The role of this microfinance gain more important during the recent financial crisis. The subprime mortgage occured in 2008 has affected many countries in the worlds. In Indonesia the effect can be seen from the stock market. Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) shows 2721.25 in January 2008 while it plunged to 1241.54 in October 2008. Companies which the operations is exposing themselves to the exchange rate were obviously got affected since the plunge of the stock market induce investors not to continue their investments in Indonesia. As a result ''fligh to quality" happened and this create fluctuation of the exchange rate. However, other sector such as microfinance does not seem to be affected

Islamic banks in Indonesia havebeen in existence for more than two decades. Substantial development has taken place in this largest Muslim country. Regulator, academicians, and practitioners have been providing significant support with the objective of improving the performance of the Islamic banking. Hence, it is timely to assess whether its performance differs than that of the conventional banks. This paper aims to describe and critically evaluate and compare the financial performance of Islamic banks to that of conventional banks. Data of Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Return on Asset (ROA), Operational Cost/ Operational Revenue (BOPO), Non-Performing Loan (NPL) /Non Performing Financing (NPF) and Loan Deposit Ratio (LDR)/ Financing Deposit Ratio (FDR) for Islamic and conventional banks are examined. The analysis of monthly data covers the period from January 2004 to July 2014 (127 observations). Paired sampled t-test was adopted to see whether there are significant differences in the financial ratios between both banks. This study found that CAR, ROA, BOPO and NPL of conventional banks are significantly higher than that of Islamic banks but not FDR. Based on the result of capital adequacy, the findings suggest that Islamic banks need to have more capital to face the involved risk as that of conventional banks. Conventional banks need to function them selves as financial intermediaries to support the real sector as that of Islamic banks

This paper assesses the impact of changing competition landscape and Islamic bank penetration on bank risk, profitability and capitalization. This study utilizes an unbalanced panel dataset consisting of 37 commercial banks over the period 1997 to 2015. The paper uses a panel VAR methodology to discern the interactions between bank competition and Islamic banking presence on one hand and bank performance on the other hand. We find evidence supportive of both competition ? stability and competition ? fragility views for conventional banks. The results suggest that bank competition improves conventional bank risk and, at the same time, lower profitability and capital holdings. As for Islamic banks, competition seems to robustly influence only bank profitability. Finally, we note that increasing Islamic bank penetration improves the risk profile of conventional banks and, as expected, reduces their market power. These results bear important implications on the design of competition policies in a dual banking system as well as on the development of the Islamic banking sector
