Caroline Rabinowitz and Eric Wolf Rabinowitz letter to the editor of the Seattle P-I regarding the Goodwill Games, June 18, 1986
The 1990 Goodwill Games was the second edition of the international multi-sport event created by Ted Turner, which was held between July 20 and August 5, 1990. Following an inaugural edition in Moscow, the second games took place in Seattle, United States, highlighting the competition's role in fostering good Soviet–U.S. relations. The games were opened at the University of Washington's Husky Stadium with a speech by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, as well as an address by Arnold Schwarzenegger and performances by the Moody Blues and Gorky Park.
The games' motto was "Uniting the World's Best", and a total of 2,312 athletes from 54 countries engaged in the 17-day program of 21 sports.The size of the sporting program meant that some events were held in other Washington cities, including Tacoma, Spokane, and the Tri-Cities area. A number of venues in the region were built or renovated for the Games: Federal Way gained an aquatics venue (King County Aquatic Center) through the games, while Seattle itself gained a new track for Husky Stadium and new flooring for the Edmundson Pavilion.The Seattle Space Needle had a large purpose-built gold medal hung around the structure during the Games
Grains of Sound: Visual and Sonic Textures in <i>Sand or Peter and the Wolf</i>
There is a tendency in animation studies to discuss sound in the language of images, stressing sound’s alignment with visual cues (as in mickey mousing and leitmotifs). But sounds do not only mimic images: they add textures and emotions that change what we see. This article explores grain (texture) and timbre (tone color produced by specific instruments and techniques) as qualities shared by visual and sonic material. To do so, the author closely reads Sand or Peter and the Wolf (1969), where Caroline Leaf’s haptic sand animation is matched by Michael Riesman’s electroacoustic score. Leaf painstakingly molds animals by scraping away individual sand grains, and Riesman sculpts sonic textures with tiny adjustments to knobs and touch-sensitive pads on the Buchla modular synthesizer. Their collective improvisation with sands and sounds reveals new ways to think about artists’ material practices and the friction and interplay between images and sounds. They encourage spectators to perceive the animals as not merely plasmatic, or Sergei Eisenstein’s notion of contour-bending character animation. Instead, Leaf and Riesman deploy what the author calls ‘granular modulation’, expressing sand and animals with sensuous materiality. In Leaf’s and Riesman’s improvisations, grainy textures are the seeds of understanding how sound and vision become symbiotic – and encounter friction – in animation. </jats:p
Patterns of Authorship: The Translation of Christa Wolf’s Kindheitsmuster
Christa Wolf is widely regarded as the most internationally successful writer to have emerged from the GDR. However, a definition of authorship as a discursively constructed function presumes shifts in authorial identity as texts cross discursive boundaries, rendering ‘international’ authorship a fragmented, unstable category. Emerging at the intersection of textual, individual and institutionalised realities, the author-function is vulnerable to reshaping by a new receiving discourse. Intervention by agents in the translation process, on the textual level and in the interpretive frames provided by the paratexts that mediate between text and discourse, results in an understanding of the author that may exist in tension with her other discursive identities. Wolf’s example shows that the translated author’s function is subject to shift as it becomes dependent for its circulation on the institutions of a target culture: the author’s East German identity and her relative absence from target-culture discourse leave her vulnerable to appropriation by a powerful receiving discourse such as English-speaking literary culture, and the author-function that emerges has strongly influenced her international profile. Amongst Wolf’s translated texts, the English translation of Kindheitsmuster (1976; A Model Childhood, 1980) demonstrates most clearly the discursive reformation of translated authorship
Genome-wide association study identifies a variant in HDAC9 associated with large vessel ischemic stroke
Genetic factors have been implicated in stroke risk, but few replicated associations have been reported. We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for ischemic stroke and its subtypes in 3,548 affected individuals and 5,972 controls, all of European ancestry. Replication of potential signals was performed in 5,859 affected individuals and 6,281 controls. We replicated previous associations for cardioembolic stroke near PITX2 and ZFHX3 and for large vessel stroke at a 9p21 locus. We identified a new association for large vessel stroke within HDAC9 (encoding histone deacetylase 9) on chromosome 7p21.1 (including further replication in an additional 735 affected individuals and 28,583 controls) (rs11984041; combined P = 1.87 × 10<sup>−11</sup>; odds ratio (OR) = 1.42, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.28–1.57). All four loci exhibited evidence for heterogeneity of effect across the stroke subtypes, with some and possibly all affecting risk for only one subtype. This suggests distinct genetic architectures for different stroke subtypes
The limits of feminism
What is it about feminism that invites so many different opinions on what 'counts' and what doesn't? People from vastly different cultural situations variously categorise feminist practices as extreme, radical, reactionary, unbalanced, co-opted, revolutionary, elite, exclusive, progressive, passe, and hysterical. The desire of both feminists and anti-feminists to control feminism emerges as the limiting of what feminism is, whom it is for, and where it is going. The urge to limit feminism seems, in some cases, to overtake the urge to spread the word and celebrate feminism's successes. And it is not just anti-feminists who attempt to limit feminism - even feminists spend an inordinate amount of time defining certain practices out of the feminist spectrum. In this thesis, I document and analyse the way we limit feminism - its participants, meaning, practices, language, history, and future. I explore the reasons why we need to contain feminism in this way, looking in particular at those who have an investment in keeping feminism comfortably small. I invite back into the realm of feminism a wide range of activities and theories we generally invalidate as feminism, including the words of several 'unofficial' feminists I interviewed for this project. In essence, this project goes towards the rethinking of the term 'feminism' by examining the widely differing and often contradictory definitions of 'what counts.
