Cine-Traffic in the Air: the Geographies of Inflight Movies from a Selection of European Airlines
Airplanes have emerged as less and less peripheral spaces of cinematic fruition. Inflight entertainment, in-deed, is currently perceived as an amenity commonly provided onboard aircrafts. On these assumptions,theessayexamineson-the-flycinemaprimarilyintermsofindustrialpracticesandcommercialstrategies. Atheoretical overview will clarify some of the issues most recurrently associated to film consumption withinplanes, often described as enclosed topological environments featuring a composite social structure domi-nated by a sense of transience and in-betweenness. Inflight distribution has developed as a crucial stage forthe global circulation of hundreds of cinematic titles, as well as a highly-lucrative niche market. First andforemost, such a unique receptive frame implies questions of physical and cultural mobility. Consequently, the study is based on a multivariable data-oriented analysis, conducted on the onboard video-cataloguesof five European full-service carriers. The findings derived from comparative assessments indicate that in-flight cinema became a sign of the times of civil aviation mainly due to its disruptive role for differentiationamong companies. In detailing this, tensions between local and global stances have necessarily to be takeninto account. Given that the same aggregation of contents may be regarded as a process of branding, theexaltation of various geographies, both on a suvra-national and hyper-domestic level, is identified as themain factor driving the airlines within the filmic selectio
Ph.D. Thesis Abstract - In-Transit Televisions: Productive Patterns and Urban Imageries of Mobility
Since the early 2000s in Italy, the installation of video-systems within transportation hubs has increasingly affected urban mediascapes and the design of public architectures, posing new opportunities for infotainment and advertising industries. Through a mapping of the major national installations of “Go-TV,” this paper analyzes productive and professional mechanisms implied in the proliferation of such audiovisual interfaces, which often imply contextual communication and geolocalised marketing practices. Acting as a “last-mile medium”, in-transit TV works as a window on the travelling habits of thousands of travellers as well as en passant spectators, generating and reflecting particular experiences of mobility and immobility. Based on their location and viewing settings, the messages conveyed reconfigure notions of space, place, networks, and border regimes, negotiating distances and physical perceptions of speed. Yet due to their situatedness, those video outlets embody an idea of “squared mobility". This impacts on the scheduling of such out-of-home channels: the standard flow of news, commercial clips and editorial contents is interrupted by real-time updates, traffic bulletins and institutional messages, on a responsive and environment-sensitive basis. As the paper will outline, the case of televisual stations arranged for non-domestic settings demonstrates the degree of pervasiveness of the small screen in everyday life, not only in relation to mobile media practices, but entailed by its reconfiguration as an ambient interface

Micro/Meso-Structured Reactors for Chemical Synthesis: Applications in Materials Science and Medicinal Chemistry
The research afforded during the present PhD project deals with the application of microfluidic technology for designing new synthetic methods. Compounds with potential applications in medicinal chemistry and material science were considered, with a focus on process suitability for large scale productions.
In this optic, development and scaling up of a continuous flow process for safe handling of diazomethane to large scale was afforded. Such study was carried out during a period of three months spent at Corning European Technology Center (CETC) of Avon, France, and the results obtained were been recently published.
Flow approaches were developed towards the synthesis, in more efficient and safer way respect to batch-wise methods, of heterocyclic compounds to be used as oncological drugs. A library of molecular structures characterized by pyrimidinamine and 4-anilino-quinazoline scaffolds was prepared, using multi-step continuous processes. This work was carried out in collaboration with a local pharmaceutical company, Fabbrica Italiana Sintetici (FIS) Spa, in the frame of FSE program.
Employment of continuous reactors was also studied for the synthesis of functionalized molecular nanostructures. In particular, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and porphyrins derivatives were prepared, with a definite improvement over traditional synthetic methods in terms of efficiency. Compounds studied have potential useful applications as materials for photovoltaic, molecular electronics and sensoristics. Such work resulted in various publications and in an Italian patent request.
Much of the critic and journalistic production on Raffaella Carrà has been focusing on the most exceptional, “revolutionary” and spectacular aspects of such a figure, as well as on the festive dimension of her career and business. This contribution aims to draw attention to another portion of her TV experience - and public persona - characterised by a greater closeness to the audience, an everydayness leading to the construction and consolidation of an apparently “banal”, yet crucial, model of celebrity. The article addresses two case histories from the first part of the nineties: Raidue’s Raffaella venerdì, sabato e domenica (Raidue, 1990, then renamed Ricomincio da due and broadcasted until spring 1991) and the first season of Carràmba che sorpresa (Raiuno, 1995), which paved the way to the adoption of emotainment formats in Italy. In the first show, Carrà returns to the public service after the unsuccessful Fininvest experiment, with a daytime programme featuring a blend of journalism, games and music. In the second example, back in prime time, and in the midst of a decade of "triumphant generalism", Carrà seems to normalise the special festive appointment within the schedule. It is especially in Carràmba, indeed, that the tension between ordinary and exceptional, normality and singularity becomes evident, in a new televisual style. Thanks to original archival research, combined with an investigation of the productive and distributive vicissitudes and an analysis of a multitude of press sources, this article identifies the main traits at the basis of “another half of Carrà”, differently unique, yet equally meaningful
