52-week prospective, multicentre, pilot, observational, cohort study conducted in ≥22 pulmonary centres in Italy and that enrols ≥500 COPD patients, regardless of disease severity (protocol registration: ISRCTN49392136). SAD is evaluated at baseline, after that CVD, mortality, and AECOPD are recorded at 6 and 12 months. Bayesian inference is used to quantify the risk and correlation of the investigated outcomes in COPD patients according to SAD. The ARCADIA study provides relevant findings in the daily clinical management of COPD patients

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
Plethysmographic measurement of intrinsic PEEP in stable COPD patients at rest
Background: In stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEPi) due to tidal expiratory flow-limitation (FL) is responsible for the increase in work of breathing and for adverse haemodynamic effects. PEEPi during spontaneous breathing can be only measured invasively with the esophageal balloon technique (ES).
Aims: To obtain a non-invasive estimation of PEEPi in stable COPD patients using a commercially available plethysmograph (PEEPipl) and to compare it with existing data on PEEPi obtained with ES (PEEPies) [Haluszka, J. et al. Am Rev Respir Dis 1990; 141:1194-97;Dal Vecchio, L. et al. Eur Respir J 1990; 3:74-80].
Methods: Stable mild to very severe COPD patients performed body-plethysmography before and after bronchodilation (BD) according to current guidelines. PEEPipl was calculated by converting into alveolar pressure the shift volume measured at the end of a spontaneous tidal expiration. FL was assessed with the negative expiratory pressure method.
Results: 62 COPD patients were enrolled (mean±SD 72±7 years; 40 males). At baseline patients with FL (N=35) exhibited a higher PEEPipl than those with no FL (0.8±0.4 vs 0.3±0.2 cmH2O, P<0.01). After BD PEEPipl decreased (P=0.01) similarly in both groups (-12% vs -15%). As previously documented for PEEPies, PEEPipl was correlated with FEV1 (R=-0.597), vital capacity (R=-0.541), inspiratory capacity (R=-0.521) and residual volume (R=0.489), all P<0.01. However, PEEPipl and changes post-BD were lower than previously reported for PEEPies (2.4±1.5 cmH2O and -60%).
Conclusions: Although further implementations are necessary, the non invasive assessment of PEEPi by means of plethismography appears achievable
Sex-related differences in treatment and outcome in patients with ACS
The AMIS (Acute Myocardial Infarction in Switzerland) Plus prospective cohort study compared treatment and in-hospital outcomes between men and women with acute coronary syndrome (N = 26,452) admitted to Swiss hospitals between 1997 and 2007. The study reached several important conclusions: women had different baseline characteristics than men at admission, were treated with different drug regimens, and were significantly less likely to undergo percutaneous coronary intervention. After adjusting for these differences, researchers found no significant difference in the rates of in-hospital mortality between men and women, except for women aged 51 to 60 years, who were more likely to die in-hospital
Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
Rhodium(III) in a cage of the 1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N′-triacetate chelate: X-ray structure, solution equilibria, computational study and biological behavior
Two new octahedral Rh(III) complexes that are potential chemotherapeutic agents have been synthesized from the 1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N’-triacetate ligand (1,3-pd3a): [Rh(1,3-pd3a)(H2O)]·2H2O (1) and Na[Rh(1,3-pd3a)Cl]·2H2O (2). Both complexes were characterized by IR, UV–Vis and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis. Only the structure of 2 was determined by a single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The asymmetric unit contains the negatively charged rhodium complex, a sodium ion and two water molecules. The positions of the carboxylate groups define the cis-polar geometry. DFT calculations on 1 and 2 have also been done to confirm experimental results. In order to determine the protonation constants of 1,3-H3pd3a, stability constants and the stoichiometry of the complexes in aqueous solution, pH-potentiometry and UV–Vis spectrophotometry were used. Docking of 1 to human serum albumin (HSA) gives the reasonable assumption that this complex can be easily transported to the target cells. The complexes, as well as the 1,3-pd3a and ed3a ligands, were tested against various cancer and one normal human cell lines. Complex 2 and both ligands display significant cytotoxicity against the HeLa cancer cell line, while 1 shows good antitumor activity against MCF-7. Flow cytometry analysis showed the apoptotic death of the cells with cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase (Na[Rh(1,3-pd3a)Cl]·2H2O) and G0/G1 phase (1,3-pd3a)