The effects of input modality, word difficulty and reading experience on word recognition accuracy
Language users encounter words in at least two different modalities. Arguably, the most frequent encounters are in spoken or written form. Previous research has shown that – compared to the spoken modality – written language features more difficult words. Thus, frequent reading might have effects on word recognition. In the present study, we investigated 1) whether input modality (spoken, written, or bimodal) has an effect on word recognition accuracy, 2) whether this modality effect interacts with word difficulty, 3) whether the interaction of word difficulty and reading experience impacts word recognition accuracy, and 4) whether this interaction is influenced by input modality. To do so, we re-analysed a dataset that was collected in the context of a vocabulary test development to assess in which modality test words should be presented. Participants had carried out a word recognition task, where non-words and words of varying difficulty were presented in auditory, visual and audio-visual modalities. In addition to this main experiment, participants had completed a receptive vocabulary and an author recognition test to measure their reading experience. Our re-analyses did not reveal evidence for an effect of input modality on word recognition accuracy, nor for interactions with word difficulty or language experience. Word difficulty interacted with reading experience in that frequent readers were more accurate in recognizing difficult words than individuals who read less frequently. Practical implications are discussed
A machine learning approach to Structural Health Monitoring with a view towards wind turbines
The work of this thesis is centred around Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and
is divided into three main parts.
The thesis starts by exploring di�erent architectures of auto-association. These are
evaluated in order to demonstrate the ability of nonlinear auto-association of neural
networks with one nonlinear hidden layer as it is of great interest in terms of reduced
computational complexity. It is shown that linear PCA lacks performance for novelty
detection. The novel key study which is revealed ampli�es that single hidden layer
auto-associators are not performing in a similar fashion to PCA.
The second part of this study concerns formulating pattern recognition algorithms for
SHM purposes which could be used in the wind energy sector as SHM regarding this
research �eld is still in an embryonic level compared to civil and aerospace engineering.
The purpose of this part is to investigate the e�ectiveness and performance of such
methods in structural damage detection. Experimental measurements such as high
frequency responses functions (FRFs) were extracted from a 9m WT blade throughout
a full-scale continuous fatigue test. A preliminary analysis of a model regression of
virtual SCADA data from an o�shore wind farm is also proposed using Gaussian
processes and neural network regression techniques.
The third part of this work introduces robust multivariate statistical methods into
SHM by inclusively revealing how the in
uence of environmental and operational
variation a�ects features that are sensitive to damage. The algorithms that are
described are the Minimum Covariance Determinant Estimator (MCD) and the Minimum Volume Enclosing Ellipsoid (MVEE). These robust outlier methods are
inclusive and in turn there is no need to pre-determine an undamaged condition
data set, o�ering an important advantage over other multivariate methodologies.
Two real life experimental applications to the Z24 bridge and to an aircraft wing
are analysed. Furthermore, with the usage of the robust measures, the data variable
correlation reveals linear or nonlinear connections

The Moderating Effect of Job Characteristics on Managers' Reactions to Career Plateau
This study analyzes the impact of career plateau and job characteristics on people's attitudes or behaviors, but it also extends the traditional field of research on career plateau by taking into account the influence of factors linked to job characteristics on the relationship between career plateau and work-related attitudes. Our results show that subjective career plateau, job enrichment potential, role ambiguity and participation in decision making are related to various individual attitudes and behaviors. The impact of career plateau on these variables varies according to job enrichment potential, participation in decision making and role ambiguity. Although these direct and moderating effects are only significant for some of the facets of job satisfaction and behavior, it appears that these job characteristics can contribute to limit the negative consequences associated with career plateau.
Cette recherche analyse l'impact du plateau de carrière et des caractéristiques de l'emploi sur les attitudes et les comportements,0501s aussi élargie les recherches traditionnelles sur le plateau de carrière en prenant en compte l'influence des facteurs liés aux caractéristiques des emplois sur la relation entre le plateau de carrière et les attitudes reliées au travail. Nos résultats montrent que le plateau subjectif , le potentiel d'enrichissement du travail, l'ambiguité de rôle et la participation à la prise de décisions sont reliés aux diverses attitudes et comportements. L'impact du plateau de carrière sur ces attitudes est modéré par le potentiel d'enrichissement de l'emploi, la participation à la prise de décision et l'ambiguité de rôle. Music made visible in time and space : concepts of simultaneity in tone-eurythmy choreography
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 105-113).Eurythmy is an art of movement that expresses music and speech. This dissertation explores eurythmy's musical field, called tone-eurythmy, in its multifaceted appearances, background and within its philosophical context. Tone-eurythmy, carried out by performers moving in space and time, makes music visible. It transforms music into a new movement-art form, that of audible-visible music, by expressing musical components as well as the artistic intentions within a composition and those held by the performing artists. The dissertation examines how musical concepts are seen by eurythmists to integrate ideas of wholeness and to understand music as both audible and inaudible. It draws on studies and findings from music psychology to show distinct effects of musical elements on the human being, and to indicate the similarities between those and the qualitative expressions of music through tone-eurythmy
